Maps are supposed to be larger, so you should have multiple ways to get to your objective and it shouldn't feel as restricting as before.

It's been a while, and I wasn't really paying that close of attention, but basically the empire was investigating ruins or something near the protagonists orphanage and happened to run across them on their way out. They found out that your waifu caretaker girl had the potential to become a Valkyria so they burned down the orphanage and kidnapped her. The surviving children vowed to become successful and important people so that some day they could lead the country to war with the Empire to get their revenge. Which they did. One was a high level cabinet member, one controlled the press, one was a high-level intelligence agent, one was an arms dealer, and the main character was a soldier in a black-ops anti-valkyria unit which was just a front for engaging in behind-the-scenes raids and attacks that would goad the empire into attacking - so that the country would have justification for invading their neighbors and liberating them from the Empire (and then taking them over and using them as a buffer and labor force for the war effort).
Anyhow, I don't remember the exact circumstances, but by the end of the game it becomes necessary to reveal the conspiracy in order to get the Empire to split it's forces and invade. You win, but everybody knows they were used as pawns for a revenge scheme, which was treason. The Princess doesn't want to issue the death sentience, but since one of your conspirators was a high level advisor and the princess was in your unit, it was the only way to wash blame from the Royal Family and provide political stability in the days after the war when they still had all these freed ex-Empire satellite nations they were managing. So you all agreed to get executed so that the nation wouldn't end up in a civil war, or become too weak to manage it's territories and just end up in another war later, or end up axing the royal family just to potentially put in someone who could end up being a tyrant like the Emperor.

Yeah, as a premise, it had some real potential - but it was squandered in execution and the game which encapsulated all of it was "run up to enemy and spam attack to win" garbage devoid of any nuanced mechanics or strategy. Maybe they had something really special in the early days of development, but once people started throwing autistic fits about the changes and Sega had to backpedal - they pretty much just gave up halfway through development. If they had just made it it's own franchise, and given it it's own name, maybe it wouldn't have turned out so bad in the end.

That's the issue here. Japanese companies seem to have a REALLY hard time understanding foreign markets and what sells and what doesn't sell. This is why we have what we have today where Nintendo and Sony literally bows down to and PROGRAMS THEIR GAMES based on the opinions of soyboys at their USA branchs. Early on in the days of gaming companies tried to venture into the American market only to have their games completely flop for reasons unrelated to the actual game and the companies had no idea what the fuck happened so they just pulled out of the US market for years before ever considering trying again. It's basically the same thing with ports to other platforms, console games that get ported to PC usually get given to companies that "specialize" in this, if these companies make mistakes in this port the game basically flops completely and the original developers/publishers think twice before porting to PC again. Same thing with Linux it's just especially bad there since most people , me included, who use Linux are sticklers and it shows in their critiques of ports which come to their operating system.
TL;DR: Publishers/Developers don't know how to properly react to failures in a new/foreign market that they don't understand.

Apart from the fuckers being built tougher than Lancers (often had to use grenades on them), their intercepting shots with mortars can do serious damage. It's heavily telegraphed, so you're basically being given the choice to weave or get hit. Just seems that enemies always choose to weave and never get hit, while if you go to shoot after a mortar has fired, odds are it's gonna land on you.

The most glaring one would be the squad mascot, which appears in a grand total of 3 scenes or so.
VC3 is fairly similar in that regard, there's really not that much of it.
