Do the tutorial if it's your first time playing. You can skip specific tasks that are stupid, ie. "look at the meteor".
It takes research/skill books to unlock tech, usually all unlocked books are available at the Library (ask others for location, subject to change). Right click on a book to get a skill scroll, then right click on scroll to learn tech.
You can change the chat format by pressing Tab, then C.
When cutting trees, make sure to remove the tree stump (prevents regrowth of the tree) and the branches (blocks foliage growth).
If you need building materials, ask/check the economy tab (Y) to see who is selling them, you can get a much better deal than trying to make it yourself.
<Don't spend skill points on Hunting, Digging, Mining, Logging. SP can be refunded, but you lose 30% of invested SP on each refund.
Farming does not work like in other games, if you just plant a bunch of shit in a random location, you will get very poor results. Read https://eco.gamepedia.com/Agriculture, use map overlays and if you can get one, a Soil Sampler.
<if something natively grows in a location, you can usually plant it right there though
The map currently does not support every plant type, good luck trying to terraform. Note that any terraforming changes take up to 10 minutes to show up as a change on a soil sampler/map overlay.

I bought and played this months ago, it really is a grindfest. The nutrition/food system is pretty stupid considering you gain more hunger whenever you do anything but you can't feed yourself unless you spend even more time scavenging for scraps that don't barely have any nutritional value at all.
Providing the resources to build even a semi-decent home will take you days of mining/chopping. Hope you have the money for it to purchase food from the one guy everybody will be relying on (plus the sales tax by the jewish government you goy cattle keep voting in) or else you're fucked.
You want to transport anything via cart? Too bad you need to build roads/bridges/slopes to get anywhere which will take you even more time to plan it all out and adjust the terrain to fit your need. If you need to go through your neighbor's plot of land hope he allows you to build on his land or your cart isn't going anywhere unless makes accommodations for your cart.
Everything takes a lot of time, everything requires you to be dependent on the farmer and chef, the servers are unstable af but I keep finding myself wanting to play the game, it really is a unique kind of game, a thinking man's game, a cooperative society interdependent-based game with economics, politics, laws, environmental consequences, and a meteor you'll all have to work together to destroy (or you can just disable the meteor and strive to live in a pseudo-ancap society with a government in place).

The degree of grind depends on what you decide to do, and how others are playing. When you have a mason or carpenter producing cheap building blocks and exchanging them at a low profit margin, it's significantly easier to get started. Again with food and cooking, it depends on how others play. On the previous server, farmed food was in huge abundance, and even low level cooked food was cheap. Now on 7.6 everyone can cook low-end food, but due to the map, there isn't such a big abundance of crops, some crops are extremely hard to farm.

Well I guess I'll share my thoughts while we wait for the server to come back up.
After 2 days of playing I really enjoyed this. I only got to experience crafting and gathering, which I guess are the least exciting parts of the game, but these were still pretty good. I had a lot of fun building my house because the building system was actually very well designed (don't remember the last time a digging/building game required you to actually move earth one by one instead of magically compacting thousands of square meters of dirt in your pocket), and the bonuses you get from different rooms help guide the design of the house (something I normally struggle with because of no creativity). The extensive infrastructure for player-run economy, including contracting people to do various "jobs" for you is really cool. Of course, that sort of think depends on players not being retarded to work, but at least this server was working quite well. It does seem to strongly encourage cooperation by locking away advanced recipes and efficiency/speed bonuses behind expensive skill trees, so you would probably have trouble playing with <5 people, but then if you were so few you could probably cheat or something. There also seemed to be a ton of content and it looked pretty nice. Pretty much what I always wished Minecraft could have been.
I'm really curious to see the government and pollution aspects of the game (I think the server is in early-ish game right now).
It does run like dogshit, with sudden FPS drops (although my computer is pretty potato) and constant server crashes, but honestly it's tolerable. The UI does make fiddling with the settings easy by displaying the FPS and letting you change them on the fly.
The UI is a bit clunky, but you get used to it. I definitely miss things like shift-click to transfer or Factorio's ctrl+click. But it works decently well, and linked containers (letting nearby crafting stations and containers to share inventory) is a great QoL feature. The WebUI is a great idea, and I wish they moved more stuff to it, like for instance pricing data.
I think I will probably buy it. Even if devs fuck up utterly, I think I can already get $30 of value out of it. But what do you guys think, those of you that bought it? Is it fun to play on the random public servers?

There is a single option in the configs, "verify login" or something like that, if you set it to false, pirates can connect. Nothing else is needed for the server.

I was checking out the other ones while waiting for this one to recover. Seems like it's better if you can join very early in the server's lifetime, otherwise it's very hard to have much fun. Also some how the steam version has more bugs than the cracked.

I think it comes down to the exact same mindset that separates pirates from buyfags. Skill scrolls are DRM; you get one copy from the source (skill books), which the creator keeps possession of and guards closely. Even though the contents are just information, and can be reproduced infinitely at zero cost, buyers get one copy and are forbidden from making more. It makes sense that public servers full of buyfags would sell skill scrolls, while the cracked /v/ serb just chucks all the books in a library chest.

Surprisingly, the vast majority of the planet is unclaimed, despite being so small. Of course part of that is that there are less players and less active players, but even so. I think about 25% of the "useful" land might be claimed.

No, sp gain does not scale with population. It's set in difficulty.eco, you must have a 15x multiplier or something. If you started the server from within the game, it gives you a collaboration level option, that also does the same thing, changes multipliers.
