If you have to do one or the other, I'd personally recommend playing, if you have the time and patience, and the VODS if you don't. vanilla is a dumpster fire of game design. If you play vanilla, make sure you play duet, you can still get all the normal endings in duet and the xp curve has been fixed.

Fuck me it's been a long time since I've seen Duet. It really is great seeing it again fresh. Coda is just so, so clumsy in comparison. It was always Alto who needed to be the protagonist - pushing Teagan into that role was a mistake.
Duet is pretty special, but it always felt like I was just riding on the top of the wave. Like all I had to do was just disconnect some little part and let things roll along, rather than setting up a big contrivance to make Teagan the hero. Or maybe Teagan and Alto just end up being such a mess after that point in canon that anything after that was always going to feel warped? I don't know.
I do think feralphoenix is a pretty talented writer. She ended up making some real mistakes - I guess we all do - but everything that makes Alto and Teagan great comes from her. It was kind of surprising how effective the music was, even just license free midi tracks from japanese tumblr. She's got an ear for that.
I don't know what the hell's going to come next. I wish there was more I could do. It's been so long, the nuclear scene made me cry all over again.

Alto's uncommon time is the climactic peak of the game. The base game has messed up pacing in general, but her UT has the heaviest intentional moments no matter what version you played. There is no substantial main content that remains after clearing it, except for Teagan's apology. The only thing I think could be done is redoing Metronome Tower so that it properly shows how far the party has come. Show a post-duet Alto and Teagan rough things out. Show Aubrey reinvigorated to make this life matter. Show how Saki and Meirin love what they have and don't want to lose it. Show how they've collectively become a group of friends who remind each other of what matters, who together are capable and willing for this ultimate challenge and for a world to come afterwards, and all that cheesy feelgood shonen crap.
As it is, a little cutscene skip really does solve it. Alto's arc ends after her uncommon time. The rest is lore and fluff that doesn't cling. I feel like you could restructure the other uncommon times into happening before Alto's, so you could have hers at the end. But at that point, we'd be looking at an entirely different story.

A change to the final boss, having Saki/Meirin have their own Uncommon Times and having Arietta have her character arc when Alto arrives rather than being ready and perfect beforehand would make act 3 less pointless. Alto's Uncommon Time definitely is the turning point of the whole game - or at least the moment when she decides that she doesn't trust anyone enough to let them come with her. That's the moment that she loses her chance for a true happy ending, which is why Duet had to bypass it.
Act 3 should have Alto being the light that helps her friends. Saki says things like that in canon but it certainly isn't convincing.

Bravura mentions an altar metaphorically in some of her speech in Duet, and it weighs on her mind. The magic book relates to her 'indolent' reading time, although there's a specific pattern to the symbols in it and which ones are burned. As for the hair - well, she has so much of it that it wraps around her and cuts her off from others literally as well as metaphorically. The idea was for it to be more abstract than other uncommon times due to Bravura being a spirit and Teagan not having a guide through it (or even knowing Bravura particularly well at that point).Bravura already defeated her own RIBS that would have appeared.

Teagan's speech about her brother is probably the one part of Duet that I'd adjust. Teagan puts herself in the best light and her sisterly love is the most part of her motivation (or else the situation wouldn't also apply to Alto) but there are a couple of things that feral mentioned on her blog that add a bit more to it. She mentioned the idea that Teagan didn't really know - or didn't understand - what her brother wanted to do until he went off to do it (she was preoccupied with worrying about Alto by then), so she ended up taking is as a personal betrayal since he obviously knew she was asexual.
I like that angle, and it kind of plays into an aspect of Pittura Infamante that I liked about Tristan intentionally playing on her sex-aversion. It definitely is a bit more complicated than Teagan just being afraid for her brother like in Duet, or Teagan just being a big asexual meanie who won't let him have fun like it comes across in the original game. It's a complex thing and I think it's a shame when it gets simplified.
I'm not seriously planning to make any changes to Duet aside from fixing a couple of typos, but that's something that I think about.

same here, but I only booked myself monday and tuesday, because Thassil's first schedule was to be done with everything in 2-3 days.
Which, as it turned out, was a fools endeavor, because there is just too much stuff to finish it all in 3 days.

We need to ask ourselves; how did Thassil get this picture? It was so quick, like 5-10 minutes. I can't remember how long it took, but it's not important. What matters is the speed for it to be made. It was colored in, after all.
So what does this mean? Well, one may argue that Thassil has a quick friend who draws fast. One could argue Thassil was the artist of it. But either way, this proves an important point: Thassil has some connection to MLP art.
But what does it mean, you ask? In response, I say we have to ask ourselves another question; "Why does Thassil have this connection either way?" Well, that can be chalked up to one of two things.

