The 7th gen is long over, and it's still weird to think about how long it lasted. We got to see some unusual things like consoles lasting way longer than their due date, but in this we saw a lot of extremes and experimentation taken with these systems.
What are some of your favorite games still only available for these platforms?

Things just change. I mean the 8th gen still feels like it barely started at all, and somehow PS4 and Xbone manage to be both underpowered and hardly ever using their potential at the same time (all the great games from the past were made on much weaker hardware, imagine what you could do if you just expanded them but with modern consoles).

That's like one of my final great games from that gen until it all went to shit. RDR2 does look good on previews but I have a hunch they'll fuck it up just like with GTA V. Speaking of, GTA IV embodied the early 7th gen optimism for me, it sure lacked content but the level of detail and sophistication of the physics beats current games.

fortunately only really impacts fats, shame it's the BC fats but I'm personally not an emulation kinda guy. Getting a PS2 for back up loading and a slim PS3 will be cheaper and last longer than a single working fat.
I remember using my first PS3 from like 2007, non BC unfortunately, for playing back some dinky back to the future 700mb rip I downloaded and even over composite it blew the fuck outta what my PC was doing. Really good media center. Later on I tried streaming to it with PS3 media server but never got good results, very often it would stutter. If anyone knows how to set it up well, I'm interested in hearing.
Here's an absolutely legendary JRPG that not enough people care about. Anyone ever play Blue Dragon? I liked the way it looked and the boss music has this sort of corny quality to it that kinda makes me cringe, but I love it. Fortunately the theme alone lived on through Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden.

it was partial emulation and it's known to have issues with some games. I think software BC PS3's are still sorta hardware based but don't have the EE+GS, but just the EE on board. Would rather just use my PS2 really, I think if you haven't you should look into what PS2 back up loading is like. Even issues like klonoa 2's sound breaking have been addressed through OPL and it's been a pretty sweet ride.
The Darkness is also an excellent shooter that too many people haven't played because it's on PC. It's a damn shame, they got the awful sequel but not the excellent original.

Even with all it's issues, GTAIV is still a really good game. There is a lack of stuff to do but I sucked it up and did a bunch of friend hangouts anyway just to listen to their stories. I also never knew that you could just "Call" Roman and have a conversation with him about the story progression without hanging out.
I used to graphicsfag hard on the PC version and had it all jacked up with hundreds of mods and scripts and just dealt with it chugging at 24fps but now I've learned to appreciate vanilla, even turned the Definition mode off and learned to enjoy that slight blur across the skyline and all the extra visual effects. There's a Reborn patch with some performance and render fixes and it's packed with a rifle animation fix that removes the input lag/delay when you fire.
The writing was also way better than V in my opinion, it's like as soon as 2010 went by everyone that could write good satire got replaced by one-note snark factories.

V basically disappointed me on every level. The map is boring and it has neither the detail of IV nor the scope of SA, shooting physics are just unsatisfying, driving is boring and dumbed down, there's ultimately very little content, biggest personal disappointment that gen to me next to Saints Row 3. I just wanted them to reuse the basic gameplay of IV with some tweaks and more content and I got nothing.
The satire is also shit indeed with wannabe South Park bullshit. Also, because I care too much about cars in vidya I hated the car selection, more vehicles than ever but the variety sucks. There's more sports and luxury cars than ever, most of which are ugly and clearly designed by somebody else than in IV (IV had some of the most beautiful fictional cars ever), half of them are only available by purchasing them through website in vanilla game, hardly any "normal" cars (IV nailed that, V has ghetto hood rats driving mint condition 1960s muscle cars and 1950s Bel Airs in 2013).

If only ODST wasn't so rushed we could have gotten a proper game. It always bugged me that the Rookie played the same way as Chief, just with fixed health and Stamina instead of shields.
Oh, and the SMG. How depressing. It's the perfect weapon for an ODST to sneak and peek around the city at night but it does less damage than the Vanilla one and taking out a few Brutes with it will burn up a full load of ammo.

