IGN uploaded the first half hour of the new Starfox-but-not-Starfox game a couple weeks ago, but I didn't see a thread about it so I'm making this one. Overall I think it'll be mediocre but I'm feeling ambivalent about what I saw.
The bad:
>human characters
>tonnes of human characters
>human ship's crew outnumber the starfox characters 2 to 1
>they're all painfully generic, including the tranny-looking muscle chick who is more buff than the dudes
>safe, airbrushed dreamworks art style
>crushingly bland dialogue
>that confusing mess of a HUD and those messes of menu screens
>cartoon starfox characters walking around with human characters (from a different star system/galaxy, but still)
>No Man's Sky robots
>game has a weird buttermilk filter over the lens when on the planet (maybe it's only desert planets?)
>fucking vision towers
>minimap pointers
>scanning wildlife
>handing in quests and doing all of the above for XP
>Falco still doesn't have a Brooklyn accent
The good:
>XP seems to be spendable points you get for doing cool things rather than a grind (although this being a Ubisoft game, I'm probably wrong)
>moving around on the planet looked bouncy and tactile
>boosting across deserted landscapes is made more interesting by being able to ramp off of scenery and chain together barrel rolls for small XP multipliers
>you can equip your ship with two weapons at a time, which can combine their shot effects in neat ways, and switching between them is easy and fast
>animations are really expressive and vibrant, and the Starfox team in particular looks good
I don't have a Switch and was never considering one, but I'm genuinely kind of stumped about this one. Every other minute my thoughts would fluctuate from cautious optimism to bafflement and frustration at obvious Ubisoft-isms; I heard jokes five years ago about them not being able to design games without vision towers and clusterfuck minimaps, but those jokes are now a reality. Even if the human crew had been smaller and trimmed the redundant characters (you could have all the important dynamics with 3 characters, maximum) I'd be more conciliatory.
