Me too but I dont think tomb raider is a survival game. It has a tiny bit of it left over at the start of the game with you hunting and setting up camp but it quickly gets dropped right after. Probably a remnant of when it was supposed to be more of a horror game

Well, that´s an inherent problem for the horror genre itself. If a horror game is too effective in creating horror than people will stop playing it. For example, I once read that only 3% of buyers completed the first Dead Space which was the main reason why the following games went more into the direction of action than horror.

That's weird. I finished DS1 because the setting was interesting and I wanted to know more about the necromorphs, which stayed interesting until the giant anus worm or whatever at the end. Other than one or two setpieces it hardly felt like a horror game at all.
Compare that to Darkwood where the feeling of dread absolutely never lifts and every decision you make feels like you irreparably fucked yourself over.

I think it definitely had it´s fair share of spoopy moments, especially in the levels where you have to run away from the regenerator and the sound design in general was top notch. The later levels were mostly shooting galeries though, which kinda took away the scary factor from the necromorphs.

It died down because everyone was trying to copy DayZ and Minecraft and didn't bother experimenting. The market simply became too saturated. To this day I haven't played a single "survival" game that was fun. A good survival game would for example be one based on score where the player tries to survive in a desolate, post-apocalyptic wasteland ala fallout. In game you have to manage your thin resources to not die from starvation or thirst and only rarely would you find something resembling civilization like a roadside motel or a cave. Also it would be real time time cycle and your character would be weak as shit, to enforce the ""survival"" part. This is my ideafagging, something like this.

Almost none I've played were actually about "surviving" after the first hour. Item scarcity was gone, you were in no immediate danger of any sort, and the game turned into a grindfest of "craft X so you can craft Y so you can craft Z so you farm shit 5% more effectively". I think the best one I've played yet was STALKER modded with Misery, since there the scarcity phase lasted over 5 hours (a good chunk was me not knowing what I was doing, though).
Really, the issue with these games is that they don't realise that they should keep the player in the hobo phase, rather than let him turtle up in his little makeshift shitting hole where he'll get farming started, prepare defenses, etc.

Survival suffers from not having any real goal. You can survive as long as you can, you can try to get better at surviving whatever the game throws at you, but that alone doesn't constitute an end-game.
So you can intro-game and mid-game, but there really is no end, and so it gets stale. Look at any of the zombie survival games, some you have to just survive endless waves of zombies, some you have to contend with other players, but can you WIN? or get a high score by surviving longer? Each and every one of them is a war of attrition scenario, where nobody wins, you just keep playing until you can no longer, which after the 3rd or 4th survival game you realize there's no novelty left. It's more of a time waster than tetris since that at least has a scoring system.
That said, I still play survival games once in a while, but it's a sparse indulgence.

Naw that's the game. The problem with it is it's just empty and nothing to do except build, which is fine if it actually meant anything. >not having any real goal
That's it exactly. For example: Subnautica vs Project Zomboid. Subnautica gives you an end goal immediately (get off the planet) and every milestone along the way unlocks new areas and new gameplay options as you work towards that goal. Good game.
Project Zomboid has a huge map, very detailed gameplay mechanics (practically simulation-level in a few respects) and a great atmosphere. But there's no end-game at all–the game literally tells you when you start the game that "THIS IS HOW YOU DIED," which basically means "we were too lazy to program in a win-state." Sure, it feels good to get supplies, build a base and settle in, but then what? What reason do you have to not just quit the game right there, knowing that you've basically "won" by ensuring long-term survival?
Fuck, at least tell me "you can escape if you survive x amount of time." Then even if I'm bored to tears sitting in my barricaded house eating canned beans I can feel like I'm getting closer to winning. And if you can't win, what's the point?

The problem with Empyrion is that the few good things it does are locked behind boring shit.
The vehicle construction is pretty nice and all, as well as base building. However mining ore for resources is fucking horrible, time consuming and boring.
Water is collected by putting a pump near water, why can't ore be harvested in the same manner so I can go do something fun instead of standing in the same spot staring at the same grey texture?
I think they have an ore miner like that but it's late-game tech and only works in certain veins from what I recall.
Furthermore, the invasions are fucking trash. I get the "ebin hardgore ::DD" meme but it's terrible game design. It's just hovering robots with different weapons, increasing in number and power for difficulty. No ground troops to mess with you or fall in traps or anything, just robots that ignore the terrain to shoot you from vantage points.
They also have no clear objective, so even when they kill you they'll stick around shooting your base until there isn't a single block up and stay around after that.
How you usually do these "invasions" is have a target block inside your base that they'll try to reach and destroy, like it's core. The second it's gone, they fuck off and you lost, they don't stick around to destroy everything else nor do they do so in the process for funsies.
You also don't have them constantly raiding you even when you die, that just forces you to either make corpse runs for your gear or have extra stuff inside your base and a saferoom with your spawn location to gear up before shooting them.
They were also a massive dump of ammo and thus non-renewable resources with little or no reward for fighting off.
The ridiculous thing about Empyrion is that you're better off making vehicles to go around the world and keep your base the smallest possible, strictly for the crafting stations you'll need before you can offload everything to a capital ship or space station.
Invasions end up feeling like a punishment for trying to set up a base when they should be a reward to some degree.

A concrete goal would be good enough, The Forest has this for instance.
But honestly, there wouldn't be any problem to have an endless game as long as the world itself was more reactive and alive. A lot of survival games don't really include NPCs or factions that roam the world and change it like you do, creating stories with their interactions. Usually devs "offload" this to players in multiplayer but this is an incredibly shitty way to do it and the closest we got to what I'm asking was Age of Conan with the NPCs being recruited to man your stations. And even then, they are just furniture.

NEO Scavenger is pretty good at keeping the hobo phase extended for a good long while. Hell, you'd be considered a lucky bastard to die wearing a matching pair of shoes that fit both feet. The game is only fun at the beginning. After you get something decent going, getting more meat from hunting than you can hope to eat and getting so much clothes that cold stops being a factor (both of which are easy to achieve quite quickly if you know what you're doing), you realise the game sucks balls.
