When I was a kid I stuck him as a Black Mage for his entire tenure and he shat out damage at 150 a fucking pop in the 3rd tier of spells, he wasn't even slow or anything. 150 is pretty much enough to KO most assholes in 2 hits, which was good for me because I stuck Marche into Paladin with double swords and was an idiot because he was super fucking slow, didn't have movement equipment and so on.
When I came back I was wise and threw him into a Gunner/Mog-knight with Ultima Charge, broke that fucking game, especially since I took the time to make Marche into a Blue Mage and took the time to learn all the abilities, which pretty much breaks the damned game in half since their abilities include fucking Angel Whisper's autolife fuckery and Night, which just puts fucking everyone to sleep. So Marche would Night everyone while Montblanc would fucking snipe them with a handcannon all the fucking way across the map.
Montblanc's a Moogle, he's never weak. All the races have one strategy that breaks fights in half and Moogles are the best at it.

It's a shame that, if memory serves, Klarth's summons don't scale quite as well as Arche's spells (nor does he have various levels of them in comparison), and while there's certainly more emphasis on him gaining them than pretty much any non Indignation spell, I remember mainly just using Maxwell or Luna when not trying to hit specific weaknesses, and Arche was still the overall better caster (though using both in the party was usually the best set up). Makes me wonder if they changed him up some in Cross edition for the PSP, beyond his summons no longer interrupting the flow of combat (which is also the case with Arche's mid and high level spells as well).

If you're going the English patch route, I'd recommend using Phantasian Productions' patch for the PS1, as it probably wasn't out when you played it previously. The plot really did not want it to happen. As much as the ending was foreshadowed, I was still annoyed. It had to have no real resolution because Zestiria needed to happen, which also meant the game's plot and general world suffered more than the typical Tales game despite a pretty good party.
