I wasn't referring to that, I was referring to "only episode 1 of Doom is good".

Episode 2 was good with the exception of E2M9 which was a joke (made even funnier that Sandy Petersen said it was his best work), it's just a level with three rooms.

Episode 3 wasn't very memorable but mostly because it was the least played of the original three episodes Doom came with, only Cathedral of Pain was mildly annoying with its teleporters but the rest of the levels weren't so bad.

Episode 4 was meant for seasoned players that wanted an extra challenge. It suffered from the same issues that episodes 3&4 of Heretic had where the first couple levels had very steep difficulty but the rest of it was ok since you've acquired most of the guns at that point.

I found the default quite comfortable because keyboards in the 90's had a bit different layout. There was no Windows or Menu key and the Right Ctr, alt ,shift &space where right next to each other and that was all right next to the arrow keys. So instead of wasd it was more like resting your index and pointer on the arrow keys and your pinky and ring finger for alt/ctr/enter/space. All you would need to do is make the left mouse move forward and you could use the arrow keys or alt to strafe. Comfy as fuck

After playing Doom 2 over and over again, I can say that it's way worse than Doom 1. The design in Doom 1 had at least some kind of sense, the first episode was clearly a military complex, the second episode was a corrupted military complex, and the third episode was clearly hell. However, in Doom 2, the first levels are a military base of sorts, and then everything goes to shit after MAP07, which is an excellent boss level. What the fuck is "Tricks and Traps" even supposed to be? Did you die after MAP07? Are you in hell again? That fucking map stands out like a sore thumb, it's a gimmick demo instead of a good level. And then, The Pit, which is a clusterfuck of elevators and demons in corridors confirming that yes, you're in hell again.

Then, nothing remarkable until the Circle of Destruction which is also a good boss level, and then everything turns fucking brown, like someone smeared shit all over the screen. I could swear that I learned to speedrun those levels only to save me the hassle of having to play them. Painting an arrow on the ground telling you where do you need to go is immensely retarded. Nothing remarkable until Gotcha! which is also a gimmick, and then two levels more until "Barrels o' Fun". What the fuck is "Barrels o' Fun"? How in the hell this level fits with anything? And after that, I hope you enjoy moving slowly over really small ledges dodging enemy fire. Then, everything after that is unremarkable until The Icon of Sin, which is also a gimmick.

So your problem is literally that a misaligned texture was a door? Isn't that mechanic introduced in E1M1? Obviously not to progress but I recall that being done more than once in vanilla Doom maps, especially Doom 2 maps. Honestly, I fail to see the problem considering those textures are overtly obvious, with high enough gamma or contrast making their jut out even further, not mention that playing a Source Ports at higher resolutions also makes them more distinguished. I would give Doom a pass because it was one of the first FPS games, they didn't really have an idea of game theory or how to properly guide players (modern games typically use lights or "breadcrumb" enemies. Doom 3 is a good example of the latter).

They had to invent the ways to do these things. I think Romero said in an interview that he used sound a lot. Personally, I think this is a shitty way because

The clue is that it's a switch you need to press to continue, you can't get the blue key without it, a switch would not exist if there was no need to use it and the only other option you have in regards to interacting with the world is shooting things and exploding barrels teach you that shooting can effect objects in the world that aren't monsters.

By the time Doom player gets to E3M6, he should have developed an intuitive sense for secret doors, as they usually stand out somehow from the surrounding environment. In this particular case it's marked with the candle as well as texture offset. The automap also helps a great deal to help find would-be secret areas.

Anyway if you thought this was too hard, don't ever play Hexen, Wolf3D, or Eternal Doom. Actually there's a bunch of Doom PWADs that have keys in secret areas, and sometimes they're not even marked. One of the first few levels of The Talosian Incident plays this dirty trick.

The cyberdemon didn't need any monsters to support him. He was on another level of badass altogether, compared to every other Doom creature. The mood is already set with the hanging baron corpses in the opening room (those big badasses you had trouble with in E1M8 and saved a bunch of rockets up for). Then you open a door and probably shoot at one of the annoying lost souls. And then, immediately you hear a roar that's nothing like anything you heard before, following by THUMP-THUMP-THUMP footsteps that shake the entire level. And not long after that you start getting rockets in your face. That's why he didn't need any monsters to support him. And this was a gripping fight back in the day, not just a "ho-hum another cyberdemon" like people would rate it today if someone made the same level. This was some scary shit.

It has this reputation as a fast paced demon slaying good time but in reality its just clearing out an area, which isn't a big deal, and then mashing enter on every square inch in the hopes you activate whatever the fuck it is you need because its never consistent what you can and can't interact with and nothing differentiates it with the rest of the environment. The main reason the animations were so jank in the original was because they had to do each individual frame one at a time from photographs. So they wanted to do as few as possible while at the same time looking passable.

These games also released on floppy disk so they were really down to the wire on how many sprites they could fit on each disk.

See a pattern? it's x^y as x goes from 1 to 6 and y goes from 6 to 1. You're expected to figure out the next number in the sequence. What do those first five numbers have in common? If it's an "exponential matrix" then they must be powers of something. Obviously it has to be some kind of pattern, so you can factor them and try to find a pattern or even just punch some combinations into your calculator until something clicks.

log of 1 = 0

log of 8 = 3

log of 32 = 5

log of 128 = 7

This one's ridiculously easy if you know what logarithms are. That dash separates the pairs of numbers and by looking at the first two you can tell it's just log of x = y so all you have to do to find the answer is find the log of 128.

I miss manuals, they were great for lore and artwork, though the old NES ones usually had translation errors or outright lies that made shit more fucking difficult in the long run. Still, some old games, especially JRPGs, had features that were never explained in-game and required some learning. I recently tried Romancing Saga 2 blind and I have no fucking idea what is going on. There's no digital manual or anything on Switch like there is on 3DS and Wii U.
