So, let's assume you're some game dev and your publisher overlords tell you that the audience is tired with the usual system of:

>Slot 1: Knife/Melee

>Slot 2: Pistol

>Slot 3: Shotgun

>Slot 5: Assault Rifle

>Slot 6: Sniper Gun

>Slot 7: Rocket Launcher

>Slot 8: Grenade/Mines/Other Explosive

How exactly would you fill these eight slots? Any remarkable changes you would want to make? Or would you discard the old slot system altogether and move on to the crisp and fresh "you can only carry two different weapons at a time, because fuck you, that's why" ?

I'd use only 3 slots for shotguns

Kinda like Project Brutality/Brutal Doom do

Pump Action, Double Barrel, Automatic and then have 3 types of ammo all of them unique for that certain shotgun until you get a Quad Barrel that can shoot all 9 types of ammo

Up the ante and use a roofing hammer, or maybe have a variety of hammers to choose from, when the player becomes strong enough he can use a sledge hammer with one hand and carry a machine pistol in the other

Keep the foundation but actually throw in some interesting weapon choices.

>Slot 1: Stun baton that only incapacitates

>Slot 2: Gun that propels slippery goo that trips enemies, makes you slide around to move faster

>Slot 3: Minigun type weapon that has to keep firing until it runs out of ammo, can't be swapped out after it starts firing because fuck you.

>Slot 5: Pistol that shoots small rockets that catches on enemies and sends them flying to explode in the air. (Thanks bulletstorm)

>Slot 7: Some kind of lasso gun that reels enemies or objects towards you.

Would probably be a clusterfuck but at least it would be an interesting game for the weapons alone.

>5: Sniper gun can chain shots, so you lock on to a few enemies and fire and the bullet goes on a trip to kill them all, can't fire during the lock-on

>6: Rocket launcher is hard hitting, has a lock-on mode as well, also a free flight you can hook onto to get away and fly around the arena

>7: Grenades: standard explosive, gas grenades which can make enemies turn on each other, time grenade that slows enemies down

>Mines: standard explosive mine, EMP mine that stuns or incapacitates depending on the enemy, switcher mine that swaps you and the enemy who tripped it so put it behind you to prevent flanking

You can combine these things for some crazy shit. Like chucking a time grenade into a group, jumping in and using barefists on them for cool combos. If you get flanked or outnumbered, shoot the free rocket and fly it away to safety.

This is something I wish every FPS had

F.E.A.R was basic as fuck but it worked pretty well, Riddick was hit and miss, sometimes quite literally.

Too bad after FPS became a primarily a console market we've only gotten one button shit instead and nothing else has been explored.

slot 3: Standard semi auto rifle

slot 4: Standard sidearm pistol

slot 5: portal gun

slot 6: rocket launcher, but think rocket launcher that the soldier uses in tf2 (more for mobility and aerial assaults rather than stand back and blow something up)

slot 7: unique ordinance (e.g. black hole grenades, bomb that reverses time in a set area, and something like boomer bile in left 4 dead)

slot 8: gimmick weapon that is functionally useless 90% of the time, but does something fucking awesome the other 10% (think a water pellet gun, which does piss damage but when used to shoot certain enemies makes them go berserk and then nuclear)

This probably isn't balanced at all, but I'd have fun with it.

KINETIC GLOVES

Gloves that manipulate gravity in a 1-foot range. You can catch projectiles like Half Life 2's Gravity Gun and punch demons like in Perfected Doom 3. If you punch the ground, you fly upward. Think of UT's Impact Hammer with a slightly wider and longer melee range.

TAK PISTOL

A gun that looks like the Feral Cutter from Xbox HUEG's "Brute Force", but like a pistol. It would sound like a slingshot gun and fire 3 fletchet rounds per trigger pull. Fires at the same speed as Halo 1's pistol.

SPLITTER RIFLE

Fires a spread of 3 beams that fire outward at 90 degree angles away from the end of a electric emitter (or barrel of a gun) and arc toward targets. Projectiles leave trails that, on contact, do damage. Trails fade slowly. Sounds like a heavy cracking of thunder.

Launches tools like Splinter Cell's crossbow. Same types of tools, as well as explosives as well as a grappling hook. Use tools while equipped with alt-fire.
