Playing through the games, the franchise is pretty enjoyable. The original DKC trilogy is pretty solid, yet more challenging than the Mario games of their era. DK64 is my favorite game of the series, though it overdid with the collectithon and backtracking. The Retro Studios games are pretty good, though DKCR kinda lacked but is still solid while Tropical Freeze is when Retro finally got the feel for the franchise. I personally wish that DK64 gets a remake by Retro or Retro making a new DK game that's an open 3D platformer instead of another 2D platform country game. Anyway, discuss the series.

What a coincidence, I've recently decided on playing through the entire DKC trilogy for Fall, seemed like a series with fitting vibes, especially DKC3 in which the setting reminds me a lot of where I live in the Midwest. Plus I have a lot of memories about playing DKC with cousins at Thanksgiving. I plan on finishing by late September / early October and then I'll be set on playing more horror / spooky games. I'm about halfway through DKC2 and now I remember what it's like to have real fun with video games again. Seriously, we're talking top level favorite game material. DKC1 was kind of boring in my opinion, it had it's moments, but there was little variety. It's like a Diet equivalent, you wouldn't prefer it, but you'll drink it if it's there for some flavor.
When do you think we could be getting a third game in the Returns trilogy? And what kind of theme could it have compared to the other games? I wouldn't mind a revamp of the theme DKC3 had, really comfy looking in my opinion. And I wouldn't mind a new villain like the other Returns games are doing, but I wish Nintendo would do more with K.Rool and the Kremlings. Or Crocodile Isle and the Northern Kremisphere

How would you go about making another 3D Donkey Kong game? Same as Donkey Kong 64 or more Donkey Kong Country-esque with your typical banana coins and whatnot to collect or more like Mario 3D World where you get to the end of a stage? I'd opt for something more like the original games where you can go to the end of a stage, but with collectibles hidden around to fully complete it and unlock more levels. I wish Lanky Kong could be given a slight redesign and included more, Chunky's already perfect. I hate Tiny Kong though, both designs of her.

This. All around, this. I'm sorely disappointed Donkey Kong Racing was cancelled. Would've loved the idea of riding the animal buddies in races and whatnot, and hopefully it could come back if Retro or other devs are interested. Although I feel a couple of the Kongs might need redesigns or slight tweaks to fit the overall aesthetic presentation of the entire Kong Family.
Sometimes I feel Nintendo doesn't realize how truly big Donkey Kong is or means to people, same goes for most of their other IPs. I could easily do without a Zelda or Kirby every odd year or so.

Nintendo dropped the ball in a couple places in Mario Odyssey in my opinion. Who are these humans? Where did they come from? Why is their city a floating island? How did they get there? How was it built? Etc, etc. Basic questions you should ask when world building, but Nintendo seems to think only in gameplay sense and their explanation is that "They're there to contrast with how cartoony Mario is."
If I could've, I would've hired the guy who redesigned Donkey Kong to come up with some human designs that match his and Mario's style. If not, I'd still have them designed to resemble Donkey Kong in the way that humans resemble apes.
This also had me think of a question. In the Mario world, was Donkey Kong named after New Donk City or New Donk City named after Donkey Kong?

>"They're there to contrast with how cartoony Mario is."
And I can live with that, but then there's Pauline.
e37790 No.15444329
>>15444293
Because it's Nintendo tradition to leave something halfassed or frustrating. Their logic is on a whole different level than our own. I would've attempted to have them match Pauline or even the original Donkey Kong arcade designs. And if Pauline were to still look different I'd have her say something "I haven't looked the same since I visited you in the Mushroom Kingdom" or something similar, implying it's a side effect of the magic there. At least something to explain it.
Speaking of the original Donkey Kong arcade games, I'm disappointed Stanley isn't in New Donk City considering how easy it would've been to implement him there. I know there's really no reason for him to come back, but it would've been a nice reference. Could've had a moon mission where you have to control him with Cappy and have to keep bugs away from the city gardens or similar.
Mario Odyssey was disappointing as a whole, mechanically, it's a good game. But it's worlds, design, and challenges are lacking.

