I blame achievements, as they replaced cheats as rewards. Not to mention paid cosmetics doing away with unlockables, and the password system being completely tossed away. The most recent game I can think of with such a thing is New Super Mario Bros on the DS, where beating the game tells you to hold down certain buttons while starting the game to play as Luigi.

Spyro and Ratchet's Skill Points were great. They basically functioned as secret extra collectables. "Burn all of this type of tree," or whatever. Once Trophies became a thing they started replacing Skill Points, only instead of being secret extra collectables or secret extra challenges, then they were just "kill X guys with Y gun."
Achievements/Trophies replaced the concept of unlocking actual content for doing things, and DLC replaced the actual content that you would have unlocked. They work in tandem.

Lastly, the interwebs being available to more or less anyone means that publishers also give you far less time for QA because any game-breaking can be fixed via patches that your customers probably download automatically via Steam or other portals. Another idea might be to hide files on an online site that requires an input password. You'd download them and put it into the game folder, then boom. Only downside is that it might lower immersion.

Part of it is that some games target a specific culture; ask for tips on a game that has a difficulty wall and you'll be told to git gud. Sure the developers could have made a casual mode and a hard mode to cater to everyone, but they know they'll appeal to a specific audience if they gate the game off.
