What are your favourite video game artists? This thread isn't for whether vidja is art or not, but let us instead appreciate the great work concept artists have created for the games we like or even love.

What are your favs?

Favourite artstyle?

What makes a character good in your opinion? is it mass appeal or rather being relatable or it's unique looks?

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Renge Murata Akira Toriyama and Kazuma Kaneko since their artstyle are like a breath of freash air in a world what has become samey.

Kinu Nishimura - famous for promo illustrations for plenty of Capcom titles, gone freelance now if I'm mistaken. Love her style, sharp and very detailed.

Makoto Tsuchibayashi - works include RE1, DMC1, Sengoku Basara 1-3, Shinobi and Nightshade (PS2) and Vanquish. He's good as a artist but downright excellent as a designer.

Jun Tsukasa - worked with Psikyo, a small developer that mostly did mahjong and shooters, very lewd stuff. Last I saw of his work, he was doing the occasional doujin pin-ups, very detailed guns and muscle girls.

Nona - worked for SNK for a while, KoF 2001-2002 and SvC. His style is noticeably grotesque but I think it was a lot of charm to it. Might be an acquired taste for some, especially for those that were accustomed to Shinkiro's much more tame style.

Bengus - recently fallen from grace because of his shoddy work in SF5 but he used to be of Capcom's best artists and that is saying something as this one of the things were Capcom excelled at. Like Nishimura, he's essentially a promo artist but as some designs like Onimusha Dawn of Dreams.

Daigo Ikeno - another Capcom vet, designer credits include DMC3 and SF4, art director of Dragon's Dogma and promo artist for a lot of titles, including 3rd Strike. I've always liked how heavy his figures look, like there's a skeleton and muscle underneath it all.

Edayan - and another Capcom vet, did promo art for the SFA series, design and promo art for Rival Schools and its sequels and other titles. His figures are very colorful and stylized.

Shigenori Soejima - from Atlus, their new art director, filling the very big shoes of Kazuma Kaneko. Mostly known for very leggy figures but his creature designs are great too.

Eisuke Ogura - SNK artist, used to do in-game artwork and some illustrations for various titles but has recently took over as main illustrator since SNK's resurgence. Draws manly men with toned physiques and lovely ladies with soft lines and colors.

George Kamitani - can't talk vidya art without mentioning the head of Vanillaware. All of their titles are works of art to the finest detail as expected from a studio composed of a handful of artists. Kamitani's work is known for being excessively stylized or, as the enlightened geniuses that make up western gaming journalism, "something a 13 year old would draw".

Range Murata, Tsukasa Jun, Suemi Jun, Yoshinari You/Kou and Kojima Ayami are my favorite vidya artists. To me, they manage to capture the essence of human anatomy and make it so that it looks amazing rather than like shit, but they each do it in their own unique ways that leave me stunned. I mean, I know it's just concept art for video games, but it feels like some thing that belongs in an art house. You can almost feel the story going on within the picture.

Since music is art too: I really like the music that Torbjorn Brandrud makes, he was one of the composers of the music of AM2R too. Written the music in the PDF, and when I was practicing it on the piano, I got stuck on a certain part. Messaged the dude, got a delightful response back on how to play the part I was having trouble with. Nowadays, he makes and transcribes a lot of vidya and anime music.

The others have a lot of artists for the design credits but D&D's solely Nishimura's.

>>15486457

Kojima's pretty good but I gotta admit I'm partial to Masaki Hirooka, the artist who worked on Order of Ecclesia, it's a similar style but not as fujoshi-ish.

Also noticed I didn't exactly answered OP's question because I honestly don't know how to. Either I like it or I don't, I don't think there's much consistency to all the artists I like even if they're almost all Japanese because the styles vary wildly but creativity is the key point.

On that note, a few more…

Shigatake - Vanillaware artist, style is distinctly cutesy and colorful, so dudes and monsters aren't his forte.

The 15-20 people team who worked on the Souls games and Bloodborne - not very good at drawing faces but armor sets and jewelry are always meticulously detailed and very well designed, like Tsuchibayashi's work, you can perceive every part of a design despite the detail never coming off as excessive.

Akira - kinda cheating since this hardly qualifies as a game but from artists working on Kantai Collection, Akira's easily my favorite since he designs the Abyssal Fleet, hands down the best thing in the franchise. I'm a sucker for predominantly b&w designs and fat anime tiddies which he provides in spades.

