i had a PSP once, and i was pretty happy with it considering the price i got it for and how i used it, i hacked it, got an mini sd card/memory card adapter loaded full with games, and enjoyed it a heck of a lot for the most part. i played through peace walker, mother 3 and chocobo racing, all were awesome games… it was a pain in the ass to convert ps1 iso's to the format the psp used, and often didn't work, for whatever reason, there was no integrated store for homebrew downloads like with the 3DS and Wii, which was a shame, as it was a great convinience, and emulation quality varied heavily between system and games, which as a shame.

i loved the umd format, the design of the umds always reminded me of an alternate universe where floppy disks never got replaced by cds, and looked really retro-futuristic in a cool way. yes, they had their drawbacks, the drive took up alot of space in the console which could've been used more efficiently, however,

i can't help but look back fondly of it, because a friend already once loaned one to me, and we had some fun times together.

The best portable emulation machine of its time, and still the most convenient and readily available one on the market. A modded PSP was something that had no competition.

Personally, I even got a lot of usage out of the multimedia functions. Saved my ass when my MP3 player broke, back when MP3 players were a thing.

PSP is cool

I just downloaded the Ever17 port for it the other day, I never realized it had been translated until someone posted about it on nicoblog

I bought it for piracy, but I've actually wound up buying all the English release games I spent significant time on (except for Gurumin. I would have bought it but they gave away the PC version for free) except Dungeons and Dragons Tactics (which is impossible to find).

Of all time so far really. Vita died and nothing came close to it ever since.

I like having physical copies, especially of games I like, but UMD being a shit medium outweighs it in the case of the PSP. Though, I do suppose most games on it are pretty cheap these days due to low demand if one did want to. Still fucking stupid that SCEA had that regulation on PS1-to-PSP ports preventing ones that didn't have 10% (I think) changed/added content being cleared for NA release. I guess it's not that big a deal for most games (and the system was the Piratestation Portable), but then you've got cases where the original PS1 game was rare/expensive and no official PSN version, and in which even a native port would have been welcome. At least with Tales of Eternia, PAL saw the PSP port but even then Bamco wouldn't even touch it there, leaving fucking Ubisoft to pick it up (and glitch the fuck out of a print run or two until fixing it).

>Vita died

Its homebrew, piracy, modding and emulation scene is ramping up like crazy though?

Not to mention the Vita can perfectly emulate the PSP and also use the PSP's homebrew inside the PSP emulator

Its only going to "officially" die in the west by the middle of next year that is basically when no more new games will come out on it, maybe a handful, but there are still chances that real games will come out on it and probably by the end of next year or the beginning to middle of 2020.

I never said I actually USED the UMDs. In fact I only opened one to check the hash (it matched the dump I used). The only good thing the SCEA PS1>PSP rule did was force Square Enix to include the DLC with the English release of Tactics Ogre (most of the new content was actually DLC in Nippon)

I think a modded vita is pretty superior to the psp. For its time it was a beast but the vita is capable of the psp + more. Granted both are pretty much dead at this point but as long as you take care of your vita theres plenty of life left in them both.

I've been playing my PSP all day today, as a matter of fact. I'm just taking a break to shitpost a little right now. Persona still has me addicted even after 9 years.

The system is great. The PSP's ergonomics are perhaps the best of any handheld, and the pixelated screen and hardware buzzing sound add a lot to the atmosphere.

I only got a PSP 3 years ago. Back in middle and high school I was turned off by it because everyone around me was praising it as the best shit ever even though no one was even capable of recommending a single game for it and just praised LOOK AT MUH GRAFIX.

UMDs were ultimately a good thing since they allowed more data storage for games (1.8GB maximum, compared to the 512MB max size of the DS cartridge) even if they were actually crap for everything else (reading speed, noise, battery eater, etc). I wouldnt want to own any of those physicals, but they still helped in bringing over ports of home console games or let devs to be a little more ambitious with their projects. So I dont think I can completely spit on this format despite its obvious flaws.

>>15402283

>that is basically when no more new games will come out on it, maybe a handful, but there are still chances that real games will come out on it

I would honestly love more ports of old nippon PS2 games on the Vita, like the PSP had, but this might be not possible considering how a lot of previous studios closed down (or dont give a sign of life) or some went mobileshit instead since then. The PSP was also more within the PS2's lifespan too, which I suppose it made those ports possible.

Cant complain much about this year's vita releases however, we got Uta 1 remake, Bullet Girls Phantasia, Super Robot Wars X, a definitive version of God Wars, Fate Extella Link, Dokoku Soshite (another good remake of an old PC98/Saturn point-and-click mystery game), Metal Max Xeno, and a Virtual On title. Supposedly the Catherine game will come out soon this fall.

>UMDs were ultimately a good thing since they allowed more data storage for games (1.8GB maximum, compared to the 512MB max size of the DS cartridge)

A fair point, but it was the amount of loading and battery wear that killed them.

>I would honestly love more ports of old nippon PS2 games on the Vita, like the PSP had

I like the Vita for what it was, but it did seem a bit of a shame more companies didn't try to make it double as a PS2P, so to speak. At the same time though, various PS2 HD collections on it had enough issues at times.

>Cant complain much about this year's vita releases

>Metal Max Xeno

NISA is reason enough to complain.

