There's a few series that still bother with making it an option, but there's overall more incentive not to. Not when they can sell multiple copies of the same game (which publishers obviously like), multiple systems to play it on (which platform owners like), and depending on the era, paid online (which whoever owns the servers likes). Whether or not the developer themselves wants to do couch co-op likely makes no difference when the publisher is controlling their funds. Granted, handhelds operated mostly like that before, aside from some exceptions with the DS that allowed for single cart wifi download multiplayer (like Lunar Knights) as opposed to needing 1-3 additional game cartridges. Still required multiple systems to play through, but at least both the handhelds and games were cheaper than the modern prevalence of everyone needing a separate machine AND a $60 (at launch) game, plus paid online pass.