Meant to talk on that last one. Basically, what my main problem is with Odyssey is that most of the locals have the same problem that Galaxy has where the area is suspended above a void. While a few places don't do it (Ice place, resort, lost island, lake) most places do, but they at least play with it. The Wooded Kingdom, for example, has it, but it plays with it in the void is actually a doorway to the Dark forest and the Cap kingdom has the fog around it and the cap ships. The problem is that the others, like the luncheon kingdom and most others, hover above a void of death.
I detest the "void" design as it makes the place feel more like a toy set instead of the "worlds" they should be. Even the goddamn mushroom kingdom suffers from this and it makes it feel smaller and more remote than if it was surrounded by high walls.
On another note, more Dong musical numbers. It's a sin this dude didn't get anymore work after his talent here.

I'd hate to cheat and look up a walkthrough or guide, but I'm getting close to it, because I can't seem to find any logical reasoning to the placement of these rooms in the water levels.
>DKC3 is full of gimmick levels
Everyone keeps saying this, but what does that mean? Both DKC1 and DKC2 had levels with mechanics that were only used once, so how is it any different? If anything, that makes it sound more fun

They say that because each level has something distinct about it, or at least most do past lake orangutanga. My main beef is how lame and unnecessary kiddy is.
More important than that though, is tropical freeze any good? I hated how returns had that stupid blow mechanic and a much shorter roll, along with the enemies not feeling as well designed as the previous sets (crab claws being the most minor indicator of spikes possible for one example).

<Donkey Kong
<Donkey Kong Jr.
<Donkey Kong 3
<Some Game and Watch shit
<Donkey Kong '94
<Donkey Kong Jr. Math
Pretty solid, especially for the time. I like Jr. more than the original, but 3 almost feels like a Game and Watch game itself. Donkey Kong '94 is a great puzzle platformer that emphasizes platforming over puzzles, which most of the genre does the opposite.
>Rare Era
<Donkey Kong Country 1-3
<Donkey Kong Land 1-3
<Donkey Kong 64
<Diddy Kong Racing
Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 are two of the best games ever made. 3 is good but not as. 64 is a piece of shit. I think Diddy Kong Racing is actually better than Mario Kart 64.

<Mario vs Donkey Kong
<Mario vs Donkey Kong 2-whatever it is now
<Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
<Donkey Konga 1-3
<DK King of Swing
<DK Jungle Climber
<Donkey Kong Barrel Blast
Jungle Beat is easily my favorite Japanese developed Donkey Kong and creates a whimsical fantasy world I'm sad we never revisited. The first Mario vs Donkey Kong acts like a sequel to Donkey Kong '94 and is even better. The second game on turns the series into braindead lemmings clones that all suck. Donkey Konga and Barrel Blast are ok, I guess. King of Swing and Jungle Climber are actually spiritual successors to Clu Clu Land and aren't bad but nothing special either. It's also worth mentioning Rare made pretty good remakes of the Country trilogy on GBA and a not great remake of Diddy Kong Racing on DS.
>Retro Era
<Donkey Kong Country Returns
<Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Returns is a fun but flawed experience and Tropical Freeze is where Retro really shows the know what they are doing. I hope to see a third game in the new series.

Donkey Kong '94, Mario vs. Donkey Kong 1, DKC 1-3, Donkey Kong Country Returns & Tropical Freeze are the must plays of this list. Everything else is give or take but if you are limited in what games to play and not play and need a short list you'll get the fullest experience with these games.

Finished DKC2 100%, now onto DKC3. I'm really enjoying the atmosphere and aesthetic of DKC3 so far, more so than 1 or 2. I don't mind Kiddy Kong as much either, although I wish if he were to comeback he'd have a redesign. He does feel kind of out of place though and I have a hard time imaging what his motivations are. I can understand why Dixie would want to rescue Donkey and Diddy, but Kiddy's a baby, what's his reasoning?
Also fuck Chainlink Chamber in particular, that DK coin is outright unfair and unintuitive.

Kiddy is just along for the ride I guess, also I fucking hate controlling that fate ass of his bouncing on the water is fun though
I used to like DKC3 the most out of the trilogy, but I think that's because it was the one I played first. 2 is the best one if I had to choose

>Kiddy is just along for the ride I guess
Doesn't really make sense as to why he's playable then. I mean, when you take a hit as Dixie Kong, you switch to playing solo as Kiddy, so it never really made sense as to why he has motivation to go solo I guess. I don't mind Kiddy Kong much, he just doesn't feel like he fits. If he was bumped up a bit in age to be more like 3 or so and given a design to match, I think it could work. Also if they explained his reasoning for helping other than just being there. Like if Donkey Kong was also his Uncle or if he had a "full of himself" Scrappy Doo-like personality.
I think DKC3 has a lot going for it so far, it's definitely not as bad as others make it out to be.

