Lately, probably as October approaches, i've seen a bunch of anons talking about shit like Nechronica. A game where all players are some form of japanese style 'undead' be it mutant, mechanical, doll based or what have you who wake up long after the apocalypse where the world is an 'ash grey' waste.

It made me think about what games use this. We have plenty of straight post apocalypse games but they are usually games set when the world has been dealt a blow that changed the status quo but over time it will heal. Its not often you get 'nope, shits fucked m8' settings and i tried to think of the ones i remember, for example:

>Nier Gestalt: years after humans went extinct and plenty of nukes the world is slowly turning into a desert and animals are becoming scarce. The player character is a clone of a human trying to save his daughter who is also a clone. Doing so leads to the end of the clone experiments and life begins the slow march to extinction. By the sequel most marine life is dead and the domitant life is basically large, solitary herbivores with only trees really still chugging along as everything else is nearing extinction.

>Submerged: The world flooded and what little life is left clings around the top of rotting skyscrapers, sometime after a strange fungus came up from below sea level, from a lab or naturally is unknown, but its taking over every form of life and cannot be stopped.

>Xenoblade: The world is an endless sea and society exists like moss growing on the back of a colossal continent sized giant called a Titan. But the titan is going to die and take life with it. In the end they start a new universe where the only thing that crosses over is a floating laboratory that becomes a world tree but everything else is destroyed.

>Journey: You are a ghost making its journey to the afterlife, walking through the dusty ruins of a world where your people grew too vast and divided over a war for resources but the sentient war machines targeted a species, not a faction and so everyone was wiped out. You take a brief journey through these ruins and move on but the world itself is a dead and lifeless desert.

>Wild Arms 3: In an alternate earth during its 1800's wild west era the world of Filgaia is dying. The oceans are all sand, the land is rolling plains of sickly yellow grass and like the dark towers midworld fire doesnt burn as hot, the days are never a set number of hours and nights are longer and longer. You discover an 'yggdrassil project' to restart life but the ending leaves it ambiguous if its permanent or a stop gap

What games can you think of where its a 'its not quite the end of the world, but you can see it from here' setting where the hero's journey is not about saving the world but surviving a personal ordeal thats ultimately meaningless to the setting?

The game starts off by telling you that an alien invasion force has been so successful that there's only 12 people left on the planet, only one of which is a woman. On a mission to find said woman, you find out she died ages ago, and the few humans left are all killed right after finding this out. It could have been a decent game had it not been held back by the PSP's limited controls.

Armored Core: For Answer

The planet is in a decrepit and decaying state. Pollution from not only Human habitation, but from the hazardous waste given off by Kojima particles has caused the surface of the earth to become virtually unlivable. In desperate need of a solution, the remaining corporations from the Pax Economica build giant airborne habitats to house a majority of the populace - safeguarding them from the contaminated surface below. Some however, are forced to live on the surface.

From that, a group of Lynxes who are discontented with the current social standards form a resistance force known as ORCA, and amass a formidable arsenal to battle against the corporations. The Kojima particle radiation however, will eventually reach the Cradles wiping out the rest of humanity. Moving to space is not an option due to Assault Cells which are unmanned hovering weapon platforms created by corporations long ago to prevent any single corporation from gaining access to space. Thus, the path to space is blocked and the surface is unlivable.

Depending on your actions, 3 different ending can occur:

> ORCA path: Join ORCA in an effort to destroy the assault cells and open the path to space. The cost? The grand majority of the cradles would lose power and crash to the surface. Now the majority of humans that were on those cradles will die slowly due to radiation exposure.

>League path: Maintain the status quo and prevent ORCA from killing millions. Now whatever is left of humanity can live safely in the clouds, at least until the radiation reaches the Cradles wiping them all out.

>Destruction path: Take the advice of a happy Russian guy and kill everything. Destroy all of the Cradles and become the biggest monster mankind has ever seen, taking more lives than any other in history. The shortest path, but the hardest to finish.

You know the thing about kikes? They tend to play multiple sides.

The head of ORCA is actually a member of the League who started ORCA as a way to pave the way to space without having the blood of the innocents on the corporations/Leagues hands. The rest of the ORCA members were either in on it too or were played for fools and were going to be killed after ORCA accomplishes its mission. That's why near the end, the League stops fighting ORCA and simply lets them do their thing because they don't want to box themselves in for a slow death, but also don't want the blood of innocents directly on their hands. One of the top-ranked Lynx finds out about this kikery and personally asks you to help her stop this shit despite it meaning a slow death for humanity.

