I really miss these old game graphics, for some reason they are giving me this warm and happy feeling, mysterious also. I used to play demo games from game magazine cd's a lot and almost always got this eerie (not particularly spooky), alone, cozy feeling. The eeriness is probably because of at some poing you realise you are in a designed map and you can't get out of it when you see those 2D low-res tree textures like at that forest map in CS 1.6, but at the same time you love to explore the map. I just realised this when I was playing Deer Avenger 4 on picrel map. Maybe it is the semi poly modelling but shit feels so strange.

What are some games similar with this feeling and graphics? Other than Max Payne 1-2, Prince of Persia 3D, Re-Volt, SWAT 3.

I hope I made myself clear or maybe I am autistic

Yeah, those pre-five bazillion shaders graphics are comfy. Dark Forces 2 has them.

You got it anon. Thank you very much for your suggestions, I played both of them and that is exactly what I am talking about. Really enjoyed the first Spider-Man, there is nothing I can do to go back in time to those days and experience the same feelings.

I will check it out. Early Hitman games are also has it.

Fixed function pipeline is objectively the low point of videogame graphics. That is when everything started looking samey and it only got a little better when shaders came around. Kill yourselves 2000s nostalgiafags.

>Toy Story

I loved that game as a kid. It's so good.

There's something to be said for visual clarity. Simple models, bold colours, environments not cluttered with a million different objects. I feel I'm straining my eyes with a lot of modern games.

it is no mystery. because the world used to have a more positive outlook. its not just your perspective, things have taken a turn for the worse.

I actually think that it might be due to their minimalistic nature, ironically simpler shapes convert emotion and atmosphere better than more complicated ones. Ironically older games also seem to have better lighting than newer ones.

I don't miss old 3D graphics at all. They have a distinct look, but it was a matter of technical limitations. It's like jpeg artifacts, or noise in analog video. These are things that dilute the artist's vision during the transition from their mind into the medium. For me, the more accurately the art is able to be depicted, the better. That said, I consider all the various "looks" of games over the years to be fair game now that we have the tech to display just about anything we want. Devs can draw from 40 years of gaming when they decide how they want their game to look, whether they're inspired by the art itself, or a certain look created unintentionally by technical limits.