Takuji Kawano - mostly famous for SC2-6. Fantastic artist proficient at drawing all kinds of characters but, assuming he's the one heading, his work as a designer as been getting progressively worse.

Raita - porn artist gone mainstream, Raita is basically Soejima + Kamitani. Wish he had more prominence besides Valkyria Chronicles and FGO, seems the perfect match for a Vanillaware game or for a fighting game done in the style of GGXrd.

3d2470  No.15487194

Nice art OP. I don't really follow artists, musicians or writers. Just the final products of their work. I'm sure most other anons are the same. The few that I do, I know because of something negative like a controversy. Identities are not as important as the works themselves.

Toru Nakayama is my favorite vidya artist, which is saying a lot, for I normally don't care too much for the art (let alone the artists) in games unless it has a certain style that catches my eyes. However, with Nakayama's art-style, it is a style which I can only dream of coming close to emulating. It is the perfect blend of cute and cool and the amount of detail he adds to his drawings is honestly incredible. If it wasn't for Nakayama, I wouldn't have loved the Megaman Zero series as much as I do right now. He truly was the coolest dude.

Also, he is a huge fan of Kamen Rider, which already is another massive plus in my book!

>>15487973

You mean Blade Strangers? I think her only involvement is because it has 2 or 3 characters from Code of Princess, that beat 'em she worked on. Dunno if that game is any good though but impressions in the FG thread didn't see favorable but then again we complain about everything there.

Anyway, gonna take the opportunity to drop a couple of links for the collectors out there. At least the first two were good for some things but only the first is exclusively VG-related.

I really like Ooba's style, and the hatched shading he adopted looks really comfy, and for the most part his take on prior characters either left them fairly intact, or the redone versions still work out great (Boomerang, for example; bonus points that his original design still shows up as well). It's a shame he doesn't seem to get much work anymore, in series or out. His replacement, Sasaki, is good as well. I can't say I'm that big a fan of his own personal interests as a doujin artist (not so much the fact he is one, but more what he's into), but he's got a nice sense of style and can still design some nice looking designs, even for the girls, despite spending over a decade repeatedly making gay as fuck shit about SoA's Vyse. At least he seems to leave his fetish out of professional work for the most part.

>>15488741

Note that Sasaki only joined with 5 and XF. 3, ACF, and 4 were by Ooba, and I'm still having some trouble tracking down who worked on 1 and 2, assuming they were even the same guy.

Also like HACCAN’s work, probably most known prior for Mushihime-sama designs, though he’s also been contracted for the likes of Avalon Code (which is what I’ve known his work from first) and most recently, apparently Fire Emblem Heroes. Unfortunately he’s also got his name on those poor quality 3D Seiken Densetsu remakes Square's been putting out lately, though it’s not as if his take on the character designs has been the problem there.

One more of note: Watching RahXephon recently, apparently the conceptual artist Bones used for that back in the day also dabbled a little in vidya design prior, particularly Mystic Ark for the SFC (which the last image was art for). There’s a high res scan set of his artbook for that game floating around (as well as another for RahXephon) as of last year, so if that’s of interest, it might be worth looking for.

>>15486483

Credits for the game have a number of different people listed as "Art and Graphics." However, two of them seem to be kept distinctly away from the others: Toshio Inoue and Atsushi Takai, both of whom are listed above and before the others. I'd wager it was probably one of them. You might try to see what else each has done art and graphics for, and if there's one that one worked on but the other didn't, see if it looks remotely similar to the style in those Brandish images.

Also, forgot to mention in the previous post, but if you like Ooba's work, I can upload his Chronicle: F artbook to the vola or something. Just saying since the guys that did the original scans (DesertMoon; quality is unfortunately kind of mid-res, and they never did get around to reuploading at a higher size) took down their website, so I feel it kind of falls on those who saved the whole thing to keep it circulating.

>I just wish it was easier to find older artbooks.

Same. Not sure how accurate it would be at this point in time as the series went on, but the classic era Wild Arms (1, 2, and Twilight Venom) had an art/lorebook, pic related, but there's no scans to found of it beyond a few pages/partial pages here and there, photos of bits being more common, and it never came out here. I've seen a few copies floating around on Yahoo JP auctions, but much a fan of that series as I am, I don't want to drop that kind of money when I don't even have a scanner for it to begin with.

