Can somebody pls explain to me why video games cost so fucking much? Nowerdays you have to spend about 50-70 bucks (At least in Europe) on a game and then additionally 20 Dollars for a season pass.

And then you can only hope there's no additional extra DLC or required ingame money or lootboxes.

So you'll be spending up to 80-90 Dollars per game.

And if you think about how many "Must Play" title are released…

Just last year, there was Persona 5, Zelda BOTW, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Nier Automata, RE7, Metroid SR, like how are they expecting people to pay for this? I could only half of those games bc my rich ass brother bought them for me. I'm a broke ass student.

I can't afford this. And as a pupil I couldn't afford that shit as well.

A typical kid would have to safe money for like 4-5 months to buy a single fucking game. And (at least for Nintendo) isn't kids the target audience? Then why the fuck are games so fucking expensive?

I get that it takes a lot of time and effort to create a game but afterwards it's just simple "Put the shit on the cd/cardridge and send it to the stores". And I can't imagine that this shit costs 40+ Dollars per game cardridge/cd.

7b70ac No.15208729

Can only speak as an American but I can effortlessly get brand new games for about 10 dollars when they would normally sell for 60. Any gamestop is good for this. If you are going to school you are already making a mistake.

Inflation.

a11f8b No.15208746

If you adjust for inflation when looking at game prices from decades ago compared to now you will find a disparity.

Games today cost less than they used to, in America, because the value of the us dollar has depreciated while the price of games has started consistent.

Kikes are inflating and fucking up the economy, that's why. It should be obvious.

7a4e78 No.15208754

In the US, game launch prices these days average about $40 for handheld (whether or not that will matter in the future depends on if handhelds proper stick around), $60 for console games, not counting season passes, DLC, or LE/CEs. Console games that are either "end of gen"/"ported forward" might be a cheaper $50. Handheld games used to average about $30 if memory serves, with some companies like Square-Enix charging more like $35-40 because they thought they could (and did) get away with it.

>Nier: Automata

Bit funny you bring you that up. It's been like a year and a fourth since it came out, yet that one's still sitting at $50 or so anywhere I look. Not sure what that speaks more of: lowish physical availability, extremely high demand, the game's quality, or no one wanting to feel they're losing shekels on it. I'm still waiting for somewhere out here to do a pricing fuck up.

42ce9b No.15208765

Yeah, I also buy used games when I really wanna play a certain title, but when a game has just been released, it's hard to find resellers. At least from my experience. And I cannot wait to play the new Smash. So when it finally drops I wanna get it as soon as possible, so I'll be spending a lot of money again (considering that there'll probably be DLC), just to play a fucking video game. And yeah, it's my own fault when I'm bad at controlling my urges.

But with so many good games coming out nowerdays it's kinda hard to hold back.

It's just so weird to me that games, products you use for maybe a month (With some exceptions ofc) and is then disposable, costs so fucking much.

Why not, unless a game is liable to have a multiplayerbase limited to the time around release, wait on mainstream shit that has no real chance of selling badly with the masses, buy it cheaper preowned down the line, and save dropping money day one for shit that likely will not be that easy to find down the line? Of course, that's assuming you can find many current games worth putting the money down on.

Pirate that shit, alternately wait for it to drop in price, there's plenty of games to play and personally the only reason to buy it on day 1 is if it has an online mode you just have to play for some reason or you suck at hiding spoilers. On PC there's plently of legit sites that have some really good deals year round.

Also

>A typical kid would have to safe money for like 4-5 months to buy a single fucking game

Growing up I would just skip lunch and pocket my lunch money, and I could usually buy a used or old game every two months or so with maybe one or two new games a year. This was in the late 90s to mid 2000s though.

It doesn't even deign participate in steam sales half the time, so I'd say it's more like Sony completely forgot about it.

Lucky you, I had to bring lunches from home growing up, didn't get an allowance, and playing anything new meant trading most of my old stuff in. Eventually I just settled into playing the same two series, because at least those (to a degree; dodged a fucking bullet a few times somehow) I could expect to like what was in them.

>>15208787

I don't know. That's about the price for both preowned and what new copies there still are (assuming it's still getting prints).

Wouldn't it be more on Platinum as developer, or more likely Square as publisher, if it gets into markdowns or not? And of course that's applying it to the digital version.

Yeah that's why they're always shilled on 90% off sales, right?

Come on, if a product is constantly being sold on offers higher than at least, 50 off, the real product is just being sold overvalued. The normal price is not the real price it has, it would be an average of the normal price and the most constant sale offering, hell even less, who the fuck buys games at normal price. Heck, who the fuck buys games in a DRM platform that tracks all your data?

Get a grip. Games are worth not nothing, just the components you need to get them running. The rest is just morality and morality in this day and age is pretty fucked.

>>15208800

>Yeah that's why they're always shilled on 90% off sales, right?

I've honestly been questioning if that's been why some companies are so prone to leaving digital versions of games full/nearly full price long after release, just to make the occasional "WOW 40% OFF" markdowns more appealing than just continually reducing the price. Otherwise it just strikes me as them being retarded, especially when you have cases where physical copies have dropped drastically but the digital one doesn't even bother to compete.

Because many more useless people (marketing) are working on videogames and they need to get paid. videosgames don`t get programmed anymore with only 5 japs, 20kilo rice and 50l sake.

I am surprised how cheap PS4 games are getting over half/ a year after release. Mostly the cost around 20-30 Euros.

>According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index, the dollar experienced an average inflation rate of 2.37% per year. Prices in 2018 are 92.80% higher than prices in 1990.

>In other words, $60 in 1990 is equivalent in purchasing power to $115.68 in 2018, a difference of $55.68 over 28 years.

You know, I don't think 'Inflation' is the whole picture here. I'm fairly certain it is much cheaper to manufacturer physical games than it was. On top of that digital sales are through the roof and there are no real publishing costs there, besides distributer cut.

That's how it's always been when adjusting for inflation. Cartridge based titles like on the N64 were even more expensive. However the cost doesn't make as much sense for digital titles and that's mostly because of publishers not wanting to piss off retailers for offering the same product, digitally, for much cheaper.

Nigga cost of living has gone up but wages haven't matched which means there is less money to spend of luxuries. I will never be happy paying 20 bucks NZD for a video game even with this mass inflation we have and they're asking closer to 100 for a AAA new release. The publishers can get fucked if they really think I'm going to spend that much on it. 10 dollars is a decent price for a game, 15 if it's actually good.

Demand.

If people didn't buy those things at that price they wouldn't be able to do it.

Considering you can get games "for free" and still companies get loads of money you can get the picture.

I thought Capcom would go to shit after the fuck up with RE5. They included all the content in the physical copy yet you had to pay a lot to unlock everything. Guess what? People paid and Capcom kept the format.

You can also buy plenty of cheap games on Steam. Just not the AAA ones.
