Actually, the reason why they're doing all this shit is because they're in a poor condition, and for a while after they're somehow lifted up out of their condition, they'll do it until their kids rebel against the behavior, seeing it no longer necessary.
One thing struck me, in the "Fake Pepper" section. "He said that fake peppers would not slaughter individuals."
From chinese syntax to english, it's "It doesn't harm anyone if I sell fake pepper."
This is a justification sentence. Justification comes from people who see an opportunity and have enough desperation to take it. It's the mentality of a drug seller. "I sell drugs, it makes people feel good, I get money, what's the issue?" But in this case he didn't know that fake pepper would harm people, he's not far gone in his thinking where he knows that it's harmful, he's selling mud pepper.
Likewise in the industrial salt section the perpetrators likely sell it from samples stolen from work.
Then after this gets to a certain point you have the "smart" ones who take the time to sell fake walnuts using cement.
Notice a pattern here? The small time ones come from industrial jobs and the poor. One dude was literally selling mud, and at least two others are using materials they could only really filch from work and one last case is the "Rat Meat", where resteraunts are taking rats and selling their meat on the street, but it's not likely because they want to cut costs. So that's "Cement Walnuts", "Industrial Salt" "Mud Pepper" and "Rat Meat". All poor using justifications to make money, sad cases.
The second case is much more common, they're company forgery cases. "Fake Wax Eggs", "Fake Rice", "Fake Green Peas", "Fake Sweet Potato Noodles" and "Fake Ginseng" and "Baby Formula" are because of cost cutting measures, really shitty ones at that, but why?
Not to give sympathy to companies, but they work in fucking China. No one has money so they scam for it, no one is paid anything but cents so they can't even pay a middleman, they usually have to work with what they have and usually it's not enough.
A city in the capital might not actually have access to the farming areas and in fact the farming areas compared to the city might actually be better off because they're close to food and water, the cities all have the hallmarks of being poor as shit, poorer THEN shit. In America it's the other way around.
China, as you might understand, is still heavily influenced by communism. They've been FORCED to go capitalist in some areas if not all of them, for the sake of survival.
China is not a flourishing country. For whatever reason, maybe for an obvious one, it's a country of survival. I can't judge the Chinese for their actions under this sort of duress and I refuse to demean them because of this, but I will not deal with them or trust them under any conditions either way.
Because when you get down to it, the Chinese are a broken people. And you'll get cut if you try to pick up the shards of the mirror that reflects their sorry human condition.