This game is something of an oddity, there is a sea of Visual Novels made in Ren'py, and RPGmaker games out there and the vast majority of them are forgettable nonsense. But this game has struck a chord with this ever growing crew of anonymous individuals and we've elevated to a pedastal and created a small but dedicated following. I'm serious when I say this is the year I'll actually play this game to fully understand this bizarre story and the characters within.
Not sure what the full drama is right now, this year seems the busiest we've had the threads, what with the stickies and Mark. Saki doesn't use falsetto since he isn't using his trap look to get attention from "heterosexuals". He looks like a trap, but rather than being from trap culture he's at the intersection where gay drag culture meets 'bishounen' anime pretty-boy style. He acts a effeminately because he's camp but he'd be doing that even if his body matched his ideal and he could be attractive the way he'd prefer to be - as a burly Boy♂Next♂Door.
Basically, he's too gay to fake a high-pitched voice. Watching a clip of the anime feral mentioned the voice seems about right, he just needs to be able to hit the right amount of camp for "My my ~" "Ara ara ~".
Pretty much every videogame with gay characters ends up with either them being tokenistically gay and it not really mattering, or the fact that they're gay being the only thing that matters and not having a personality outside of it (with the whole plot normally revolving around how awful it is to be homosexual in a 21st-century western nation). Saki's unusual because he's really fucking gay and it affects the way he expresses himself and does things, but it isn't everything about him. It's a shame he doesn't get his own Uncommon Time and get his story told in a clean way, because I think if that happened people would really like him.

It's never stated outright, but she is affected by the fact that she is half-fairy. Ever since she was a child she had to deal with comments that she isn't human (because she isn't), even in comments where she is in fact being praised for her supernatural abilities. When Altair states "Huh, I guess you really are human" (or something like that), she breaks down crying. This seems to be the only thing she has a real emotional response to something.
To put this in a more justifiable manner; she hates the world because she doesn't fit in anywhere except for at the head of her group of researchers, whom are the greatest mages in the world, but SHHHH FP needs her protags to be angsty.

Arietta isn't quite as fucked-up as Alto is. She ends up with good friends, but even Alto managed to find people who cared about her and wanted to be her friends (even though she ends up distrusting them and using them in canon). Arietta's inner conflict comes from not wanting to save a word where fairy rape wars continue to happen and she feels it particularly because her heritage is tied to war and atrocity. Part of her motivation is down to wanting to show up the people who shunned her and put her down but it's important that she found good people to give her a better reason to want to do the World Tuning.
I think it makes a difference that Arietta unfucked herself in Uncommon Time before she selected her ensemble, otherwise she might have done the same thing that Alto did and found people with the same wish for annihilation.
My autistic headcanon is that Arietta would have succeeded at the World Tuning with only two people if she'd composed it as a viola/organ duet and performed it with Altair.

Most of the work was making fun of how some random retard could do 10 minutes worth of work in photoshop and ruby and come up with something at least slightly more presentable than Uncommon Time. I started it during the first handful of threads and came up with a bunch of cahracters and wrote stories for them, used a bunch of premade scripts to try to make the battle system more interesting, as well as the actual stock JRPG square by square movement, without changing it drastically.
I accomplished my goals and ended up with a handful of neat, though short, chunks of the game, but never put it together. When Duetanon made his stuff, I realized he did a much better job in the vein of the actual threads than I could ever try to do, mostly because I just stopped giving a damn after a while.
In short, he released me from the hell I had enclosed myself in, and now I am free. So now you may take this and forget me, for I was never a part of this outside of making fun of the stock graphics and shit use of the battle systems in RPGMaker.

Absolutely. The battle system in stock RPGM is bland, but I don't call it a flaw as is. It's that nobody bothered to make it something different within it's own flavor, I guess. In UT the fact that yet again somebody thought it was a great idea to make inanely spongy enemies and coupled that with a boring set of spells with nothing but damage effects at best (aside from I think a handful of spells), and then the whole of the storyline in UT, it was unbearable for some reason.
That Duetanon went ahead and not only fixed the broken characterization of Alto and Teagan, but then went ahead and made another that, while it might have just been out of his own project, addressed the horrific use of the system. Also the fact that he just went ahead and lowered the bullshittery in the original game, that really help sooth my autism.
They're certainly not perfect, but I enjoy them both, all the same.