Interesting to note that Old King (happy Russian guy) was a member of ORCA but was either kicked out or voluntarily left due to differences on how to accomplish things. It's implied that he knew about the whole plan too, but rather than letting humanity die a slow death he would rather kill everyone now. Thus leading to the Destruction path where he asks you to join him.

There truly is no winning here.

I feel like Dark Souls gets a lot of credit for being the spooky scary undead game, but I don't think the Souls series ever really did much with the whole "cursed undead" thing, other than using it as an excuse to have some skellies around, have some jerky zombies, and handwave in an explanation for why all the enemies respawn whenever the player dies.

The part of the world where these games take place is clearly fucked and cursed and rotted, but there's not much to it. Being undead is more of a minor inconvenience than it seems to be in Nechronica. No body parts falling off. No people trying to hold onto their humanity and memories that make them stay human instead of becoming a horrible rotting monster. No risk of sacrifice or loss from staring too long into the abyss.. Of course, they use all these words to sell the theme of the game, but it's all kind of.. hollow.

On the subject of Soulsborne games: The Surge is a game where the world is absolutely fucked at the end, but you don't get to see it. They touch on some of the themes mentioned above, with one of the ideas being to turn humans into horrible nanomachine super beings who can survive the impending fuckening of the world, but your character is never forced to make hard choices, like lopping off an arm or injecting yourself with someone that will risk your humanity, but give you an edge over your enemies. They have confirmed a sequel, which seems to be focused on going outside the CREO facility, so maybe we'll get to see how badly the nanomachine satellite fucked the planet and what that entails.

You have to bare in mind Dark Souls isn't an original concept so to speak but the [DISTINCT ENOUGH FOR COPYRIGHT] Demon's Souls sequel. In the original IP it wasn't undeath causing hollowing as you couldn't truly die but a deep fog was spreading from a kingdom that invited demon's into the world and normal people didn't become undead, they just went insane. The threat of the world being covered by fog wasn't destruction but worldwide dementia/alzheimers. People could kill the demons. Not in equal combat but demons were totally killable and unlike undead dead means dead. But when people are literally going insane you have no armys and not even a culture left to defend.

Dark Souls takes this idea of 'dementia' and turns it into entropy instead and the idea presented in 3, much as overall i think its the weakest entry in the series, that the world/reality itself has been rekindled so many times its going hollow itself is a neat idea. But in a world where death has no meaning threats are all a bit bland. Even showing what happens if you become the lord of hollows shows its not true apocalypse but something new. In Demon's its the fear we all have of degenerative mental breakdown. Something you can't fight.

The plot of drakengard is the developers are edgelord chucklefucks and do it for shits & giggles/sales.

>'The Watchers (Angels in the original jap) they laugh'

>Literally go to the realm of the gods to kill god for being such a cunt and he lives in tokyo

Also both of those images are pretentious, retarded and shit. Drakengard OST had an original sound which was a pretty interesting take on stravinsky's music redone in an electronic style and the in-air gameplay was a decent enough, although simple, ace-combat knock-off but with dragons until you unlock the jet 'dragon' and its actually a straight up ace-combat knock-off. Ground segments were tedious in a lot of missions, but the combat was miles above GoW tier shit and frankly better than DMC2 (not that that means much, but still.) The story was also pretty kickass and about the only game which resembles berserk dark-fantasy styled stuff without actually being the berserk ps2 game. Taro's later games are so stylistically different I find it hard to believe he was even on the dev team for drakengard 1, even DoD2 does a better job of being drakengard than anything Taro ever made, which would've been fine had taro not made DoD3 and just stuck to the tangentally related Nier spin-offs.

>>15483237

>ORCA did nothing wrong.

ORCA was actually a ploy to gain power over the league by a particular group of individuals and they throw all the ravens/lynxes/robotdudes to the dogs the second their threats get taken seriously and the league opens negotiations.

>>15483350

>There truly is no winning here.

Fortunately when you're in the ORCA path yourself you're still able to personally destroy the cradles power supply systems and hopefully screw over the league now that otsdarva and just about every big arms fort is dead. The Legend of Dragoon.