And while I am on the topic, if there's something that pisses me off even more, it's scanners who have a book, don't do proper unbound flatscans, and then crop it down to just the character/image in question alone, because apparently who the flying fuck cares about having the artist notes, let alone having the book as entire pages. Glad the scan-anon in the share threads goes for full size, high res stuff in comparison to some of the fuckers I've seen elsewhere.

That is very irritating. Speaking of which, it's nice when some artbooks have their artist's notes in english like the Battle Angel Alita artbook or the Growlanser artbook. I'm on Yahoo Auction seeing if I can find the old Umihara Kawase artbooks.

>Glad the scan-anon in the share threads goes for full size, high res stuff in comparison to some of the fuckers I've seen elsewhere.

The thanks is appreciated. Seeing all the good artbooks on Sad Panda got me into scanning. I'm glad I can store this stuff online so others can enjoy it as well. It takes a lot of time and scrutiny to properly scan these things. And even then, months later, I can go back and notice mistakes I've made.

Should also mention Tarou Yamazaki made some rather comfy location art for ACF. Was fun stumbling onto his now-dead site some years ago whilst helping another anon look for something I'd figured to be unrelated. I'd thought the latest "game" he'd been contracted on for a while was some Monster Hunter TCG or something, but it looks like he got picked up for 2D art for Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenoblade 2, and production art for Breath of the Wild, none of which I remember seeing mention of on his site while it was alive. Still though, I think the only games he's been the (a?) main artist on have been Dragon Valor and The Eye of Judgment.

Pics being from some samples he once hosted on his ACF page. Most of the ones there having been parts of the castle and Elw related dwellings, so I'm left to guess those were amongst his favorite places to work on, or something. There's a lot more in the artbook for the game, and for some reason he seems to like tossing Jet (who isn't even from that game, hilariously) in as a scale for size at times.

>>15490133

His scan sets make it various hosting sites beyond just sadpanda, and I assume they're all still there.

>>15490079

>That is very irritating.

Worst thing is that for most people, I'd assume that still suffices. And most other sites claiming to host such themselves are more apt to just be reuploads of the original shoddy version.

Anyhow, considering you've done scans of one of Tsunako's Nep books, do you know if there's anything like that for Fairy Fencer as well, as they share both artist and company? I know that NISA had one for the CE of the original PS3 version out here, but I'm assuming it's probably either mangled in the notes, or skimped on compared to what Japan might have seen (especially if they might have gotten a second, extended one natively due to the expanded rerelease). On the other hand though, I'd wager demand for scans of such would be pretty low compared to Nep, especially considering the cast of it is more balanced than being 99% girls.

Yoji Shinkawa, Ayami Kojima, and Kozaki Yusuke would be a few I can name as being my favorites since I horde their art books whenever I can find them up for download.

Yoji Shinkawa is my personal favorite artist since his work has this rough look to it and the calligraphy like lines convey dynamic gestural poses. His art also appeals to the mecha autist within me with his ability to make more conventional mechs like Rex and more semi organic looking ones like Ray, Gekko, and Jehuty. His designs in MGS2 and 4 are some my all time favorites in terms of character and mechanical design.

Ayami Kojima's works are just beautifully rendered that I can enjoy her fujoshit designs. I really dig her stylized realism and the way she renders eyes. She can also design some hot women like Alucard's mom in SOTN.

Kozaki Yusuke, I just find his style appealing. His best work in my opinion would be his character designs for No More Heroes due to all the memorable bosses he had designed, Alice being my favorite of the bunch. He also did a very cute redesign of Nagase from Ace Combat. Shame he suffers from same face syndrome which is really evident in his contributions to Fire Emblem.

Yeah, I get it too. And for works where the art isn't near the spine crease, I guess it's alright; When it's too close, or spread over multiple pages though, not flat scanning distorts the inner parts, which for a viewer is annoying. To be fair, I'd wager most weren't meant to be viewed outside of book format, but at the same time, it's a sacrifice on the buyer's to make the work more readily accessible at proper visuals.

Actually decided to dig through the credits for both of the PS1 games. First one is clear enough due to organization and not having a huge amount of people, apparently:

>Character Graphics: Keiko Matsushita

>Animation Creator: Madhouse

Second game, not so much, as it has stuff kind of scattered around and in some cases doesn't mention specifics of which person/team did what in particular.

