I don't watch the vast majority of runners that do go to these events. However, the ones I watch that do go seem like honest people, and I think they genuinely go to meet up with friends and have a good time. Believe it or not there are some "normal" guys in the community still, who are sort of disconnected from all the other shit or just don't care about it.
The rest, yeah it's exposure, there is a lot of whoring going on in the speedrunning community lately as far as I can tell, with new people coming in looking for viewers and donations as the hobby penetrates the public consciousness more and more.
