Hey, coming from /agdg/ cause the board is sortof dead at the moment, can any nodev anons here with modelling experience please tell me how to fix this shit? Ive googled the issue but i cant find anything remotely related. Its really getting on my nerves and i want to move on to uv and texturing.

what happens if you triangle everything

>>15424491

well its gonna get triangled before it gets drawn on screen anyways, thats how gpus work

im just wondering why it cant render coplanar polygons as one continous smooth surface

Why don't you ask in the /adgd/ thread on /v/?

Polygon normals have no say in smooth shading. It's all based on vertex normals, and because each vertex connecting to that rail on the top has a different normal varying from facing left to facing right, you're getting this weird paper fan effect. Also it seems that the handle has normals facing inwards, but I'm not certain about that

One more thing: the closer your triangles are to equilateral, the more natural your normals are going to look. With those incredibly slim elingated triangles all converging to but two vertices, you're very much asking for freaky normals

thank you anon, ill get to fixing it

also, i had a thought, would using a completely blue normal map eliminate the odd lighting?

i didnt know there was one, ill go check the catalog

Use hard edges you goof

304421  No.15425465

>>15425455

Im using Wings3d, not sure it allows for that

Stop using a shit tier modelling program then

3DS Max crashes every 10-15 minutes, or everytime i try to animate anything, and Blender is the most over-engineered piece of shit in years

I guess ill pirate Maya and give it a try

304421  No.15427542

>>15425492

Also, Wings3d is pretty damn good for basic modelling and quick edits, very intuitive and the interface is simple and comfy

I'm a Blender guy sorry you're retarded and keep looking for a different modeling tool to make up for the fact you suck, but that is happening because you have shade smoothed a hard edge. In blender, you'd separate the smooth faces by edges, or use the edge split modifier. You should be able to do it somehow in wings3d. In max they are called shade smooth groups IIRC. But I am mostly a freetard so I do most of my work in Linux.

Oh shit nigger, turns out Wings does have a option for hard edges

Here's pics of before and after hard edges, thanks for the advice

no problem faggot. keep improving, if you are just getting started out this is a decent place to start. But you need to understand blender, wings, max, maya, etc are all just tools you can use to make a mesh. They all make the same things.

You are going to enjoy modelling more if you can learn how mesh works, and then adapt your knowledge of mesh to how to use the tools blender, max, maya, wings, etc gives you to do what you need to accomplish. End of the day you're just making shit the GPU can chug through and display. You could even make collada files in a text editor if you were autistic enough.

I understand the geometry behind it i just didnt know that the software was using vertex normals instead of face normals for shading

your vertex normals are wrong,

also dont use wings3d the normals get all fucked up in that program

just get blender, its also free
