I remember an Anon from a while back talking about this genre of games, but I don't really remember much of what it was about. Are there any other "real time" RPGs that use trading cards as a basis for player actions in battles?

Lost KIngdoms 1 is meh, but 2 is pretty nifty. There are a few Yu-Gi-Oh games like this, with Over the Nexus being the last and best. Baten Kaitos and its sequel are great.

Should clarify that Baten Kaitos is turn based, but each turn is played out as a series of aggressive actions for offense and defense, playing cards from your hand to add outgoing damage, reduce incoming damage, heal, etc, with the sum total tallied at the end of the turn. There's also some further nuances as well.

And while magnus are certainly collectable, the first game is a completionist's nightmare, between one off photographs to take, and one particular item taking a VERY long time to rot into another (I think a 100% speedrun wound up tallying 300 something hours or so and the game was subsequently banned for it).

You should play Mega Man Battle Network. You move on a grid and fire your pea shooter in real-time, but your main attacks come from your hand of chips that you access about every 10 seconds. For the RPG bit, you can increase max health, unlock extra forms, and equip upgrade items.

Rough order of quality is 3>6=2>5>>1>4

Story doesn't matter so don't go chronologically.

Most of the non-fighting DBZ games are card-based RPGs for some reason but they're turn-based and the one I played on GBC was shit.

I seriously hope you don't do this. Play the fan translation of the remake of 1 in DS till you get bored of it, look up the twist then play 2.

Story matters, except in 1, and 4. 2 does a nice Gospel arc, 3 is the masterpiece, 5 is a return to a good artstyle, story and ends a few lines left in 3. 6 closes the games perfectly enough and if you're into more MMBN, the Anime was pretty okay. I don't know what the fuck happened in 4. The color palette was horrendous, the Django side quest was just meh, the solar sensor was atrocious. The soundtrack peaked in 3 and 6. 4 was also bad for music. I also can't talk on Star Force, I didn't played any of them.

I ripped the music (alongside a bunch of GBA games) recently. It really shows how few good songs it has.

There's also the fangame Shanghai EXE, which has a pretty extensive demo out with a basically finished engine (if you use an ability that randomizes chip rewards for battle you can actually get the standard chip library complete star with enough grinding) and saves are compatible between versions. Worthy of being up there the best of the series. Music is pretty good too.
