Depends on the game I guess, I'd wager that playing a half decent video game is still miles better for your brain than watching TV, which is completely passive and full of advertisements. You could argue that playing multiplayer games with a competitive aspect also keeps you actively thinking about outsmarting the other player. It doesn't help you much in real world scenarios but it can't be as damaging as vegging out infront of the advertising box watching reruns of shit you've already seen

The problem is if the person only plays videogames and does absolutely nothing mind stimulating with the rest of his time. Brain is a like a muscle in that it can be trained, but mental abilities will "deteriorate" in time if not stimulated enough.

TV/movies makes people stupider far more than video games, because it's passive entertainment. You just sit there and absorb information, and maybe if it's a mindfuck plot you might actually think about it a little. But for the most part it's consumptive, not productive. Not DOING anything has been proven to lower intelligence and hasten the onset of Alzheimer's and other dementia. Those "brain age" games aren't anything special; playing basically ANY video game keeps the mind sharp. This also has been proven. Doing nothing kills old people faster than cancer; having hobbies (and it matters little what it is) keeps them sharp. There really isn't any solid studies on the type of video game, but I'd wager there's much less of a difference between a casual game and a hardcore game, than there is between a casual game and no game at all.

LCD screen emit very little radiation. But a good rule of thumb, you want to sit at a distance of about half the screens diameter, so if you have a 42 inch screen you should sit at not closer than 21 inches.
I'd be more concerned about the wireless technologies, wifi and bluetooth. Holding a wireless controller close to your crotch is a very bad idea and a sure way to damage your testicles and drop your testosterone levels.
I don't think games will make you stupid but they can certainly lower your attention span, especially the super high intensity ones. But then again, using this website has the same effect. Using message boards is probably a lot more damaging to your health and psychology than playing video games.

I'd imagine it depends on the genre the person is playing. After all some games can keep your mind keen in many ways, but if you just spend all day every day playing the same repetitive Call of Duty matches with the same repeating maps and non-tactical pew-pew nature of Call of Duty then you're probably not going to be the most educated or worldly. Even a game like the older Battlefield's with their larger focus on varied tactics and team coordination offer up more for the mind to think about, though not much more.
