Japanese people don't really have standards for consumption. Only for production. They'll just consume whatever's popular at any given time, not having any particular opinion on it besides "okay, good."

It's the same way for games, movies, and music. Oh, and TV is probably the worst offender to this. I was in Japan for about a month one time, basically every damn household I went to had some weird "comedy" show playing and the same damn cast of 10 people would show up all day. And there was always this one show about approaching gaijin at the airport asking why they came to Japan.

The reason Japanese games tend to be better than Western games isn't because Japanese people have good taste. It's because the Japanese work ethic puts a large emphasis on unconditional quality of output.

Automata has the weakest story of Taro's games. Caim is fucking mute yet is more interesting than 2B and A2. 9S is better but Automata overall has very weak characters. A2 has so little going on mostly because her story is in Taro's stage play. And yes DOD3 and Nier have better music on Okabe's part. Not to say Automata's was bad or anything.
