I think it is awfully funny the amount of people projecting about what the game will allow when it releases. I figure the level of freedom will be quite a bit lower then expected: more freedom then previous CDPR RPGs, the witcher games, while giving far less then what you would expect from a tabletop RPG. Probably something close to FNV levels of quest freedom, while moving you along a storyline.

For the most part I agree with you, but GTA:O also had only like 5% of the map that was metropolitan city, another 15% that was basic city, and the other 80% was fucking boonies. Flying vehicles are fairly easy when you only have a handful of tall buildings. Night City looks like it's going to be mostly metropolitan city with cramped streets that make driving, even, ground vehicles feel slightly claustrophobic. I would imagine adding player controlled flying cars would be slightly more difficult. Don't forget GTA:O added it in DLC, CDPR have said they aren't ruling that out.

I recently did a playthrough of all the Max Payne games. I played 1 and 2 with the FPS mods and put up with it in 3 because I wanted to see the continuation of the story, but I gotta say TPS games fucking suck. I don't know if I'm just bad or what, but artificial difficulty from also having to aim around an extra obstacle (the player) is kinda stupid, especially when you have to manage which shoulder you're aiming over when slicing the pie. It's made even worse when AI enemies, obviously, don't have to deal with this problem. For instance on the night club roof with the huge lettering (on the 2nd or 3rd mission) I got dropped by a guy on the other side of the lettering that I literally could not see from either angle. Most people say that FPS games suck because of limitations of platforming, but there are other visual cues for depth than measuring the distance between three points like you get with your eyes naturally. I've never had an issue in Mirror's Edge, Brink, or Dying Light.

TL;DR: Every third person shooter would be better if it was a first person shooter.

If your environment is a shitty ghetto in California during the day the environments are gonna look the same across any game. Compare GTA V, Watch_Niggers 2, and Cyberpunk 2077, and as a bonus L.A. Noire. You could also compare areas based on cities in general like New York, or areas like that. Compare Saints Row (all of them), Mafia (all of them), GTA IV, Max Payne 3, Prototype, Spiderman, Infamous, The Godfather: The Game. I could go on and on about these comparisons, obviously you would also have to take into account graphical fidelity which to be honest hasn't improved much in the last few years which is why you get so many games looking like GTA V.

More to your point I would say that the atmosphere is in fact there. If you look at the second image you can see, on the left, where the inspiration was clearly coming from the images on the right. The Area with the neon and EL-tracks looks like the images of the cityscapes, the images of the car overlooking the skyline looks like the images from Ghost in the Shell on the left, the only image on the right that looks like it comes from GTA V is the top left image on the right, because, again, a ghetto in a city in California with graffiti on the walls is always gonna look relatively the same.

Max Payne 3 is a failure of design before anything, with its turret sections that actually remove the series signature projectile bullets and an otherwise awful story. Pointer controls are where the activity of moving a mouse cursor is replicated as the center of the camera's frustum, this is a very easy task and without additional concepts, mechanics and systems behind the controls, it becomes a very boring task. Max Payne 1 and 2 work, 1 more so, because of the deliberately slow bullet travel which makes combat far more involving as you need to track the movement of enemies, your distance from them, and manage how you engage based on these factors.

Most games with pointer controls do not experiment past them, the bullets go to where you point them and there's very few additional mechanics. Often when there are additional systems, they behave randomly in a way that is more frustrating than fun, as there is no system to outsmart, merely dice rolls deciding if you're hitting or not.

Pointer combat being enough for most consumers has made it the dominant form of engagement in shooting games. I'd much rather see a shooter with lock-on aim that encourages you to dodge around enemy shots, using advanced movement and having the aiming part taken care of just for the sake of more inventive gameplay.

LA Noire definitely stands out and fits into its 40s/50s theme well. It's quite distinguished from the other three titles, which all blend into one another and can barely be told apart on aesthetics alone. This is even funnier since it and GTA V are both made by Rockstar yet can still readily be told apart.

I do agree though that hints of the proper atmosphere are there, but it's definitely incomplete and improper. The genre is somewhat ill-defined in my opinion, but I still can't say it feels at all right from any perspective and, really, just feels like GTA V but with a little more chrome, which is boring as fuck.

As an aside from all that, I feel that the gameplay is completely off the mark and that the tactical shooter sort of way CP2020 ran is not going to exist in any shape or form.

For some, they might take this and be okay with it, but for those who are not into coprophilia, this is unacceptable and something to be scorned. I almost always go for the smooth talking cocky hot shot whenever i first play an RPG and boost that charisma stat to the max at the expense of strength and/or intelligence. First character in an RPG is always hard since you don't know the mechanics of the game yet to make a proper choice. Making a CHA character in Fallout 3 or in New Vegas is quite different, for instance.

So what I'll probably do is making a generic merc with some support skills to get through the game in a shooty shooty bang bang way first.

Then I'll make a netrunner if that's a viable way to play.

Then I'll make a cyberpsychopath for the hell of it.

Saving the cyberpsychopath for last since, if there's one thing I learned playing RPGs is that any Evil Route and anything similar to it should be saved for last since you'll be missing a lot of content if you opt for it.