In the beginning it seems like a fairly generic fantasy RPG, saving your small hometown girlfriend from an evil empire with your best friend, but by disc 3 or 4 you begin to discover that your real "enemy" is an absent god who created a tree of life. The tree of life periodically hatches new fruits containing new forms of life, with each fruit bearing an increasingly powerful and intelligent species. Mankind was 267 or some shit like that. After mankind was the Winglies, who were like humans but smarter and could fly. The absent god's rules basically mean that every new, improved form of life is destined to conquer all before it and become the new owners of the world, so to speak. But humans fought back against the natural order and had a great war with the Winglies and won a sort of pyrrhic victory, forcing the Winglies into hidden communes but also destroying most of the planet and pushing humanity back into a sort of Medieval level of technology. But the Winglies great commander, Melbu Frahma, has been working on basically destroying everything since he lost the great war and restarting the Tree of Life's machinations from scratch, more or less.

Something like that, anyway. It's been a while since I played this game but it was pretty good. The gameplay is fairly standard RPG stuff, but with a couple nice additions like the Addition system in combat, where every normal attack you do has a sort of QTE deal and the better you do at, the more damage you inflict. And you get stronger, more complex additions as you level. Also the Dragoon system, where certain characters can carry on the Legend of the Dragoons (humanity's frontline fighters against the Winglies in the Great War who were pretty much all killed in the battle).

Anyway though, the way the world is beyond repair is that even if you defeat Melbu Frahma and stop his plan, sooner or later the tree of life will hatch something even stronger than the Winglies, and it will be an even more difficult battle for humans, when they barely won against the Winglies anyway. Also if that god ever returns to the world, it probably won't be too happy about humans fucking things up. Another tidbit, before humans were dragons, who humans conquered. Then Winglies, who humans also conquered. So maybe there is a chance after all. Human supremacy, bitch.

>The part of the world where these games take place is clearly fucked and cursed and rotted, but there's not much to it

But faggot, that's like the number one reason to play dark souls muh gameplay fags can suck a dick. Even at the very start of the game when you meet the crestfallen warrior you KNOW the world is fucked, and as you go on and see how fucked everything is, what happened to the place, and particularly the people you meet your only feeling is "well, fuck". Hell, it's even better when you kill Gwynevere and meet Gwyndolin. Then you know everything is fucked beyond repair, there are no gods left and everything is going worse and worse.

Hell, anon, just little details like how all NPCs have those little laughs at the of their dialogue showing how hopeless they became and how they are kind of losing their minds.

>No people trying to hold onto their humanity and memories that make them stay human

>>15483400

>No risk of sacrifice or loss from staring too long into the abyss

>But when people are literally going insane

But that's wrong, anon. People in DaS go insane all the time for the process because they keep dying and dying, actually trying to do something, just to fail every time, the Crestfallen Warrior being major proof, even Solaris and that Cleric woman. Sure, death is not really a real threat a couple of times, but think how many times that people died before going insane and rotten. The whole world is hopeless before they have tried to do something, that's why people pilgrimage to Lordran in the first place, just to die many times and be broken and literally go crazy.

I'm not totally sure (it's been a longass time since I've seen them), but I think the basic idea in the movies is that the nukes dropped, and everything that hadn't been obliterated slowly dried up

that's why the first one starts off in a relatively peaceful area, but Max goes nuts when his wife and kid are brutally murdered in front of him and drives off into a shittier area (the Wasteland) to get revenge or somesuch

but in the game it's sort of implied that there was a plague that killed everything

not sure why the seas dried up though

I guess creeper world applies to this.

I remember playing it as a flash game ages ago but apparently it's getting made into a full 3d game for creeper world 4 with fluid dynamics and a bunch of unique units for the creeper. The dev blog of the new game popped up on youtube out of the blue and reminded me of it. The torrent for the full release of creeper world 3 exists and still has seeders too which was a nice surprise.

Setting is basically biological grey goo scenario where the enemy is a fluid and pours out of emitters. It has consumed worlds and no matter how hard it is pushed back or what new technology is developed to fight it, the creeper always comes back and eventually overcomes the new defenses. 3 is set after several galactic human empires have fallen to the creeper and now basically everything has been overrun.