>Illustrations Designer: Masayuki Kaneko

>Character Graphics Designers: Akihisa Watanabe / Yu Hiki

>Original Character Designers: Nitaro Fuiji / Akihisa Watanabe (Yu Hiki and Hiroki Ishii listed separately; might be NPC designers, I don't know)

>Animation: Production IG / IG Niigata / Takuranke Studios / A.P.P.P. / Jungle Gym

>Animation: OH! Productions / AIC

>Animation Production: Production IG Co., LTD.

And yes has multiple categories of staff from each studio, and then lists Animation again. I suppose IG though had overall control though. So no mention of Sunrise for either, unless it was former staff that moved elsewhere. That's also assuming the they translated the staff names for the credit properly at that.

Should also say that the factor that most official art for WA1 and 2, at least what tends to be readily locatable from the time, tends to be extremely low res, and while I appreciate XSEED giving us an 80 page mini artbook with WA5, it's still a small artbook (the width and length of a PS2 case) as opposed to a big indepth one. Nor does it contain all the official art (pic related for instance is absent, though I'm glad someone out there deemed that page worthwhile, especially at such res). More reason why it's a shame Fargaia Chronicles hasn't been scanned.

Related note, but does anyone else feel dirty about saving good official art being used for fucking trash? Like, it's nice that there's new official art for the protagonists of the series, but I fucking hate that it's stemming from it being sent to mobile hell. And it's Gachashit at that because of fucking course it is, if what I'm reading is accurate.

Resonance is one of the action RPG entries in the series, not a tactical RPG if that's the line of what you're thinking. I'm just saying. I think I know what part the other anon is talking about. Towards the end of the game Lestin and Agnum act as a distraction so your main party can sneak into Georg's stronghold. Those two have to fight a few waves of imperial troops until you switch back.

Having underleveled/unused characters is understandable because the game doesn't expect you to use specific party members except for this one particular moment, and it never does so again, either.

I ended up grinding to get past that section. It isn't game breaking but I would consider it to be a bit of a dick move on the behalf of the devs. The game is already fairly flawed (the art is one of the few redeeming qualities, everything else about the game is very "generic") so I can understand how that may be the straw that breaks the camel's back for some.

Virgin Killer Sweater was pretty bad, to be fair. That seemed to have died out quick from my point of view because it seemed too tryhard in trying to ride the coattails of another meme. Better comparison would be the Open-Chest Sweater meme, which while died down will never truly completely disappear.

I forget which game the Grow Apple, at least that look for them, started in, so I'm thinking ACF, but I know the artbook for that game does not include a bestiary section. Either way, I'd say it's Ooba, since he worked on that era of the series.

Looking into the credits, they note these guys for monster design for the time, so one or more of them, I'm guessing: Tetsuya Ōkubo, Takayuki Yabubayashi, Hiroki Ishii, Yutaka Kunimoto, Yuu Hiki, and Yasuhiro Shibuya. Most of those seem to be/have been mainstays with Media.Vision for the duration of the series, if not beyond; Ōkubo in particular, whether acting as art/visual director, monster designer, or even producer in some cases.

According to Mobygames, concept art (note that this is apparently a different category than "environmental art", if you also mean that) is credited to Steve Chon, Alex Chu, Isaac Hannaford. Site's pretty decent for looking for stuff within a game's credits, assuming they have them for a given game, without risking much in the way of spoilers an actual credits clip might.

I've seen artists that make amazing faces (like Yoshinari You or Kojima Ayami) or at least competent faces (like Range Murata and Tsukasa Jun) and I've seen artists that are absolute shit at making faces (although none of them are in this thread thank god). Kind of a shame that the Shadow Hearts artbooks never focus on much conceptual monster art, beyond Soul Fusions (which even then they don't seem to give much focus). Because that series has great enemy design. This is assuming though that the scans of each I've come across are even complete to begin with though, given my experiences with finding incomplete crops for other series that seem to toss anything that isn't directly character art or a large scale concept piece.

The concept art of her makes her look much younger and more innocent for a slutty witch, almost as if she is a teenager, but her ingame model makes her look mid/late twenties.

I mean, it can't be an orgy because his pants are still on and the clothed demons still have clothes on.

His art style being anime-ish is another issue but I agree it stole the focus to the waifu stuff. That said, I'm curious about their next project which is meant to be a fantasy setting and see what Soejima can pull off given all his designs so far have been for modern settings.
