Rather than the grass, which is the least of the concerns there, it's the wood on the left, and the rocky textures in front of Spyro which replaced the grass. It's clear at a glance in the original the two short towers on the side and that the opening is nice and clear to glide between them. The graphical clutter (in this case, too much shit going on and basically distracting you from what's important), alongside the lighting drowning everything out makes that not as easy to see. It's small shit like that that ruins these games.

I've stated this once before about graphical clutter in Yooka Laylee. Most of the promotional art had jungle/forest backgrounds. If you put Yooka and Laylee to the side and not the middle of the picture, you would not immediately see them, because of how much shit is going on.

Honestly the first looks looked way worse. They fixed a lot of what was wrong at first, and the most notable change I've seen, Sheila, has surprised me and actually made me like the change more than the original. I also like the nighttime Glimmer that that other anon was talking about, though I don't know if I'd say I like it better than the original.

Ultimately, it barely matters. The only reason to buy a remake isn't even to play it. I could play the originals and the entire point is that the remake will play like the originals. The real point is just voting with your wallet in the hopes they'll make actual sequels after the success of a remake. Of course this is also bullshit since that's what they should be doing right away instead of doing a ripoff remake in the first place. But the point remains that the only reason to even complain about things in the remake is so that they can hopefully get it more right in the sequel if the remake does well.

First of all, you exaggerate vastly when you say it's so bad. The nighttime version of Glimmer that some anons were talking about earlier in the thread looks cool. I agree that some of the other minor characters look weird, but Sheila actually looks better, which is not something I had expected them to manage to pull off.

Secondly, yeah they might think they're actually better. This is the same team that did Skylanders, after all. There's a clash in the nu-Spyro artstyle between the characters and the backgrounds, since the geometry is integral to the gameplay, things like rooftops that would pass as background scenery in some games are more platforms in Spyro, which necessitates that they change as little as possible about the set pieces in order to keep it a 1:1 copy of the original levels.

I already played first two back in the day and could play the 3rd on an emulator any day. I really don't get the appeal of these remakes. I mean, if it's targeted towards kids born in the 00s and 10s then sure it's nice I guess but I just don't get why 30yo boomers get excited about games they've already played to death.

Regardless, making the side character look visually different and not like simple color swaps is a good decision. it makes them feel different and look more fun and visually distinct.

I like the new designs for the waifus and eagerly await the porn. Everything else looks like shit though. Too much contrast and detail for the sake of it, cluttering the screen with noise. The lighting is the worst part. The beautiful dreamlike lighting of the original has given way to very boring lighting + LOL ultra hard shadows. And most of the monster and character designs even the waifus but I'll give them a pass look like generic dreamworks shit now.

With Moneybags, it's a matter of his looks helping to portray what kind of character he is. The old design portrayed him as a cartoonish entrepreneur like Scrooge McDuck or the Monopoly guy. Smooth, surreal, and purple mountains over craggy mountains. With some areas of the world looking carved and manmade. Where the original had a mystical and otherworldly vibe, the remake changes it to be a more mundane mountain level.

I'm not asking for a simple port of the original to HD (though I would prefer that over what we're getting), but half of these issues would work perfectly fine in HD and wouldn't need to be changed. Refer to the third image in >>15351463. All the changes to the stone are completely pointless and would've been just fine adapted faithfully to HD.

Your argument is that if they adapted the art style as it is straight to a newer system it wouldn't work, and my counter argument would be they should've done more research and planning into how to actually adapt the art style faithfully to it, and not simply axe things that don't work naturally. For example, a lot of the big issues with the remake stem from lightning and overuse of Bloom effects (particularly heinous in the Beast Maker's world), and these issues are similar to the ones in Abe's Oddyssey. I think they should've experiment with more muted lighting effects to try and replicate the look of the original, which simply used environmental textures and baked lighting to convey it as opposed to the standard lighting effects used today.

But that's just for the larger ones, for other issues like character designs, there's no excuse for most of them. The gnocs shouldn't be overly detailed and grotesque, the guns should be in, they shouldn't need to throw clothing on 99% of characters, and the egg thieves don't need to be turned into fucking black people.