I remember this from way back when. Funny to see how much progress we've made on some of these. The climate is getting fucked and feminism has destroyed the fabric of society. At this rate by the time the space invaders get here there'll be nobody left to kill. Maybe if they'd just come right out and listed feminism as an apocalypse scenario when they first made the site, we'd all be a hell of a lot better off.

>>15504408

Chrono Cross is kind of an interesting case of this because you could make the argument that humanity is screwed in some way or another on all timelines. There are at least 3 different timelines important to the story, and all of them feature some kind of super-being imposing its agenda. The Lavos timeline has Lavos awakening in 1999 and visiting supreme rekkage on the humans, the timeline where Lavos was defeated has FATE come into existence and probably pretty much become Skynet, and then there's the timeline the Dragon God was summoned from where humanity's predecessors were wiped out by the Reptites. CC's ending really doesn't give us any idea what the fuck (is happening/has happened/will happen, choose one or all of the above), so there may still be a way out for humanity, but due to the lack of a third game it's hard to say.

>>15504488

Humanity and Reploids have merged by the Legends era, so it's really not humanity dying out so much as being replaced by a successor species. The Legends era has the energy crisis to deal with though.

A lot of people think its a post nuke thing but its not. Mad Max is literally 'gas ran out and whats left was warred over and poisons in the atmosphere are ruining the world but the location in MM survived because its straya and was already a shithole. If you rewatch it the flashbacks are during the fuel crisis and max is a cop and theres still some greenery but as the series goes on cars are giving off dirtier fumes and the greenery becomes increasingly scarce.

Its actually an ecopocalypse story but it was part of a huge surge in post cold war 'nukepunk' stuff it got lumped in with a bunch of other stuff that is nuclear mutants and the like.

You forgo to mention:

>the internet was killed when it was at the height of its creativity (early 2000's)

>this in turn spurns apathetic citizens to worship Kun Lan's doctrine and become Heaven Smiles, causing terrorism for the sake of terrorism

>this is apparently an unforeseen consequence of the US, China and a Middle Eastern faction trying to colonize Japan to prevent a third world war from ever happening again (fun fact even in our universe Japan is the only fascist country that was condoned for their actions by the US for political reasons)

>some Japanese politicians create the Yakumo Cabinet Policy in the 50's, literally the Diplomacy skill from HoMM3, a magical piece of paper that contains basically the secrets to the ultimate forms of propaganda and used it to rebuild Japan from its ashes (possibly with the help of Kun Lan)

>the US wants in on it as does the entire world, which leads to more and more deaths

>the entire fucking mainland Japan is nuked and only shitholes like Battleship Island are ethnic Japanese dominions

>there's a migration crisis surrounding Japs moving in droves into America legally and illegally, with a good portion of little girls being used for organ harvesting

>you're just a government lapdog with no consequence to the story other than pushing someone else's agenda

>even when you regain your senses and become a Lion the only choice you're given is extremely sadistic, either partake in the genocide of the Japanese or destroy half the United States

>it doesn't matter either way cause China took over and your action were already foreseen by a CIAnigger who isn't even mentioned in the whole story and may or may not be the person who heavily altered history books to suit the US' needs

Also special mention to the fact that the only people you talk to are either ghosts, virtual avatars or delusions of the protagonist and everyone who is alive either dies before you or because of you and the only person who truly understood the power of the Yakumo's propaganda asks you to kill them to cure Heaven Smile before it becomes a fucking epidemic

It's not that. It's that in Buddhism, there are 108 sins that must be overcome individually. Those huge staircases out front of their temples have 108 steps, for example. They ring their massive bells 108 times on their New Year celebration. Spiritomb's local Dex number, height, weight, and stats are all 108. The 108 Beads item in FF often shelters you from spiritual status ailments.

Once you know the significance, you'll see it everywhere.

An older civilization abused Alchemy, the same power you use, so much that the world is just giving out and a badass magic grandpa has to travel around and prevent people from fucking it up further and accelerating the decay with alchemy. The end goal of the game isn't finding a solution to this, but just rescuing your sister from a lifeform made by the older civilization, that's trying to take samples of various kinds of life before the world bites it. Melbu Frahma also sold the winglies out, as even then he was working with the servants/children of the god of destruction; I believe some winglies even allied against him during the war, but again, I don't remember the details.

As far as any new forms of life? Not likely. The tree of life gets hit with the moon at the end. I do find it amusing that the area around the tree was so fucking barren.
