The 50's retro-futuristic style was a design inspiration in earlier games, but it was applied specifically to the ruins of the old world which itself didn't really serve as anything more than the backdrop to events in the game. The old world was dead and gone, and people of the new world had more concerns just surviving and building their own communities/nations than sitting around circle jerking a nation that hasn't existed in over 100 years, even while they are living within it's decaying corpse. The people of Fallout originally held no more nostalgia for the "old world" than a rat feels nostalgia for the corpse who's bones it's gnawing on.
Bethesda, because they're shit at writing and planning, decided to play on the old world Americana angle because it was easy shock value and "feels" - a way to connect with the audience through superficial associations rather than compelling characters facing interesting moral dilemmas in a thought-experiment vision of the future where the stable world we're familiar with that shapes our moral frameworks has been upended and wiped clean. It's also why they put so much of an emphesis on familial stories (kid looking for dad, parent looking for kid) - because they are the lowest of low-hanging fruit when it comes to writing emotional stories… and they still manage to completely fuck it up.
Also, don't expect to ever have an actual decent story with any sort of impact or real evolution to the setting ever again. Even if Bethesda weren't staffed with even sub-par fanfic tier writers, it's a marketing brand now. Certain features of the game, like Super Mutants and the Brotherhood of Steel are iconic - so expect to see them in some form in every single game from here on out regardless of whether they make sense or not. The logical conclusion to the Brotherhood of Steel is exactly the ending you see depicted in New Vegas - a cloistered group of isolationists waiting in their bunker for death as those more adaptable societies push them further and further to the edge. Eventually, if they exist at all, they'd be a group of petty raiders no better than the vipers or khans holding onto a corrupted and truncated form of their axioms and harassing people for technology - not to preserve it and keep it out of people's hands - but to scavenge for parts to repair their twisted and barely functional power armor and energy weapons - just to keep them operational enough to survive the next raid.

Also, because most of these mods change with skse which has to be modified with each update, most of those mods won't work with older iterations cause bethesda is constantly "updating" the game with their dlc which steam autodownloads onto your system because bethesda is too inept to allow downloading from them and instead insist on you downloading by default and treating it like on disc dlc, i'm talking gigabyte level updates. It has PvP, it just has an extremely retarded system that punishes you heavily for PvP. If you attack someone, you do heavily reduced damage to them if they don't fight back. If they do fight back, then if your levels are close you do regular damage to each other; if there's a gap, you do scaled damage to each other to make it more fair. Whoever wins gets to loot the losers corpse for junk items (tin cans, steel, wood, empty bottles, etc) and nothing else. That's the only thing you lose for losing in PvP, or for dying in general. You also gain some unspecified rewards for winning PvP, so it probably gives rewards like a quest, but those aren't taken from the loser. If they don't fight back and you manage to kill them anyway with the reduced damage, you get nothing, a bounty is placed on your head, EVERYONE on the server gets a map marker pointing to you, they're all free to PvP you, and if they kill you they get all your junk like normal but also get double the regular PvP rewards and get to steal some of your caps.
Unrelated, but not only are you unable to loot shit (other than junk) off of a person's corpse, you're unable to steal stuff from a person's containers at their base, so you don't need to worry about your shit getting stolen when you're away. People can harvest your crops though, and that's apparently all they can steal from your base, but it counts as a crime so there's some sort of punishment for it. When you're offline, your whole base magically disappears until you come back, so people can't fuck with your shit when you're offline. It's like the game is made for fucking infants, even shit like minecraft is more hardcore and less hand-holding than this.
