You have to press the buttons at different times to win. Sometimes you have to press the buttons a bit longer for a result that is slightly different unless you are at a place where pressing the button a bit longer does not produce a result that is slightly different. Winning is made by pressing the correct sequence of button for the correct duration. There can be different sequences to win at the same level but they have an influence in the long run. The bonuses are important. You can lose your bonuses by pressing the buttons too many times in a bad manner. Once it happened to me and could not win the level because I had used up all my bonuses. There is a youtube description for a gameplay footage of this game that says "Gameplay des Spiels Pop Up für den GameBoy .". It means "gameplay for the game Pop Up for the Gameboy" in German, I believe. The game is not German as far as I know but it was available in Europe a few decades ago for the Gameboy.

Eventually, you give up on completing the objective and kill yourself instead, with multiple endings depending on how you choose to kill yourself. The twist is that secretly, the only way to complete the main objective is actually by killing yourself, and you accidentally completed the main objective by giving up on it.
