This actually reminds me of an interesting episode of Rurouni Kenshin. A boy studying the blade was inspired by a duel he saw one stormy night where one man cut another down in the blink of an eye. The boy went on his own adventure, leaving his childhood love behind to pursue this ideal in swordsmanship. He traveled far and wide, besting many opponents and improving his skills, but was still unsatisfied with his speed since it never matched up to the memory of this legendary man. Eventually he did meet this living legend in a duel. The boy cut the man down instantly and with ease. He tried to reconcile this and realized that lightning flashed at the moment the men in his memory clashed. The legendary swordsman was entirely mediocre, but the strobing effect of the lightning made it look like he moved with god-like speed. However in chasing this seemingly unattainable ideal he became a real legend himself. At this point he decided to finally return home only to find his childhood love had died.
