Not knowing how to use an orchestra effectively, but doing it anyway because it feels like Hollywood, is a problem that mostly only affects Western video games. Japanese games are largely free of this, and Yoko Shimomura is a great example of someone who actually knows what they're doing.

>bleep bloop chiptune artists and mindlessly epic power rock
>Their music is not fit for a musical intellectual such as myself.
A musical intellectual such as yourself should know that those genres actually correlate to the higher half of the IQ bell curve, not lower. IQ correlates to a preference for higher musical complexity, with generic rock and pop being around the center point, and the genres that you've listed are all of higher musical complexity than generic rock and pop, in descending order.
>what are some lesser known, experimental, and truly unique soundtracks which push the boundaries of video game music?
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles's music, while mostly not compositionally unusual, had a pretty unique sound due to its composer's intentional combination of out-of-fashion instruments from cultures that aren't normally associated with one another.

All music is derivative of something else. What you're asking for is a greater amount of evolution per derivation. That song sounds like a form of Japanese 80s/90s EDM, combined with an old Space Opera soundtrack and a bit of a Prog Rock synth at the 2/3rds mark. The Phantasy Star series has some similar sounds.

It's very much it's own more jazzy yet unique style as expected from ZUNTATA, Tsuchiya likes his bass guitars and expressive incomprehensible vocals. It's more in the vein of Kota Hoshino's output, which makes sense since he used to be part of a band with him. Meanwhile COSIO brings more of an EDM edge to the soundtrack (something OGR would do with Hello 31337). Burst doesn't have quite the consistent feeling to it as Gaiden and G did, but then the Burst games comprise of several albums and composers which would all get compiled for Chronicle Saviours.

It's a kind of soundtrack that works really amazingly for Drakengard's concept of deconstructing the mass murdering RPG experience and the characters capable of the mass murder of an RPG protagonist.
I was expecting as I played through Nier: Automata that the game was actually keeping track of my kills (or of how many Android corpses I was looting…) and that things were going to go pear-shaped just as soon as I had enough blood on my hands; that the Watchers were going to make their presence evident for the Android that could claim enough lives - and that the soundtrack was going to go to hell as that happened.

I liked it and found the soundtrack pretty good myself, but I remember hearing it pissed off Kikuta fans something bad back in the day, what with being a mixed horror/RPG and adopting the horror style "silence aside from sfx and ambiance for exploring" aspect, as opposed to something like Secret of Mana or SD3, which Kikuta also worked on.
Also just a nitpick from a design standpoint, but whoever made that should have alphabetized it, or at least organized it by release date, or something.

Quake 2 & 4 feel like taking games that could be given any other name and do just fine but had quake slapped on top of it for the familiarity and not much else but this happens all the time in vidya so it's not like it matters all that much

I'll have you know that Max Stirner was an anarcho-centrist who would constantly buttblast Marx.
In reality the term "spook" refers to how morality was just a social construct to make sure people were restricted by taboo. (at least that's my interpretation)

There's a lot about Civ games that you can criticize (including the tendency of the last second games to arbitrary include female rulers as glorified token niggers) , but the music usually is good stuff. Geoff Knorr and Michael Curran are quite good at what they are doing.
Even if a cynical person might argue they only do "remixes" of pre-existing masterpieces

Go listen to superman by goldfinger and do japan airs
TBH Sports games always have the best video game soundtracks because they incorporate actual songs that fit the mood moreso than any shitty shooter game music that is just this ambient noise and elevator music or whatever the fuck they got going on in their gameplay and menus.
Even though I love shooters they always have shit tier music unless it's doom. Everything else is really really fucking bad.

I know you aren't looking for anything pretentious but I think this is actually the best song I ever heard in a videogame and relays a real cinema feeling to the intro that is rarely found in games. But we know you aren't into all that "pretentious" shit that tries to sound like movie scores. Obviously the symphony of the night ost is high on the list of good videogame music that actually enhances the ambience of the game as opposed to shooter game music which is just ambience in and of itself.

The goldeneye music is also highly underrated a shame nobody even talks about how good it is. It's on par with Doom in terms of good shooter game music that paces you up.

>>15447554
Not sure why you would even say "on par", Doom's music isn't really that amazing and a ton of its tracks ripped off famous heavy metal motifs. Graeme Norgate is a considerably better composer than Bobby Prince to be quite frank.
d58511 No.15447679
>>15447607
Well it's not really about how quality the music is in particular as much as it enhances the ambience of the game. If you just changed the music goldeneye and doom would both feel like part of the soul of the game was ripped out. Whilst in most games if you just changed the music nobody would know the difference. I think halo might be the only other shooter series that has a soundtrack with a profound "Identity" that doesn't just come off as generic shit.

I have to say good music and ambience goes a really long way when it comes to having an enjoyable or memorable experience with a game. Even a game I don't really like(Halo) the music itself brings back very vivid memories of the game itself. I can't say the same for most games who just get the little intricacies wrong.
Funny how "This is a cinematic experience" meme in game design is mostly antithetical to actually creating that cinematic experience as we already had that going for us it's just the industry turds are too blind to see the forest for the trees.
9861de No.15447792
>>15447764
Yeah i know exactly what you mean. Its sad that these days with budgets that are bigger than ever we also only have generic shit. Most of the time when i notice that its just another "totally epic" orchestral soundtrack i just turn it off and listen to something else.
But i guess that's what happens when the teams making these games are so big that the music composer has no idea where each song is going to be used and thus has to make every song fit the entire game instead of a specific level or area.

Bomberman 64's sequel is great too. Hero's a great game but I always liked 64's action puzzle-ness from a pure gameplay perspective more, plus there's the fact that it's truer to Bomberman's roots.

This. Doom's music is campy because the whole aesthetic of the game is campy. Like Duke Nukem it has a bunch of references to Army of Darkness. It's almost like Blood except without any voice acting, and sci-fi horror themed instead of turn of the 20th century. It's catchy and it has a corny appeal to it.
I liked Doom 64 and I think it did "serious Doom" the best. It has a top-tier ambient soundtrack done by a guy who's an independent artist that specializes in ambient music. The soundtrack's theme seems to be loneliness to me, and constantly made me think about how I'll never find any NPCs to help me fight demons. This is the ideal way to do creepy atmosphere in a Doom game because you're slaughtering demons by the millions, it's not like you can really be afraid of them. Plus it has a really good levelset. Doom 3 is a shitty Half-Life clone with corny atmosphere that falls short of good camp. nuDoom successfully identified camp as the game's roots, the only problem was that the execution was terrible in almost every regard.

I've got a "translation" of City Ruins (Rays of Light) that I've put together today, although I'm rather dissatisfied with a few parts of it…
I've also just put together a "translation" of The Tower, so here's that instead:
The Tower, "translated" to English by this anon:
Peitus lorta star - An impossible tower
Ratu kapyu wa - Its outer walls visible
Teni priktu pyor - A perfect philosophy
Irnri kus vorchia tvoirta - Its concepts at least recitable
No pis isu ra - An idea of grand complexity
Hrisus viktura - Its assumptions understandable
Kenih karta kui - A strange loop
Mei a kwonti kunra chi - In an unknowable tangled hierarchy
Sofeila - It claims to know everything
Nomeia - Except for the answer to one question
Shurkaio - All it asks:
“Do you love her?"
Chukara - All I can do is weep
Furwana - Weep for the unknowability of it
Orlano - She was unknowable
Somarago - I am unknowable
