Daikatana with the fan patch and sidekicks disabled. It's legitimately better than any AAA shooter released in the past decade. It's a good gauge of how far the game industry has fallen when a title that was considered one of the worst of all time shits on modern takes on the genre.

If you're looking for FPS games of near the same era specifically, I'll toss Redneck Rampage into the ring, but I admit I haven't played beyond the shareware levels. I'm in a bit of a crap mood, so nothing else is coming to mind that would be a gritty fun-fest that pushes the right buttons. Maybe objectively good games that stand the test of time? Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, and Blaster Master Zero come to mind, but they're a bit slower in terms of gameplay, or the point where you can get rolling and killing everything in sight. I like games where you gradually get more powerful by learning or gaining new abilities, getting new weapons, and just getting overall better as the game progresses, but not in the way of "you beat level 2! Now you can double jump!" bullshit. I want to have to go out of my way to find stuff, and actually be rewarded for skill, not headbutting a brick wall until the game pisses level-ups onto you.

It's actually more or less a modded Wolfenstein, but it does have its own quirks to make it stand out.
Duke Nukem 3D
Solid classic FPS with more than enough to stand out from Doom, while retaining similar levels of play.
Blood
Similar to Duke Nukem (it's also on the same engine), it has enough to distinguish itself from Doom so as to not be boring, but similar enough to not feel like a totally different game.
Strife
Quite a bit different, as it uses a few RPG mechanics - but at its heart, is still a Doom-style game with plenty of shooting, just with a different style of progression.
Quake
id's next game is fantastic, but for very different reasons - the gameplay is most definitely different from Doom, but you come to appreciate it for what it is - a solid shooter that set the groundwork for future FPS's.

Okay, here's the confusing part on this map:
I'm looking through the various ZDOOM wiki pages and am still not sure what I'm looking for.
When you use the switches, you 'place' the skulls onto the platforms. Here's the tricky part: I want every skull spawned by this system to in turn have a script that triggers when it is picked up.
Example:
When the player uses the yellow altar, the yellow bars raise. If he walks onto the altar to pick it back up, they will lower. However, I do not know how to make it so that the script applies to each new spawned actor of that type on that spawnspot location

It's on par with with most of the FPS from the late 90s/early 00s, people were disappointed and calling it the worst game ever due to the ridiculous massive hype behind it that it obviously failed to live up to and never could. The story and characters aren't good but they are entertainingly cheesy like a B movie. It's got legit great level design in many places, tons of well done secrets incentivizing exploration and varied enemies encouraging weapon switching. I'll play this game over the latest AAA shooter any day. Just actually give it a try (with fan patch) to see for yourself instead of lumping in with the hivemind. Also the soundtrack is legit great and 90s as fuck.