Well for one, the original Spyro, while cartoony, wasn't cartoony in the same way the latter Spyro games were. There weren't UFOs, or robots, or other stuff. You know, I find it funny developers are starting to realize the only way they are going to make money is reskinning and adding onto old games. I don’t mind this phase we are going through so long as they do a decent job (this looks to be and okay example with DaS remastered being a bad example).

I’ve actually had quite a bit to play this year and looks like I’ll be well off going into next with DMC5 and DOOM Eternal, not to mention Nintendo’s Rom scare finally getting me to download old shit and finally knock some stuff off the back log like the NES Mega Mans and Castlevanias. The environments are terrible, but the character models are good on the whole (or at least the SHAPE, not so much the texture). See, that's the part where I think they messed up with the whole "remake" aspect. Obviously the character models were extremely limited because of the limitation on polygons, but the environments were not so much (as much of it was flat to begin with, being a background). There was no need to change how those looked, so it seems they changed them just for the sake of changing them. Of course, because the art direction was inferior to the original, the end result ended up inferior.

I like how Spyro looks and moves (aside from it being doglike, but what can you do?), but there's still something "off" about him. His original appearance was kinda gangly and scrawny, which is very appropriate for what is supposed to be a pubescent dragon. In this case the limited-polygon aesthetic works very well (as opposed to Elora, who looks horrifying in the original). But the new model is just too… round and cute, rather than an awkward teenager. Like the way he's now wider in the hips and has a more rounded chest/belly. Looks like a MINIATURE dragon instead of an YOUNG dragon, if you get my meaning.

Instead of using a larger disk, they're most likely optimizing it (and finishing it, too, seems unpolished as fuck in terms of performance). That, and games usually get burned 6-8 weeks before launch, so that they would have time to send them to stores all around the world. Think about all the the reviewers that get copies two-ish weeks early, as well. Wasn't the original launch in Septermber? It was just about time for them to start burning copies when they got called out for being shit.

At some point in development, they realised only Spyro 1 would be polished and bug-tested before the deadline, with 2 and 3 needing a few extra weeks. Thus, they planned to "go gold" with just Spyro 1, dropping to a lower-capacity disc to save money, and then finish up 2 and 3 while the discs were being printed and shipped.

By delaying the game, they can finish 2 and 3 and put it all on one high-capacity disc, the way it should've been done in the first place.

The hitboxes aren't perfect but close. The people complaining are just shitters. The originals are my favorite games of all time and I've beaten them a million times. There are only a couple jumps where the hitboxes are even close to noticeable. The only major time anyone would actually notice is if they're trying to cheat on the bridge levels in Crash 1 by walking on the ropes. It's still doable but much harder.

Generally, everything in the game is just a tiny bit off. It's almost unnoticeable, but it is enough that I would say the original is better in every way, but only a little bit. That said, playable Coco and all the extra Relics are nice. The relics especially would make me play the remakes. And there are the two new levels, but they're DLC. Even if free, DLC is a shit practice since once the servers go down those levels will disappear.

Ratchet's problem wasn't the artstyle, and it had nothing to do with Disney/Pixar style. Tools of Destruction already nailed the Pixar style anyway. The Ratchet remake's problem was that they cut a bunch of the best levels from the original game, mostly ones that had more varied platforming, and replaced them with hallway shooter levels, because Insomniac always only wanted to make boring ass generic shooters, and they only made good games like Spyro and Ratchet because it made them more money in the '90s and they built their name off of that.

Crash remake is pretty good, on pc the community is starting to mod it, so far I've seen a mod that moves the red gem back down so you can get it by slidespin jumping off the arrow box, and some guy is trying to unfuck the issues with collision.

Also as far as the ratchet remake goes it's fucked because they cut half the game, and apparently it's put into the movie instead, and for whatever reason they skimped putting the original on the disk like they were originally planning. For the few issues the Vita/Ps3 ports have, I'd recommend getting the trilogy there.

There's a lot more to it than that, the development of the ratchet remake came after a lot of disinfo about the relationship between ratchet and clank in the first game. The team had hired hollywood writers during the development of the PS3 games and these writers weren't particularly good. The first Ratchet game still has the best writing but the remake was created with the goal of retconning how the duo came to be and the game itself is a bad mix of a new story, the original story, and the film's story. It was just a mess from the start.

Something tells me these hollywood writers are the origin of the meme that the first game doesn't have a good story.