What do you think it would be like or how it should be like? Donkey Kong Country games have always had really good theming.

Typical Jungle Vibes
>DKC2
Pirate / Goonies-esque Vibes

Well, Kiddy is Dixie's cousin, and on second thought why would a toddler need reasoning for going on an adventure? That being said, he does feel out of place. Nevertheless I have good memories of the game, it does get a lot more hate than I think it deserves.

Chunky Kong was actually Kiddy's older brother, so that could kinda work?
e37790 No.15508019
>>15507852
I'm aware of that, and that's why I think their design should more similarly match. There was a rumor that Chunky and Tiny were originally supposed to be Kiddy and Dixie but Rare thought they should only use characters from the original Donkey Kong Country or use new ones. Which is also why default Kritters were back and King K. Rool didn't have a persona until the end. That rumor may also explain why Lanky is a fan favorite. He wasn't a copy of any character and was his own thing. But I actually like Chunky too and Tiny is the only Kong I hate outright, I can't stand either of her designs.
Would be cool if all the Kongs made a comeback though, even if they were only NPCs. Except for Tiny, Tiny was a mistake.

This. It got a lot of buzz in the first place because of the Sonic Adventure vibes.
That said in hindsight, I do wish the humans were more proportional to Mario and Pauline. But I'm very glad it wasn't the usual Mushroom Kingdom aesthetic Mario place, much more glad it was the old Donkey Kong Big City/Big Ape City. I've waited ages for a Classic Donkey Kong reference in a big Mario title and finally got it.

Still one of the best Gameboy games to this day and an example of how to do a proper remake, my only surprise was how short it was now that I'm older. I didn't expect to beat the entire game in a few hours in one sitting.
e37790 No.15526785
Fuck all the haters, Donkey Kong Country 3 was amazing. Sure, it's not as similar to 2, but it has it's own strengths and charms to make up for it. You can call the levels "gimmicky" but it didn't feel so, they can't be that easily described. It fit the tone of the game, it was sporadic and chaotic hence Kaos. Adding to the chaos is the frantic design of the levels. You're expected to learn a new mechanic quickly or have little to no time to think much about things. The game is constantly pushing you along, making it feel a bit more ominous. In DKC2, you knew Donkey Kong was kidnapped and was being held ransom, he could be brought back. In DKC3 all you know is that both Diddy and Donkey Kong are missing, you don't know what happened to them. Sure, the Kremlings are there, but there's more sense of dread. They all seemed unhinged and less organized than they were in 2, as they don't wear clothes anymore and appear more grotesque. And sure the theming isn't as strong as in 2, but in a way, it applies it's own theme to the entire game.
Each game is great in their own regards, there's no use arguing one game over the other when they all do different things well.

People keep saying this is fake news, even Miyamoto denying that was what he meant, but re-reading the interview still screams of butthurt to me. They say it was a mistranslation but I've never seen anyone provide an actual translation, just saying it was mistranslated and Miyamoto going back saying it was not true and that he worked very closely with DKC (which I do believe regardless).
I get Miyamoto being butthurt. Nintendo kept pressuring him to use the graphics like DKC (which aged terribly) over Yoshi's Island (which aged beautifully), and he finally snapped.

I tend to disagree, I think DKC's graphics hold up well especially in comparison to the 3D models they were based off of. Sonic Adventure 1 would be a game I think of for graphics that haven't aged well. And a game like Kirby's Dreamland 3 is one where I think the graphics have aged spectacularly well.
I hear the mistranslation or the original quote was supposed to go something along the lines of "Donkey Kong Country proves graphics is what pushes games further rather than gameplay." And it was supposed to be a jab at companies like Sega who kept pushing for add-ons like the 32X and Sega CD. That's who he was really upset with. It seems downright stupid to speak strong negative opinions about a game you're producing.

Shitty shiggy is a notorious egomaniac and couldn't stand the fact that a few limes used one of his characters to make a better platformer than he ever could. For another example of said egomania, see the star fox zero debacle and how he still hates majora's mask.

I feel like you'd be comparing apples to oranges. The bonus rooms in the new DK games are just "collect all the bananas really fast" to get the token. DKC1 was just extra bananas for lives, DKC2 had challenges with gimmicks to earn the tokens, which was more varied and fun.
The platforming is legitimately challenging, especially if you try to speedrun or do the time trials, you'll notice the levels are designed in a subtle way to facilitate it. The design is really good.
