What stops you from binding your weapons to e.g. 123qerfcv for WASD layout? In case of Quake/Xonotic it works out okay. Besides, with ESDF you still need to stretch your hand to hit 7-9 anyway.

Currently using ESDF, Ctrl key isn't much of a problem, and the increased amount of keys reachable by my thumb offset any disadvantages the layout has, personally.
Sometimes I think of using 3WER so that I could reach for Function keys better and increase even more buttons for the thumb but the "3" key is aligned too slanted to the left and that might be bad for long term use and my three fingers.

I've switched over to TFGH a few days ago and although it is awkward getting used to using your pinky for keys other than shift and control at first, it becomes fucking fantastic once it clicks with your muscle memory. Never having to awkwardly take my hand off the mouse since I can just use my pinky instead is such a godsend for so many games I play. WASD for life, tried ESDF and went back because constantly putting my wrist at odd angles to hit ctrl/shift/alt was hurting and swapping ctrl/shift/alt to something like Q/A/Z was less efficient. I use YGHJ. Main reason is because it gives your thumb access to multiple buttons. Also more buttons than either WASD and ESDF. I do actually use all those buttons. Also for certain reasons I need to be able to hit the spacebar with both my thumb and (the lower joint of) my pinky.
Good for Xonotic because the game has a ton of buttons/weapons, and good for Warframe (Conclave pvp lol) because I do the whole GunZ thing where you set redundant keybinds so you have a backup way of performing a function if the finger you normally use is busy.
for fighters/shmups/action/platformers I use FYUI RAlt Right Num789+
