The challenge isn't entirely self-imposed though. KH fags didn't just make up level 1 runs. The developers put in a skill that stops exp gain. It's a challenge from the developers. That's like saying any mode of piss easy in a game with multiple difficulty modes is "a self imposed challenge" and "Your essentially gimping yourself" by not choosing the easiest mode as it's the most efficient way to complete the game. The only problem I have with KH level 1 runs is that there's no reward. You can earn everything in the game without doing it. I am going to point out two things.
1. Sora did that to release Kairi's heart from himself
2. Sora is going to do that again at least once to release Ventus (who is just as a vessel right now as Kairi was in first game)

I was born in 1997.
I found out about Kingdom Hearts through this commercial in 2004, when I was 7. I had just gotten my GBA for my 7th birthday. Begged mom for the game, and she got it for me.
I got all the way up to Riku IV right after the Destiny Islands, but for the life of me couldn't beat him. I distinctly remember using sleights like no tomorrow, (stupidly) wasting away my cards. I just kept dying to him, and got increasingly mad at the fight. Eventually, I died to him when he had a literal sliver of HP left, and got so mad that I sold the game back to Gamestop.
After getting my PS2 for my 9th birthday, I was already aware that KHII existed, but didn't know that there was an original KH. I thought that CoM was the very first KH, and II was its sequel.
I again begged mom for it, asking her to make sure to get "the one with the 2 on it", and lo - got it, and was immediately hooked.
I obsessively played and re-played II as a 9- and 10-year old. Playing on piss-easy difficulties of course, I thought it was the absolute coolest thing ever made. I eventually found out about KH2FM's existence, and obsessively watched Youtube videos of its extra content, longing to play it someday.
Found out about the original KH in late '08, picking it up and completing it alongside re:CoM. I got really excited about each subsequent release thereafter, getting them all on or about release day: Days, BBS, re:Coded, DDD, and the Remixes.
The only game I've yet to play is 2.8, which I hope to fix this holiday season when I plan on finally getting a PS4.

As far as i know disney worlds aren't connected to the rest of Kingdom Hearts lore since 2. Its in 1 where they tried to make villains into proper long term antagonists, and so far only maleficent remained as such.
