There were also slight elements of him turning from a fledgling boy to a full-on heroic warrior, as he starts out reluctantly leaving home, but ends his adventure willingly leaving his home to help find a new kingdom. Link shouldn't be holding other characters back, just because he happens to be the protagonist. Best post in the thread. A good companion stands on their own as a character, they're more than just Link's cheerleader. Whether that means having a life beyond him like Tatl did, or having a big role in the story like KoRL and Midna do, or even just having an arc like Linebeck did. No companion has come close to eclipsing Link or taking importance away from him - Link always had to do the dungeons, he always does the quests, and the villains couldn't be defeated without him.
What a good companion does is feel valuable, make for good adventuring company, and add to the richness of the setting.

If you can find others to play it with, which will probably be difficult, Four Swords Adventure. It's one of the most fun co-operative adventures I've ever played, but it's only worthwhile in multiplayer. Also, the first Zelda has a fun simplicity to it that none of the others really have, and Zelda II is just such a unique experience in the franchise, that I suggest playing it. You missed it but I listed "1" in the ranking, representing the original. Its a very flawed game (dungeons are trash) but it appeals to me more than all the other ones since I really appreciate its simplicity and mysteriousness. It's the kind of game where couldn't imagine how boring it would be to play it with a guide or something, it would at most be appropriate to trade secrets with friends through word of mouth.

Traveling the overworld is as generic, simple and unappealing at least by today's standar as it can, then you get in encounters with mobs, dungeons and whatnot, that's when the true game reveals itself as a sidescroller well, aside from the place you start, it was the biggest change since Zelda 1, but then other 2d games started to imitate the style even if it was on a lesser degree From what i recall a few sections in Oracle/Seasons are sidescrollers
