The ones before might've had one clear as day solution but you were never navigated trough it with hints and batman vision and had to find the "way" yourself.
Which is the biggest problem I had with the last game where it relies completly on you using it, since the gameworld itself very rarley gives you hints trough playing the game. You need to use it otherwise it happens more often then not that you're simply stuck short of shooting everything to pieces.

I don't know, I've played Blood Money for well over a hundred hours so I know most maps inside out. In nuHitman I did end up using very few tricks and mostly just shot everyone, but that's the same thing I did in BM on my first playthrough, too. You just play more and maybe watch/read guides and figure out more shit along the line. What bothered me about nuHitman was that despite fucking up I always achieved silent assassin with all the autosaves and manual saves and shit. And then some of the objectives, like the virus, really had the solution hammered in your face

Thief was barely a stealth game to be honest. It was more of a first person atmospheric adventure game. Most encounters were easily winnable by either just running away since the AI was dumb as rocks and the only threatening NPC enemy was archers or just circling around the melee enemies and whacking them with your sword, unless the mission prevented that. It was made slightly more stealth in Thief 2 and 3, but only really The Dark Mod made the AI smart and threatening since YOU CAN'T KNOCK THEM OUT ONCE FULLY ALERTED. This isn't even mentioning the fact that they are legitimately strong too since many enemies can have plate armor which blocks your shitty shortsword.
