I'd consider it a spin-off. Since all of those games don't follow the numbered order. That drug dealing in Chinatown Wars was so fucking good.
But then again, GTA 2 exists. And then R* decided to completely wipe the slate clean and remake/reboot the entire series with IV onward, so who fucking knows at this point.

Back in the day when PS2 also had DMC, God Hand, Musous, a bunch of one-off high budget action games like Bujingay, Chaos Legion or Gungrave, EVERYBODY though that Castlevania slashers were fucking terrible. They just didn't stand up to standards.
Nowadays after two whole generations of constant streaming liquid shit they indeed don't look so bad anymore.

I don't know what to think on Bad Company 2, I mean the destruction was neat and it can be fun at times but it amped the unlock bullshit from 2142 like needing to unlock defibrillators and ammo cans. To put things into perspective imagine if in Team Fortress 2 you had to unlock the sniper rifle or the medigun and you were stuck with the basic SMG/Needlegun until you killed enough people who have all that shit unlocked and then some. I never played any of the BF games after Bad Company 2 but I heard they went for a more Call of Duty centric "One man Army, teamwork optional" focus in later games.

Resident Evil would be the prime example of an ip that spawned so many things out of accident and technological limitations.
After Resident Evil 2, the story has no-where to go, so they set it in Feudal Japan, becoming Onimusha.
though the combat was glitchy at best, Onimusha was set into backburner, and Capcom made RE3 quickly using leftover assets from 2. The glitchy combat bacame the basis of combat of Devil May Cry and the castle in prototype RE4 became the setting of DMC.
Also, Capcom tried a free camera Resident Evil instead of fixed camera angles, and the project became Dino Crisis.
Not only that, Resident Evil constantly reuses ideas that were cut out from previous games.
And the most amazing thing of all, is that Resident Evil was born because Capcom wanted to remake Sweet Home.

Bad Company was a transparent attempt to copy Call of Duty down to the perks and the "cinematic" campaign experience. BC2 did have great destruction mechanics, though, but apparently it was too much for the consoles so they cut them out.

The console versions had destruction intact though, and Bad Company 1 introduced the destruction aspect and that still remains a console exclusive well over a decade later as well as the somewhat forgotten Battlefield 1943.
Anyways on topic and the subject of destruction the Red Faction series had this happen. The first two games were linear fps games were you can blow holes through just about any wall, then Red Faction Guerilla came out and went for a third person open world game where all the buildings can be brought down, then Volition decided to go back the linear style of the original games with Armageddon and was met with a collective "why?".

>Isn't it curious? What do you think?
They're often good, because it often means that a producer was inspired to do something creative with the IP. Normally, companies hate risking money on very creative projects, but the established brand recognition of the IP allows the producer to make something more abnormal than would be sensible under normal circumstances, while giving the company much more assurance of a return on their investment. Lesser variants include:
>Games that are creative pet projects that wouldn't be let out of the gate by corporate without first being given the skin of an existing IP for safety.
>The new idea didn't really fit the IP, which is when you get people saying "It was a good game, it just wasn't a good insertseries game."
>Corporate acts on its own and revives a dead IP just to profit on current market trends.
Which are generally less promising, but still have the potential to hit or miss to different degrees.
