Btw, I was talking about RE1-3 when comparing its gameplay style to Silent Hill's.

I'm aware that RE4 has probably the best combat out of all of these games. But I still don't think it's that good for a horror game.

When playing RE I always feel empowered, something I don't want to feel when playing a horror game.

I dunno. I've never been too scared by zombies but man, those floating ghosts in the SH the room trailer look just like some shit I've seen and I don't want to see again, so SH gets my vote for spooks.

I agree. Silent Hill's monster design is just simply amazing. I doubt any video game monster will ever scare me as much as the twin victim or Pyramid Head.

Resident Evil 4's Regenerators are also worth mentioning though.

Are you serious? RE 1-3,zero and Code Veronica are some of the worst combat in the games, if you have a gun then the combat might work but still, if you only have a crowbar Silent Hill come on top. You can actually kill something with the crowbar unlike the knife in Resident Evil games.

RE4 change a whole lot which made the combat fun, the same with RE5. RE6 was a monstrosity that I could not finish but RE7 was more or less a COD with some puzzles inside a house.

Silent Hill wins when it comes to quality. First 3 SH games are still better horror experiences than anything Capcom has ever produced.

But, Resident Evil wins when it comes to quantity. After Team Silent disbanded after SH4, SH games started becoming average and few and far between. After Resident Evil 4 was released however, Capcom began and is still producing a steady stream of new RE titles. RE2make being their latest effort, which I'll definitely check out.

Post-SH4 and post-RE4 games are average quality horror experiences imo. But personally, I do enjoy post-RE4 Resident Evils more than I like post-SH4 Silent Hills.

I think for the time Resident Evil 2 had some really decent combat. You had a lot of weapon variety and such. But yeah, I also think this style of combat is not very precise or engaging and more frustrating. Which suits a game like Silent Hill more than an action title like Resident Evil imo.

I agree. As I stated in my first post, I only wanted to focus on the first 4 Silent Hill titles since everything after that wasn't even produced by the main developers. To me, saying that Silent Hill Homecoming, Downpour ect are part of the Silent Hill Main series is like saying the CDI Zelda games are part of Zelda's main line.

As an ongoing series Resident Evil is better overall. Resi has a lot of retardation and shark jumping but the series has this unbroken continuity even if they are out of ideas and turned it into LOST of videogames.

Silent Hill one through four are amazing action adventure horror classics. The horror comes mainly from the atmosphere which Resi could never do for me. The puzzles are also great and made me scratch my head a lot of times and some still do to this day.

Now if we take SH as a series, with everything that came out, it is worse than Resi. Pretty much all the titles after 4 are either fan fiction tier (even if the game itself is decent) or plain bad. I will not even go into how the continuity and lore got butchered and raped.

Basically Resi is like Freddy/Jason/Saw series: started off serious and progressed into absurdity while keeping the continuity and sometimes even shaking the formula a bit.

Silent Hill is akin to a great movie getting a Spanish or Italian semi-bootleg sequel just to sell money: none of the original charm or creators are there and it's sole reason for existence is to make dosh on the stupid fanboys. Like how I bought HDTF

I don't think anything fucked with my head quite like the Silent Hill games, both series are sort of ruined by fans but I try to ignore all that.

I mean, like the survival horror games like RE and Silent hill you learn that sometimes it's just easier to tun away and save ammo for a boss fight or whatever.

But if you really needed to defend yourself, in RE you almost had to pull out the gun and shoot, in SH you did not need to pull out the gun, you where fine with the knife in SH only some enemies you just ran away from or pulled out the gun but generally you could actually defend yourself with the kitchen knife.

Even the controls in SH1 are up to standards today, it's kinda surreal how good the controls really are.

Also the most action-like RE when it comes to RE 1-3 it's 3, nr 2 is perfect balance of puzzles and action.

The only bad RE game is RE 5 and that one can be salvaged somewhat by the fun gameplay and by coop.

There hasn't been a truly bad mainline RE game and some pretty good off-shoot games.

RE5 is a watered down RE4 but it at least has focus and the level design works in favour of the gameplay and mechanics.

RE6 is broken with none of the games mechanics given a moment to shine and instead you get bullshit stealth sequences like in Jake's campaign. Not to mention the plot is completely retarded and none of the other campaign's outside of Leon's really give any further insight. RE6 was so bad lore wise which is why they almost rebooted the universe.

Eternal Darkness was a fantastic game but it never really felt 'scary' to me. The mansion level in Time Splitters Future Perfect seemed genuinely scarier than anything I remember in eternal darkness.

Silent Hill is more frightening.

Resident Evil is more fun.

That's remained pretty consistent.

The mercs multiplayer maps show off how good the game mechanics can be in an open environment but in the campaign it's all shitty corridors.

Get used to it or fix your inner ear or something. It is just like carsickness or seasickness - you need to be persistent and you will overcome it!

Resident Evil is fun even after a dozen playthroughs because you still can find ways to optimize your route/inventory management to get guder. Silent Hill is laughably easy and while it may have things like side stepping and backhopping, the unlimited inventory and non-threatening enemies coupled with hard hitting melee weapons make it an absolute joke in comparison.

Both are great games but anyone claiming Silent Hill is more fun from a gameplay perspective must have been dazzled by the story and never bothered to replay it.

Though I will admit the puzzles are superior in Silent Hill.

You can do it through emulator but it can be really unstable. I play through a modded ps2 and it is pretty tight.

Emulating an HDD for faster load times. You install games to the virtual HDD which also means you don't need to select the ISO to play. You instead run the OPL.elf file like you would on a softmodded PS2. Please note the HDD file will take up 15GB since that is the space required for both Outbreak games.

Silent Hill always had shitty level design, and seemed to fundamentally misunderstand what makes survival horror work in a few areas. You aren't supposed to give the player melee attacks that are good enough to rely on as anything more than a last resort.

they are different genres, resident evil is zombies while silent hill is paranormal. they are both great games.

Worst thing about Resi7 is how shit the monster designs are. Regular Zombies are scarier compared to the Mold.