Probably the only good part of the game is the music selection. A lot of people praise the music in Duet, but few realize that the music used there is actually used in the base game under similar circumstances. If I'm not mistaken, the only songs that were added by Duet Anon were Nuclear and With a Little Help from my Friends. At least, that's how Duet Anon makes it seem, as I've seen him praise the original song choice a number of times.

It really is interesting, and very often the music sets the mood of what's going one.
It makes me wonder if most people follow FP's view of the game solely because the music manipulates their emotions. Perhaps if Loli Oasis hadn't turned the music off when he first streamed, we too may have succumb to its effects.
Of course with random music playing, the only thing that could affect us was the words and actions of the characters. Perhaps this is why it's so obvious to us that Teagan did nothing wrong.

The other problem is that part of feral's thesis is right: Teagan really did make mistakes. The idea of Teagan becoming frustrated and lashing out due to the burden of caring about someone who doesn't seem to care about herself makes for a genuinely compelling character arc. The big problem with the game is with Alto and the fact that Alto never confronts the ways that she's been cruel herself, even while Teagan is trying to change for the better. The other character arcs would work if not for this.

Maybe it's just that I haven't seen enough of the first half of the game, since I miss most times it's streamed, but I feel the other thing is that Teagan isn't shown to be controlling enough. The only time I feel she actually makes a mistake is in tearing up the world tuning score. Criticising Alto's decisions? True a constant critic for a best friend wounds your self-esteem, but Uncommon Time's telling of it breaks for two big reasons. One, Teagan is critical but we're told her problem is controlling, that she knows what's best. That's used to express agency, the other thing Alto needs to express…but if so, then Alto's been expressing agency this entire time and Teagan was allowing it. Two, the moments we're shown Teagan is critical of are very rational things to criticise. They're even further vindicated when Alto's world-destructive wishes are revealed; turns out Teagan really was stopping a self-sabotage. I don't think I want those events changed at all, I just want the framing and context to match it, the sort of thing Duet did. Totally agreed about the character arc/dynamic. It's unusual to see, but also relatable like it shouldn't be

I'll agree that Feral's thesis is partially correct.
I'll certainly agree that Teagan made a ton of mistakes. She often lets her frustration get the better of her. Especially in the bar scene before the first World Tuning. For those that don't know, in the scene Teagan gets drunk and starts griping about her frustrations; in particular she goes on a tangent about how her life would have been better had she never met Alto. The thing is, it doesn't appear that Teagan is trying to hurt Alto when she says this, so much as Teagan is sharing her frustrations with Alto (though understandably Alto is hurt by this statement).
I think this here is the part of the thesis which FP is outright wrong: Feral believes that hurting someone inadvertently is tantamount to abuse. That context doesn't matter and that the people who hurt you are bad people no matter their reasons. I actually read "canon" fanfiction by FP as a means to get additional insight into lore (because I hate myself, I guess) and even in these stories you see this philosophy play out. In one fanfiction set after Ending 1 Meirin runs into Teagan, whom has become a world class violinist in high demand. Throughout the fic Teagan acts like Teagan, which Meirin is very much attracted to, but the story acts as if Teagan is harming Meirin by acting in a manner that Meirin finds attractive (because Teagan has no interest in Meirin). Thus, Teagan is at fault for being too attractive while being unobtainable, which the fic dictates is harming Meirin.

This is true. The big reason why Teagan going NUCLEAR after the World Tuning is so understandable is because throughout the game, Teagan had been allowing Alto to do as she pleased. Teagan had been offering advice and criticism, but ultimately allowed Alto to make her own decisions. This is probably the weirdest part of the entire game: We are TOLD Teagan is controlling, but other than telling Alto what she needs to do to survive, Teagan really doesn't make any specific demands or tries to control the situation.

I didn't get that out of it - Meirin isn't really getting hurt at all and is still happy to be friends with Teagan. The more interesting thing about that story is that Alto isn't in it. The "happy ending" followup showing everyone moving on and being content with their lives just completely excludes her. She's isolated from the others and not sharing in the happiness that they've got, so the assumption has to be that she isn't happy at all. I just can't help but take that as Alto fucking up so hard that even feral couldn't give her a really happy ending after the choices she's made. Read a certain way, Uncommon Time is a real tragedy.

In short, a fairy's gender is based off of what element of magic they are most talented with, so a "transgender" fairy is a fairy that is talented in one element, but prefers to cast with a different element.

Some people are saying her voice isn't deep enough, but I think it's the tone. There is a lot of "valley girl" vocal inflection going on. You can tell that she's trying to enunciate clearly, but she ends up sounding a bit tense and nasally in parts.
