Lately I've been having fun by limiting myself in games in some themed way. Do you do anything like this?

I'm currently doing a Mount and Blade campaign where I only use companions and no normal units. I started out doing nothing but trading and building enterprises so I could equip everyone with chargers and plate armor. It's going pretty well, although I still can't really kill anything more than a moderate-large sized bandit army.

Using sub-par units in Mount and Blade is also fun, since it forces you to learn how they work and force their niche to work. Vagina archers for example, since they're by far the worst units in the game.

In Shogun 2 FOTS I did an artillery only game which is fun because every battle is all or nothing. If they reach your guns you lose your entire army, but if they don't they lose theirs. Gets old after you get decent guns with accuracy buffs, though.

Most games nowadays are so easy and streamlined that you have to do stuff like that to have some kind of challenge.

I don't like it because I think it's pointless when I could just cheat here and there and the game would continue anyways. Unless it's permanent shit like level 1 runs. Even so, I still don't find enjoyment in it, it's hard to explain exactly why, I think it's like trying to eat soup with a fork for fun.

This. The most fun for me is when a game is really hard and I get to figure out and abuse every tool the game gives me in order to get an advantage over the mechanics.

An exception is when you're rewarded for doing a challenge run. In Dark Souls 1 and 3 (never played enough 2 to know if it mattered) it's pretty fun to create twinked characters. I'd argue that it's even more of a challenge in 3 since you can get such a big advantage by collecting all the estus flasks upgrades which forces you really far into the game. Some of the rings like Prisoner's Chain (which scales very good for low SL characters) are also a big challenge to acquire.

Of course you can use a password summon to help you out but then you might as well not play Dark Souls to begin with.

Diablo 2, Assassain, Hardcore, Non-Ladder. Tough Guy Run: No leveling until an act ends, can ONLY level skills, all stats from gear. I'm level 25 now.

I usually like challenge runs that are designed to be in the game, or a separate mode. For example, Heaven or Hell in DMC or the KMS run in God Hand.

Self-imposed challenges like LLNIIENACMO in FFVII are purely autismal.

Did a Hard Mode (Japanese Maniac Mode) no-deaths FE:RD playthrough just yesterday. For those who don't know - it removes the weapon triangle, you can't check enemy range, all bonus experience is halved and enemies get stronger.

Highlights include Micaiah not getting any speed even with Paragon (x2 EXP skill), Zihark and Nolan carrying Dawn Brigade chapters with their double Earth support (+45 evade just for being in 3 range of eachother), Haar single-handedly slaughtering half the game and then getting behind on speed for the final chapters, Nolan capping every stat on third tier without BEXP by around level 14 aside from HP and STR and Sanaki getting a grand total of 5 stat up items to abuse Nosferatu on red dragons and double the final boss with +5 speed from White Pool.

I assume you savescummed? There's no shame in that considering how a single bad RNG roll can end your entire run. It's not a very good game in that regard, and I say that as someone who sat through even FE4, probably one of the worst offenders.

Never savescummed for the levels, but I did reset when someone died. To give you an idea of what the run was like, the final team to go into the tower was this:

Ike, Sothe, Micaiah, Ena, Kurth, Sanaki are required

Zihark, Nolan, Shinon, Soren, Nephenee, Elincia, Haar, Titania, Tibarn, Giffca, Leanne

Giffca was taken instead of Caineghis because if you put a Speedwing on him he doubles the final boss without White Pool.

I played through the first Dishonored on without using any abilities or killing anyone. I accidentally fell onto some woman and she died, but I didn't realize until the end screen where "Kills: (1)" showed up Holy fucking shit was that game designed around killing people and using Blink, which is annoying, because you have to not kill people to get the good endings. It was a generally miserable experience, but I got through it. Why do stealth games always give you two options for non-lethal and a hundred tools and weapons for killing people?

I've beaten Persona 3/4 using only Orpheus/Izanagi, and I intend to do the same with P5 once I can find a single fuck to give.

P3P/P4 are still easy modo thanks to skill cards, but P3 requires a decent grasp of fusion and a ton of patience. Also a ton of grinding.

I tried to do it in The Answer but it ended up being an insurmountable wall of fusion autism.

>Why do stealth games always give you two options for non-lethal and a hundred tools and weapons for killing people?

The bigger problem is that the non-lethal alternatives are often implemented in the most lazy way possible.

Having a tranquil gun and a tazer that function pretty much identical to a gun and melee weapon, with the in-universe difference of one being lethal and one knocking the enemy out is boring and doesn't add anything to the game. It only serves to arbitrary limit your options as you rightfully pointed out, all for the sake of cheap replayability with minimal effort put in from the developer where the only major difference is a cutscene at the end of the game.

Either you choose the path of killing your enemies with a choice of 15 weapons, or you choose the path of "killing" your enemies with a choice of 2 weapons.

The worst part is, there's basically no difference between a KO'd and dead enemy most of the time. Enemies will find a guy out cold, go "Oh shit nigger, he's fucked" and leave him there as if he was just a corpse. The non-lethal route should be harder due to this, enemies struggling and making noise while you choke them out and similar things, not because you have only two buttons to play with and the levels weren't intended for it, while the guy playing lethal has a hundred different tools to deal with every situation instead.

Yeah that's what I meant with my use of quotation marks

<or you choose the path of "killing" your enemies with a choice of 2 weapons.

It feels like they just tack on non-lethal as a quick way of doubling the games length by having it as an incentive to replay the game with minimal coding effort.

RPG's seem to handle replay value the best in my experience. My top tier contender for this would be Gothic 2 with all factions being logical choices to join with none of them being "evil" or "good". The 3 also change up the gameplay and story enough to warrant playing all of them.

Then there's the whole "good" and "evil" style games like KotOR and Fable, they too offer good replay value with the different abilities, character interactions and outcome.

d57bda  No.15318052

I think Invisible, Inc. Handles this pretty well; knocked out enemies eventually wake up (though you can delay that by standing on top of their tile) whereas a killed enemy doesn't get back up, but they instead advance the alarm stage of the level much quicker.

This provides an incentive to go quiet to avoid the unnecessary risk, but also the incentive to one-and-done the guards so your agents don't have to waste time dragging the body around to keep them from waking up (or worse, letting them wake up, initiating a caution state and shaking up patrol routes.

This. It's the bane of stealth games, because the tools are always too overpowered so you're forced to do a shitty ghost run, because the games a fucking breeze otherwise. Knowing at any moment you can annihilate everyone. Even Thief has this problem, because of a blackjack exploit.

>Lately I've been having fun by limiting myself in games in some themed way. Do you do anything like this?

I used to really fucking like Inazuma Eleven when it was JAP only, but since the game was really easy I came up with a few challenge runs and all in all finished the game about ten times over. It's just too bad that the series never fully explored its possibilities after the second game. Highlights include:

>starters only game

>random shmucks recruited game

>rebuilding a different, weaker team and winning the whole game with it (using cheats to unlock them early)

>least number of hissatsu runs

>off position players run

The only thing I never tried is an actual speedrun, because sports games against the clock can't work well with it. If I found some game breaking glitch about it I'd probably do one.

Gothic 2 with the DLC was the best shit. Base game was pretty normal, but I swear the DLC must have rebalanced it or something, because it turned the difficulty to 11. I still remember sneaking around the woods, avoiding orcs and looking for some wolf to kill or something to get a bit more XP.

Of course, when you actually start doing the DLC content (it's a separate map), you will very quickly find yourself ridiculously OP thanks to all the buffs the DLC hands you, so I recommend only doing it as late as possible to maintain the challenge.
