Why hasn't anyone copied this formula and made a genuine first-person exploration game? Are we doomed to never get a worthy successor to Myst?

Soma was such a pile of shit, goddamn. It tries to be philosophical but the game is too stupid and badly written for that to work.

It really falls apart once you give it any scrutiny and realize everything is scripted to hell and back, the puzzles are easier and the game is basically broken.

The levels and puzzles were great but the monsters actively detracted from all of it.

>Why hasn't anyone copied this formula and made a genuine first-person exploration game?

The games are cheap and easy to make.

>>15484875

So did I. Then EVERY "survival horror" game copied it. It was not Frictional's intent, but Amnesia killed the "survival horror" genre the same way Halo killed the FPS genre. It's also one of the reasons I didn't have high hopes for P.T. back when it was announced. "First-person walk/running simulators" are easy to make. Just look at that freeware Slenderman meme game from a few years ago that delivered on the same thrills that Amnesia had to offer.

919b8e  No.15484908

>>15484875

i agree, but i agree with >>15484887 too. amnesia was a great and polished penumbra with an arguably worse setting with a couple of really neat moments (the water monster was super cool the first time you're in there) but building your entire game on the premise that you can just look away from the bad guys and you'll be fine is retarded. penumbra, whichever one took place in the arctic expedition, was fucking awesome because at least you had some piece of shit hammer to fight with, which at least made you feel like you had any agency whatsoever

If Soma had any actual gameplay it wouldn't have been bad at all, but as it is it would've benefited from being a movie instead.

The real selling point is the click-n-drag physics interaction. I remember when I first played Overture and was opening drawers and dragging boxes and shit around, it all felt really immersive.

The only game I can think of that comes close is pic related, it's a neato wizard puzzle game where you have to remember how to incant all your spells. First person, puzzles, immersive mechanics, great environments, and no fucking horror.

Anyone else find the voice acting in Penumbra extremely whiny and annoying?

db1634  No.15485319

I actually liked it, I don't think it tries to be 'philosophical' too much (it didn't come across as pretentious to me), but i didn't expect too much either.

e204b8  No.15485321

Penumbra was enjoyable until it got to the "horror" parts. The floppy dick zombies are even more retarded than amnesia's monster.

>SOMA

SOMA had a great setting, a really good story, the atmosphere (heh) was fucking wonderful. It was incredibly depressing and a really cool concept and the ending was just soul crushing, even if the main character was a bit of a retard.

As a game it sucked fucking dick though. There were no puzzles whatsoever, just stupid fetch quests. The monsters, even if they looked cool, were predictable and easy to avoid. It was far, far less a game and far more a walking simulator.

So even if SOMA has a great story, it was an absolute chore to play. Would have been better as a book.

The worst part is that all monster encounters except one are scripted to despawn the monster after about 30 seconds if it doesn't immediately spot you. Just sit in a dark corner for 20-30 seconds until the music dies down and you're completely in the clear. It kinda ruined the game realizing this.

8c3fdf  No.15486144

If I recall correctly Amnesia had much more freedom in what you could manipulate ingame, the early trailer showed you moving an entire desk in front of a door to block it.

Sadly they scrapped that and you are stuck with hiding.

Alien Isolation is a good example on how to handle a strong monster without leaving you totally helpless

But nevermind SOMA, the real shit game that uses this style of game is Observer, it was so bad that by the time the game actually bothered to spawn a real enemy I was so disconnected from what was going on I just quit the game, what a waste of voice talent.

a689ec  No.15489085

I wish Amnesia was just Pnumbra in a castle. The scripted enemies despawning really fucked the game.

>>15485304

It really sucks they have that shit in the game. Red was passable but whoever that voice in your head was. That shit was fucking bad. It really sucks, because Pnumbra had some amazing atmosphere, cool enemies and was pretty good all around.

>>15488675

I never really get scared by games, but classic Resident Evil really stressed me the fuck out. Exploring new areas with limited resources and not knowing what you'll run into really made the game tense.

>take away guns

listen here you little libshit

but seriously I think it's more terrifying to introduce a new enemy type that is simply too dangerous for the player to face head-on, instead of removing the player's only way to defend themselves. Whether it's because it's an extremely fast xenomorph that will fuck you up if it spots you, or if it's some sort of lumbering monstrosity that will just shrug off whatever you can hit it with. This creates a different feeling of dread, knowing that your current abilities are insufficient for survival. It's important to make the distinction between this feeling of dread and the feeling of hopelessness that you get when you lose your only means of survival. Both feelings induce panic, but it's a slightly different "flavor," if you will. Then the goal is simply to run away and survive until you can find some piece of gear that can deal with the new threat.

By scraping the "pacifist" part.

The "it's scarier when you don't have a gun" meme needs to die. Taking away your gun just means you create rules for when the monsters have to leave the player alone if they've successfully hidden themselves, creating a sense of plot armor. Giving you a gun doesn't mean you can't also encourage running and hiding through a very strict need to conserve ammo. Meanwhile having the gun means you know you are never truly safe no matter how well you run or hide as the possibility then exists that you may need to resort to using it.

Subnautica isn't advertised as a horror game (being a survival, exploration, crafting game taking place in an alien ocean), but managed to often be more scary than most horror games I've played purely through excellent sound and level design. It does a very good job with its oceanic setting, especially in the early game when everything is an unknown. Hell, even the later parts of the game can be intense when you're traveling through the deep areas in a claustrophobic submarine or mech.

It's too bad the devs turned out to be total fags when they fired the sound design guy for being critical towards trannies. I would recommend pirating this one if possible.

9ed579  No.15496703

>>15488354

Amnesia would ultimately become a walking simulator without the horror elements. The horror itself is heavily scripted most horror games are scripted so it's not that big a deal for me and on top of that Amnesia's monsters had a neat thing going where they had some animations characterized into them being from another dimension going for them on how they're completely out of their element but since you can't see them without hurting yourself the whole concept is wasted.

Most "aliens from another dimension" usually makes them unusually competent and alwayts malevolent so I liked that quality to those loveable derp faces getting scared since they've never experienced light.

57b648  No.15496750

>>15484922

It wouldn't benefit from being a movie either since the main (only) thing the story has going for it is the fact that you actually play as the previous characters which tricks you into thinking the memories are real. It should have just amped up the puzzles/horror gameplay so it could actually been challenging, made the protagonist shut up, and dropped the walking sim segments.

9951d4  No.15496791

>>15494920

Atmosphere only goes so far. When you learn nothing can actually threaten you it loses any effect it once had, which is the real problem in Subnautica.
