Sweet glorious cheats.

>Whatever happened to them? DLC

>Are they as common as they once were?

>What are your favorite cheats?

>What are some cheats you haven't seen but think would be good/funny/fun?

>What are the worst kinds of cheats?

>Do you prefer aesthetic cheats or ones that alter gameplay?

Any and all discussion of cheats and codes, either intentionally implemented or through other means such as gameshark and action replay is welcome.

A lot of these were just jokes/for fun and made either by relatively independent studios or studios without suits breathing down their necks. Now everything has to pass muster with some fag in a suit with no sense of humor.

I remember loving the little brick in Hit & Run. I also remember seeing books dedicated to cheats for specific systems. Did gen 7 have a lot of codes or were they being phased out?

>>15381355

>relatively independent studios or studios without suits breathing down their necks

They used to be very common, look at Konami. They became so common that a lot games gave official cheat menus instead of making you mash buttons on a certain screen. I think it may be that games have become too easy to justify putting them in in the first place. At least that could be why they started to be less common in the first place.

97051b  No.15381492

>>15381379

In addition to >>15381319 I believe it was really achievements that killed cheats. You can't have people compromising the integrity of their meaningless good gamer points with cheats so they just had to go. In the 7th gen some games had them but just like couch multiplayer it became rarer and rarer to see them though some games, as a compromise would just permanently disable achievements in the save. As for the books they were gone half way through the 7th gen. They went from being as thick as dictionaries in the 5th and 6th generation to being thin coupon books that just told you how get achievements and nothing else before being put out of their misery.

Cheats were made for fun, or for stress test, or were just a glitch. The fun ones became dlc. The stress test are usually disabled permanently for plebs and just an annoyance for PC users. And glitch really are not supposed to happen, so they patch it different when games could not be patched. Cheats not intended still do exist if you are a PC user, you just need to change values on RAM…

>What happened to them

<Publisher monkeys screeching their lungs out whenever developers are adding content to the game that can not be directly used to make money.

<Less QA and less downtime for the programmers who otherwise might have used the time to add easter eggs and aforementioned cheats.

<Achievements and achievementwhores who go into autistic howling if someone got the same stuff they have grinded for during a time of twelve hours straight

<Gaming development in general becoming less of a group of autists having some fun, and more of a group of "professionals" with completely unrealistic release dates dictated upon them by the suit monkeys.

<Always online or shoddy seperation between single player and multiplayer modes so that cheats for the former could be abused in the latter.

You're very correct. Achievements were the start. As it stands, one of the few games that has unlockable cheat functions (God of War 3) has a blatant disclaimer that if you use a cheat/alternate costume, the game disabled trophies, and due to the subliminal "pleasure" of that trophy popping up, folks will often not use the code, unless they are a person who's immune to those pop-ups.

Finding a game that allows cheat codes that let you use the cheats AND get the achievements is near impossible. I think only the Lego games allow this and a few movie tie in games.

I really do miss the fun of cheat codes.

0bfa92  No.15383162

I think there's a big difference between stuff like Game Genie, actually editing the game, and having codes done with button presses. But as has been said, the stuff you unlocked from those codes became DLC or just got removed entirely. I'd say part of this is because a lot of genres that used those codes extensively have disappeared, but of course they haven't disappeared entirely, yet the cheats have.

Also, a lot of great glitches in the past weren't fixed in later revisions. Combos in fighting games are a glitch. But nowadays, yeah, they'd probably get removed.

>>15382169

I get why using cheats that make the game easier would disable achievements, but yeah, not being allowed to use costumes or whatever is dumb. That said, those other cheats still add a ton of replay value to a game, even if I'll wait until I get all the achievements to use them. Or hell, put in achievements that you get for doing specific things with certain cheats on.

What achievements really did away with was unlockable content. Why add extra content to the game when you can just give the player meaningless points instead? Then you can sell that content to them as DLC later.

And the best part is that if you don't have those cheats to add replayability, and they are a bad goy and don't shell out for the DLC, then they have less to play, so they'll buy your next game faster!

Speaking of GTA games, GTA Vice City had a major flaw where if you didn't have enough money, you're screwed. Because at about 3/4 of the game, you need to start buying businesses to activate the next mission. I looked at the amount of money I had and went fuck it. I spent some time learning on Cheat Engine and boom $999999999.

I honestly had no idea what the developers were thinking when they made that part into the game.

9de0b4  No.15383590

>>15383566

Yeah but I prefer a quicker solution. Ramming over pedestrians for money will take at least 2 - 3 hours just to accumulate the total amount of cash needed to buy the businesses. Even worse is that the drops are random.

There are also a couple of parking meters you can knock down for money. Or you can do a minigame for even more money, some of which are repeatable. Honestly unless you're really, really bad at the game like when I was when I first played it you won't even have a cash flow problem unless you buy the club first then can't get past the race mission.

>Whatever happened to them?

Honestly I don't think it was DLC. I think it was normalfags with the 'Well if its in the game of course I'll use it' mindset. Like the people who bitch about difficulty settings having an easy one, or other options that just break the game. Maybe I'm bias because it's what I see more of, but if people know theres cheats in a game they automatically use them, get god powers, play 20 minutes, then never pick it up again out of boredom. Because they don't really see it as a fun bonus, just how you're supposed to do it.

That or devs just not really having fun with their own games anymore. Most are just cranked out like any other corporate product, adhering to the industry standards, so there just isn't the room/freedom to allow it anymore. Plus with the internet the charm of them is dead, if you see a code entry option you're immediately looking up the codes instead of trying to find them on your own or using magazines/books to get them.

Basically the atmosphere for them is fucking dead. Faggots made them not fun, industry made them not standard, internet made them not secret.

There's a few niche japanese games that add cheat items as DLC. Dungeon Travelers 2 has double XP and double gold items for sale, and Bullet Girls Phantasia has the cat paw wand and rapier which trivialize the mini-games and half the combat. This is in no way related to the lack of cheats in games though.

9de0b4  No.15383771

>>15383636

I still stand with my criticism. Sure, I could've spent hours upon hours knocking down parking meters and playing minigames. However, I prefer doing those things when I'm not pressured to do them. Like when I'm in between mission and I just want to do other things and take a break from the storyline. When I was at the financial problem, I felt that I had to force myself to knock down people and play the parking lot minigame which is hard(which awards the most money).

Everyone I know did this with GTA III and Vice City, but instead of getting bored and never playing again, eventually they'd get bored of the cheats and actually play the game.

Personally, I don't buy games at launch, but when I do is because I want to glitch the heck of it before it is patched, if CE works, even better! If is done BEFORE the patch it is considered legal. Never got banned in all these years…

Game magazines stopped being a thing, so those stopped being as profitable.
