I think that's there problem, they have too many. Then you have to factor in game development getting bigger, requiring more staff, more time, more costs and so they just end up sticking to their main big sellers and anything that sells less gets pushed aside.
Then Miyamoto has "good day" and then randomly decides that it's time to revive X forgotten franchise for no reason apart from he just feels like it.
In a way Smash must be kind of annoying for Nintendo as just reminds fans how long some series have not gotten new games (like F-Zero).
