But we're talking about TES games, they are always shit, and they're shit in ways no other game dares to be.
If they don't have fun gameplay (and none of them does, Skyrim is merely the lesser evil even with mods), progressing through quests and finding lore becomes a chore.
If they don't have a good story and good lore (and simply giving the player more stuff to read isn't enough), then you have no reason to bother exploring and doing quests.
For me, Oblivion is waay too deep in the "shit gameplay" side, while Skyrim's world is not atrocious enough to make me ignore anything but the main quest (some side quests are pretty terrible tho).
