Also, the Silent Hill HD Collection because Konami lost the original source code for Silent Hill 2 & 3. They instead had to make HD versions of the earlier, incomplete builds they still had of those games.

Been enjoying Detention so far. Dreadout was Indonesian, this time it's Taiwanese. 2D point and click with ghosts to avoid.

They really put effort into the atmosphere and sound design. The setting is a depressing campus in the dumps of bumpfuck nowhere, Taiwan, during an era of martial law and political repression. I didn't see any unique taiwanese ghosts the way dreadout really works on indonesian mythology, but Detention instead works on that historical setting to set a bleak environment for supernatural corruption to creep in.

You're a teenage girl who seems to have a few screws loose and little hope for the future, and now there are ghosts around. I wouldn't call it scary, but it's definitely creepy and bleak.

Much like modern horror movies I feel like Horror games have stopped trying new things and just rehash the older concepts that worked et nausea. Both in terms of unchecked remakes/sequels, and because smaller studios borrow concepts from other titles but water down the mechanics in the process.

Hope exists, it always does because it's the last thing left in the proverbial pandora's box. I just can't really think of how to make me care about horror games that much. I'm the kind of guy who can be easily unnerved when playing a vidya, I remember actually putting down the controller while playing the Dark Sector simply because the idea of advancing through the first sewer level and having an enemy appearing from the shadows got to me. But that was an action game and I don't get anywhere near the same dread when playing most actual horror games.

Posting it here rather than making a thread, because honestly 8/v/ is kind of getting like a bad place to try and find actual game discussion nowadays, but did you see the "#SIREN2018" deal on japanese social media?

Sony hosted a gallery event for a 15th anniversary of Siren with the name 'coming from the grave'.

I started a new playthrough of Dead Space since I never finished it and it's been so damn long. Despite looking a lot uglier than I remember, this game still manages to pile on the spooks.

At first it was kind of annoying dealing with the jump scares, but now I see that the parts where nothing is happening are really tense due to the threat of a jump scare and I can appreciate that. The sound design is really good at times but it does suffer from obnoxiously loud grating noises that go on just a bit too long and wear out their welcome.

I am also playing on Hard and was already having ammo trouble before leaving Chapter 1.

Overall, pretty great game. It's hard to see how the horror genre ended up the way it did considering Dead Space proves they can do solid AAA horror when they want to.

>>15256093

I don't expect Capcom to make another fixed camera game.

The last new fixed camera RE game came out in 2002. There was almost zero chance of keeping that style in a brand new game, and Capcom had to add zoomed in 16:9 mode and a new control scheme in the remasters just for people being idiots with the old games.

I'm not under the impression that the camera angle is what makes the game. I think people put too much emphasis on it.

The thing people hate about them is that at the time they were the popular type of game. It resulted in a whole bunch of clones that were all garbage and not designed with the control limitations in mind. Plus RE games came out too fast and close together. Between 1996 and 2004 12 Resident Evil games came out. That is nearly 2 a year plus Silent Hill and all the clones. People just got sick of it the same way they got sick of Mega Man which had 6 entries on the NES alone.

Nah, I meant how it feels different. After RE4, that shoulder camera makes it feels like action game where you are in full control and being responsive and with reduced view of nearly what your character sees. Older RE fixed-camera somehow makes you feels like a survivor of a bad ordeal. I don't know, it feels like horror movies where you watch characters do things and stuffs.

Also newer RE feels sterile, safe, and clean, but not alive. Older RE feels dirty and dangerous, but somehow alive. Maybe it is the art direction or the modern graphics and lazy devs goes full particles and "blob monsters are scary lolz" instead of bloody, gory, and dirty.

It really must take actual autism to want tank controls and shitty camera angles back.

They don't even add more tension to the game, just make it more tedious to control your character and more tedious as you wait for zombies to come onto screen. You can get just as many jump scares and I would argue a better atmosphere giving you the perspective your character has with the added benefit of actually knowing where your gun is pointing and an even bigger benefit of being able to have a more detailed environment with more interactions.

The thing about FPS controls is they are basically tank controls but turning uses a slightly differen scheme, for something with fixed camera angles you either go simple 2D controls or tank, otherwise it may be disorienting between screens (ie, DMC1), BTW, did you know RE4 has tank controls?

The camera can change the mood like you said, but it doesn't make it not a horror game. Dead Space is over the shoulder and it does a good job at atmosphere, whereas Code Veronica is fixed camera (that slides around at times like on a fixed rail) but is the most action heavy classic RE game that exists.

Okay that's definitely a problem. You either need to find an SD crt with component, S-Video or RGB scart if you live in Europe. Or if you want to use high definition displays than you need better scaling. Something like a framemeister or open source scan converter. Personally I think Final Fantasy 7 and RE1 backgrounds look amazing with the OSSC outputting them at 5x native resolution with hybrid scanlines.

Indeed, and this was used to great effect in the second game, the chapter where you revisit the ishimura is the scariest in the whole franchise because you can clearly hear and see necros crawling around, and if you've played the first game beforehand you're fully expecting to get jumped in a few rooms, namely decontamination and where the hunter was created, but they don't bother to attack you until near the end where you get ambushed by 2 enhanced brutes in a corridor without proper lighting.

>I am also playing on Hard and was already having ammo trouble before leaving Chapter 1.

Stick to the plasma cutter, all the other weapons are shit, the PC kills with 2-3 shots and necros are guaranteed to drop at least 3 so unless you're shooting at the body you shouldn't run out of ammo, especially in chapter 1.

Turn off the music if you haven't already done so, it adds nothing to the game and it can be a lifesaver in the second game if you're playing on hardcore.

Why are modern horror games actively trying to give you heart attack? They just throw shrieking enemies right on your face. Can't devs take a more subtle approach?
