They "stole" Nier's daughter, for their own personal gain, causing distress to Nier, who had done nothing to them. Likewise they were cutting down hundreds of people so that they could "steal" Nier's daughter for their own personal gain, causing distress to Nier who had done nothing wrong - and, more importantly, causing the distress that comes with being dead to a whole lot of people besides Nier. Which, likewise again, was also what they were doing given just what having the Gestalts fused into their bodies would mean for all of those people who, again, had done nothing wrong.

The game's whole point is to explore the sorts of mindsets that could go into horrible, pointless atrocities like Israel's attack on the US in 2001 and the subsequent war in the middle east for the US. If the parties involved had had more perspective on what was going on, they could have stopped it all - that's the point, and that's the tragedy, in our world and in Nier's.

But what exactly would have been required (in terms of "more perspective") to make Nier's characters stop killing each-other and start working with each-other? A sense of sympathy strong enough to break through the steadfast assurance all of them had that what they were doing was just "the right thing?" A working understanding of the metaphysical/magical engineering processes that first went into the creation of Project Gestalt and that could be used by the characters to start fixing the Project's problems instead of brute-forcing their way through the Project's problems by killing each-other?

What the game raises by exploring what sorts of mindsets go into atrocities is the question of what sorts of mindsets could prevent atrocities, and that's still an open question by the game's end because it's not a question that has an easy, universal answer.

Humanity is long gone, to be sure, along with the aliens, but we know that the androids and machines alike can carry the torch for humanity. Hopefully enough cultural and genetic information has been stored in the moon and/or on the ark that humanity could be brought back to life in some form, but even if humanity truly is lost, I think what's most important about humanity still lives on in automata they and the aliens have left behind.

The problem with androids and machines "carrying the torch" is that the androids have so much of their self rooted in muh humanity that they basically become suicidally depressed when left on their own. They can only exist for humanity, which makes them incapable of moving on. The machines are similarly incapable for different reasons, they only copy humans, they can't actually think for themselves which again leaves nothing but stagnation at best.

The Replicants were supposed to be incapable of thinking for themselves, too.

Despite the claims you see in Route B that the machines will learn new ideas, try them out robotically, and then seemingly simply forget the lessons learned from them (which is as much a criticism of humanity as it is of the machines), we do see a lot of independent thought and intellectual growth from the machines over the course of the game - there's the whole second half of the game, after all.

And as for (the implication in the game of) the Androids being psychologically engineered to be dependant on the now-absent humanity - again, we see the characters in Nier: Automata transcending what are supposed to be their limits, and the emotional problems we see in the game's characters are for very different reasons to that altogether: We have 9S's emotional breakdown (after the death of another Android) to look to in terms of a character being suicidally depressed left on their own, but that's a very different matter entirely. Not to mention the suicidal depression we see from a number of machines for different reasons, and the hatred expressed by 2B for the pointless, entropic struggle of life in general in the game's prologue…

We really don't. Discounting the red girls that I'm not sure can even be counted as "machine", everything the machines do is either directly copying human behavior with little to no understanding, or suffering the consequences thereof which almost invariably leads to a loop reset. Even before Pascal's village is wiped out none of the machines there show any actual growth in their sidequests. Pascal himself seems to show the potential, but then he gets reset only to start over again. I think it's fair to say that that reset isn't a coincidence, but actually part of the machines design, it will happen one way or another.

The worst offenders of course are the forest kingdom who spent something like 200 years with a "baby" machine and still haven't figured out why it won't grow. Once they get on a human script they forget all logic and reason that doesn't follow that same script, the fact that it's intended for humans and not machines isn't something they are capable of processing.

As for the androids, they simply stop reproducing (manufacturing, obviously) and gradually die. That's what the history tells us. It doesn't really matter that the individual androids seem capable of doing other things, the "species" as a whole needs a purpose or they will eventually die off, and their hard coded purpose is to serve humanity. The best we could hope for is that they find some kind of logic that allows them to knowingly serve post-mortem, but I don't see that happening.

Both story and gameplay are tailored to young Nier:

- The timeskip is uselss with papa Nier, while it makes a huge difference with young Nier.

- New weapons are introduced after the timeskip, because young Nier was too young to use anything but small swords. This limitation makes no sense with papa Nier.

Yet, the relationship between papa Nier and the rest of the cast is much more likable and uncommon, while young Nier is just an anime standard.

Including the creation of The Tower, in all of its multi-billion-dollar-R&D-cost-glory? Including the creation of The Ark?

Of course, what I think must be mentioned as I give my points is that going by how the game presents it, the level of growth seen on the part of the machines is something that's very new to them - and at the same time, us homo sapiens sapiens have been establishing and destroying civilizations for thousands and thousands of years, with so many of our capabilities as a people that we have now having only come into being in the last hundred-odd years. Then there's the concept of the technological singularity, with the implications, if you take it seriously, that has about how you should view the growth of a people…

We don't have much of the Androids' history, really, but what I see as the most noteworthy points in it are the developments in magical engineering that would have had to have gone into the modern weaponry of Nier: Automata's world, the design and construction of (and the launching of, or the design and construction of the in-orbit machinery that would otherwise be used for the construction of) the orbital stations, the construction of the moon's servers, and, even though it's something that was done for the exact reason of "purpose" that you describe, the manufacturing of the continued machine wars - I see that actually as a refutation of the way you see this matter of "purpose," because in order to be able to grasp the concept of manufacturing that "purpose" (as the Androids that created YoRHa would have had to), those doing so would have had to be able to step outside of the mindset driven by that "purpose," the one that you state they shouldn't be able to step outside of, and see it for the artifice that it is.

I think you underestimate the potential of an intelligent mind, really. One way of setting an intelligent mind apart from a robotic process is to see that an intelligent mind is capable of stepping outside its assumptions and transcending its limitations. Isn't the game's characters doing that what the game's plot is all about, really?

The premise of the robutt-android dichotomy is actually pretty simple. God is dead, the robutts kill their God, indulge in excess and degeneracy, actively self destructing, trying to emulate natural selection to breach a new paradigm.

The androids instead refuse to accept the fact that their God is dead, they stagnate and they slaughter each other needlessly just to cling to a purpose that no longer exists.

One thing I think is worth mentioning in regard to the Androids, too, is the mention in Nier: Automata of Accord, Drakengard 3's timeline-recorder-and-intervener Android. What does her presence in Nier's world (and in the contemporary world of Nier: Automata, specifically) say about what we should make of Nier: Automata's Androids, about the history of those Androids, and about the capabilities of those Androids?

If the Drakengard God is supposed to the Abrahamic God why doesn't he just flood the world or do another Sodom and Gomorrah? Why go through all this red eye/angel stuff when you can just nuke them?

Awesome, I was about to make a thread about the game.

Would've never expected to see one already there.

Anyway, I installed the DLC today.

The remixes are superb, they add a nice electro feel to the music.

What I really want to say though is HOLY SHIT I was sweating bullets doing the 1st room.

Especially at that part with all of the armored mage shades shooting fucking truckloads of bullets. And the huge armored shade.

I had to use all of my healing items. I will never make it to the end of the DLC.

The first one seems good in the beggining when you think its about a father trying to save your daughteru, then it turns into mindless grinding and retarded weeb shit

Automata was fucking garbage, whoever finished that game is brainded