>A fair point, but it was the amount of loading and battery wear that killed them

Yeah again, it had obvious flaws. But another thing worth to note is that you could find 18+ eroge VNs (and adult content in general) being printed as UMD Videos for the PSP since they didnt have to go through Sony's and CERO's approval that way. That's one thing that sadly disappeared with the Vita. I own the umd isos of School Days, Summer Days and a few others but good luck finding the rest in the internet tho.

>I like the Vita for what it was, but it did seem a bit of a shame more companies didn't try to make it double as a PS2P, so to speak.

I believe it's a whole combination of

<Sony's poor advertising of the Vita in the West (Japan has constantly been advertising it on the other hand) and constant jacked up prices of the memory card

<Old studios no longer alive, or went elsewhere to cater to a different audience/market

<Better PC & home console hardware mean devs can be freely lazy now, while handhelds have still the same restrictions that force them to think things over.

I also like the Vita for what it is, but I would have been delighted by something like Growlanser collections (since only the first one and the fourth were ported on the PSP), another Boku no Natsuyasumi (childhood summer vacation simulator), the other PS2 Tales of, GrimGrimoire, Rogue Galaxy, the Zero/Siren games, an actual good Ridge Racer (I still play the PSP RR2 to this day), etc

>At the same time though, various PS2 HD collections on it had enough issues at times.

I recall hearing the Jak&Daxter was the most fucked up one. God of War Collection had the first game having issues, and I read Ratchet&Clank had various bugs on both the PS3 and Vita versions. MGS, FF10 and Sly were fine to my experience. Zone of the Enders Collection never ever

>NISA is reason enough to complain.

I was speaking more about nip release themselves. As far as I know, NISA stopped to give a shit about the Vita, to the point of rather porting games like Coven & Labyrinth of Refrain (a Vita exclusive originally) to the Switch instead. This generated enough salt that made their forums into lockdown for a while.

I'll admit I was surprised to have run across KxKxK for the PSP on a download site, before they purged eroge and straight up hentai from their listings.

>the other PS2 Tales of

I still find it weird Abyss went to the 3DS instead, but it hit a different brand market, I suppose. Does seem odd that Destiny DC never got a port to the PSP or Vita like Destiny 2 and Rebirth did with the PSP.

I take it you're talking about Nicoblog. If my memory serves me right, the purge happened due of a drama related to Rapelay (someone uploaded it on the website) and the admin in charge went full moralfag whiteknight following this.

That shit was fucking gay, and a good amount of rare niche shit completely disappeared because of this fag

I still have my Fat 1000. Thing's a brick. Dropped it a couple of times where a lesser device would have given up the ghost, but it's still going. I don't use it anymore though.

I don't think I actually downloaded it. Priorities were on actual games at the time as I'd just put CFW on the system. Nor did I expect them to purge eroge so soon after. But I think what was uploaded had just been a UMD video of the OVA episodes. I could be wrong though. Also tried looking for archives. Site's exempt from wayback machine, and unfortunately archive.is has very little actual section/game content. It does look like the game's got a PC version as most eroge tend to, though I suppose that's not as conveniently on the go.

The PSP is probably the last machine that gives me lost future vibes

Playing it at the time, I could see the future of handheld gaming - essentially a PS2 in my pocket with full-featured Grand Theft Auto and Ace Combat games (Yeah yeah it wasn't quite as powerful, but close enough, and it was only a matter of time before San Andreas Stories…) with all sorts of neat little features. Eventually the web-browser would get YouTube and that'd be great too. But none of those things happened. The PS Vita delivered on a hardware level, but the games never came. Now you can get San Andreas and YouTube on your phone with much better battery life, but it's just not the same as what I imagined at the time. I find it quite normal to get that lost-future vibe looking back at older consoles when technological development was at a faster pace and mid-size studios could still compete, but the PSP was very late in the game in that regard.

Excellent system all around. Shame all the replacement batteries I've got have been useless, leaving it portable only in the sense it contains it's own screen.

bump cuz i just got a PSP 3000 last month, same one as the OP.

when i bought it, the thumbstick was covered in nigger feces. very obvious since it's white.

a trick is to get a qtip and put soap on it, the thumbstick looks brand new now.

also years ago i imported one of the japanese monster hunter portable 3rd special edition PSP's. at the time they were the same price as a normal PSP and i wondered why.

and i knew why as soon as i got it. they look gorgeous in the promo images but IRL they look like a cereal box toy. way cheaper than a standard PSP's build quality.

I have two psp 1000 fat and one with a smashed screen, they're still sold by retro gaming shops at the local flea market for 60$, one of my functionning one had the volume going down by itself (it was probably the home/start controls that were broke) and I disassembled it and my broken screen one and switched the screens, very easy to do you just unscrew 6 screws, clench out the frame holding the screen with a knife and throw down the small switches that hold the circuit strips and switch the components, gotta love a device that straightforward to repair, that repaired my psp and I might even just get the components online to repair my other one to have a third one that I might gift my best friend with all his favorite ps1 games and emulators on it.

It's basically the best handheld out there when it comes to playing retro games and ps1 games, basically theres nothing that matches it beside a jailbroke phone and even then its probably easier to get the softwares for a psp 1000 than any other devices thanks to its modding scene.
