They want a service competitive to PSN and XBLA, and seeing how they lack basic functionality to the point where I was fucking was able to redeem Sonic Mania before release is fucking asinine. Normally the monthly updates come at the start of the month (wow!) but the one for September still has not launched and no new content has been revealed. The only official (English) word on it is that it's coming "early September".

"early" implies sooner than "second half", but it wouldn't be the first time NoA was wrong. It might not go live until the paywall does.

It's also possible they'll intentionally hold off on this month's Splatfests until after the paywall is up.

Uh, I think you should be confirming if it works for anything more than Splatoon 2 and Smash. And at this point, that's all it's good for. They know it's a shitty deal so they're trying to liven it up with free virtual console games. And I already feel kind of ripped off, I filled out surveys to get games like SMB3 on Wii U and now they're going to want me to pay for SMB3 again. The worst part is, after Nintendo overcharged for ROMS, $20 a year for 20+ NES games seams like a good deal, when it clearly isn't.

Miyamoto recently has been talking about how buying dlc or in-game purchases is an old model and should be abandoned in favor of a subscription model. Which makes it seem like the online service will be used to fund support and free updates for first party games. If they actually do that I might actually be okay with it. I bought it pretty much exclusively as an emulation machine, and I'm excited about being able to play some Sega fucking Master System games on the go - then docking it and continuing the game on the livingroom TV. And I bought it early enough that I was able to get one of the pre-factory patch models. Now I'm just waiting until CFW matures to the level of Pro or Henkaku before jumping onboard.

How hard a concept is this to understand? Nintendo's a japanese company, it's primary audience is japanese. These are people that talk with each other more frequently with a cellphone than in person, at least for the younger demographics. So obviously they are gonna focus that app since it's the most confortable for their main audience.

I think you're exagerating here. Splatoon and Arms have so far been my experience playing online and it's pretty nice that they are supported right out, with nothing special on your part to enjoy the multiplayer.

Matching with friends is also substantially better too.

They still do. There are more Steam games that use Valve's dedicated servers than there games on PSN/XBL that use those game's servers. Most games are still Peer to Peer, even highly promoted First and Second party titles like Uncharted 4 and State of Decay 2. Many, like Destiny, are a hybrid of dedicated and peer to peer.