I won't deny its got its flaws, but those flaws seem minuscule in the accomplishments of the rest of the game. Focusing entirely on them will no doubt color your experience and likely result in you ignoring any good and only seeing the bad. The atmosphere, that sharp sense of loneliness and the little stories told throughout New Mombasa, as well as the ODST squad that fought through the streets as the last ditch effort, there's a heart of gold in there, but if you're only interested in the flaky outside, you're only gonna take that away.

The more people played, the game gathered stretching info of all the players and added the length to his girlfriend "Girl" who would stretch with the goal of making it to the moon. I think she wound up making it around the whole solar system.

One of the stupidest things Sony did with the PS4 was remove media features that were in the PS3 and even the fucking Vita. For example, streaming video from my PC can be done on a PS3 or Vita with a tiny bit of setup, but a PS4 can't. Also, PS4s don't seem to read home made discs, so my archived anime is unwatchable. The PS3 does that just fine. Hell, the PS4 couldn't even play shit from an external device for some time after its launch, if I remember right. About the only thing the PS4 does better than the PS3 or Vita in terms of media features is that it's nowhere near as picky about what files it plays, and it plays more file types, mkv being the most notable that works on PS4 but not PS3.

Not to mention being a 7th gen idort is less than $150 away. About a year ago pawn shops near me were selling 360s and PS3s of every gen and model for $49.99 with a "if it's a brick take it back and grab a new one from the pile" warranty. I think Wiis were $40 or less depending on condition.
Now that I think about it, they were also selling XBones for $150 back then, I wonder how much they are now. Might put a Bone and MCC on my list soon. Or is it worth it to get the Xbone X?

I just bought a PS3 for 20 bucks, it had YLOD on so I baked it to reflow the solde, finally worked, then bricked it trying to install CFW, I couldn't use safemode because I didn't have the original controller, and I realized that I would most likely get a YLOD again unless I completely recased the thing and re-applied thermal paste to the heat sink. I ended up just throwing it out, it was only 20 bucks so easy come easy go, probably could've fixed it but at that point it would've cost more to do that then what I payed for it. Emulation is getting better anyways. Its just a real fucking shame Sony had the processors upside-down inside the case. Who fucking designed it that way and used cheap solder joints? What was Sony thinking? Were they mentally retarded?

I've seen PS3s completely clean just YLOD. You have to understand that Sony chose a very cheap lead-free solder for the heat spreaders, this wouldn't be an issue except the chips are physically upside-down inside the case, so you get a heat spreader designed to get hot being applied with cheap solder and hanging upside-down, the solder will soften and the heat spreader will be pulled downwards off the chips from gravity. Its just really poor thermal design in general. Even the Xbox 360 had really bad thermal design with its red rings. Consoles of this generation were made in a really weird point in time when processors got more and more powerful and ran hotter than ever but good thermal design was still very poorly understood

Ah yes, ye olde days of "this chip runs hot as fuck already, ship it with a fan it'll be fine". Yes I've heard of heat issues out of the box and I've also seen OG 360s run just fine in 2018. It's odd. How labor-intensive is replacing that thermal paste in a fat PS3? I'll probably have to do it eventually.

For the heat sink its a slight inconvenience since the console is kind of a puzzle to disassemble but not too bad and after that you just remove the heat sink, reapply thermal paste, and screw back on, just like a PC.
The internal heat spreaders are a lot harder though since you will need to de-lid the chips and then reapply actual leaded solder to them which is easier said than done but it has been done before. Still wouldn't be comfortable with the chips hanging upside down since heat rises (seriously what the fuck was Sony high on when they did it this way?) but not much to do about that other than recase it.

Anyone out their played The Puppeteer? I've just started looking up game play and it seems like a genuinely good side scrolling platformer, lots of charm and actually good English voice acting. Oh and I think it has the voice of Ren from Ren & Stimpy in it. Looks gorgeous too. This is what I loved about the 7th gen, the systems were powerful and they could do really simple games that looked way beyond the traditional 3D games at the time.
>>15466518
requires a hefty amount of disassembly, it's a fairly packed system but if you're used to working with more modern electronics it's not too bad. Nothing stupid like sealing adhesives. Good opportunity for a truly thorough clean, too.
