Back when asymmetrical games were becoming a meme before battle royale usurped it as the next dev fad a big thing was 'serial killer sims' like Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th.

Lots of others died but one just went dark for a while called 'Last Year'. It was meant to be more like Obscure i.e a sci-fi rather than supernatural love letter to late 90's horror movies. You play a serial killer or monster against a gang of high school students playing the role of Jock, Nerd, Goth and so on.

It was meant to be a little more tongue in cheek and experimental rather than 1v4 'do the one thing on repeat' like all the others. It had a kickstarter but they actually shut it down stating a company had shown interest in publishing and that was that. Last i saw they confirmed it was set around a prom near halloween at a midwestern high school in 1999, the 'last year' of the 20th century.

Does anyone know what happened to it? i really loved Obscures style of 90's horror movie inspiration and while games like Until Dawn tried it they went far too serious with it.

What happened was Streamers influence getting carried by generation-z.

Streaming is the new cool for the kiddies as YouTube is becoming TV 2.0

These games, Fortnite, Friday the thirteenth, are all carried in sales by streamers.

Which is why they fizzle out so quickly.

I'm Sorry your 90's horror games had to suffer through that.

As far as I recall, Last Year predated all the 1v4 slasher meme games. I remember being hype as hell for it and then they just fucked off and Dead By Daylight cucked them hard.

I was curious about them a few months ago so I did some digging. Their last gameplay video showed off killers using the retarded Jason teleporting of F13 and there were huge, goofy traps that survivors could deploy. It seems like they really don't know what they are doing and just managed to have a novel idea before broadcasting it to others that had more resources and drive.

Kind of a shame.
