Didn't play any horror games recently, but I did watch a string of movies so I've got a horror theme to talk about, if that's acceptable.
That theme is witches. It's one of those horror things I always considered a bit corny and safe. Back when The VVitch was released, I read a few comments about how it made witches scary again. I've got around to seeing it, and while I quite liked it, it didn't do much about my view of witches. It was more about the family's descent into paranoia and madness.
However, I later watched The Lords of Salem, and holy shit did that flick made me loathe witches.
>Ugly, filthy and profane
>Want to destroy all semblance of order and sanity while preaching some bullshit about how the church is slavery and they're totally freedom

>All because they lust after Satan dick
I'm not a christfag by any measure, but Jonathan Hawthorne was entirely fucking right. Anyway, witches done right can be a very nasty, hateable and effective villain, unleashing filthy magic. There's potential for a good horror game, but you have to go balls deep with the theme for it to be effective.

Probably, yeah. AAA horror gaming has been dead for years, but I'm actually kinda hoping the RE2 remake will be okay. But at least the indie stuff can get fairly creative and disgusting with the stuff they come up with. Everything associated with high budget, studio releases are so sanitized and clean and processed that it's just more of the same shit you've seen before.

Ito's work doesn't translate very well outside of manga, look at the recent anime adaptations of his work, they all failed to live up to the originals, I recall people telling me that the old adaptation of Uzumaki was pretty good, but I can't say for sure as i've never seen it. That being said I believe Ito style horror could work in video games, it would just have to be handled very precisely.

I wish we had more media portraying witches in the classical "Old Hag" style. You know, the kind that actually is eight feet tall but hides it through her pronounced hunchback and eats little kids for breakfast, lunch, and supper.
Or alternatively, something like in The Blair Witch Project, where the witch is not so much a corporeal being as she is some kind of eldritch abomination that warps space and time to keep you trapped in her web until your sanity comes apart at the seams.

Cryptids like Mothman, Jersey Devil, etc. off the top of my head. Folk tales would be the next biggest source I would recommend, like Ichabod Crane and everything that happened in Salem during the witch trials, Tommyknockers, Native American stuff like Wendigos, so on. A lot of early American literature is also severely underrated, like the work of Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce, and HP Lovecraft's circle of writers like Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E Howard, and August Derleth.
Hell, I don't see why more people pass up using old-world culture as a base. A sort of modern interpretation like Vampire the Masquerade or George Romero's vampire film Martin.

>Junji Ito
Because people who truly know horror know they can't just hire somebody else to design their creatures (unless they have no art talent and need somebody to translate their vision). Junji Ito is one of the reasons I didn't want Silent Hills, as it seemed like it was going to be a mishmash of ideas with not enough focus or pure direction from one source. That's what made the classics work, as usually one guy did the creature designs while also working on the story and how they would relate. If he outsourced the music, I could understand, Yamaoka really had no idea what most of the games were doing, but the art is extremely important.
That, and apparently Kojima got his ideas from the shitty SH movies

>Sections of an undefeatable, one-hit-killing ghost chasing you
It's classic-style horror and if you like japanese ghost stories you should play it regardless of muh scares. Even the WiiU one, which was completely killed by its baffling pacing, has fun combat due to use of the pad, which essentially emulates VR.

Is Pathologic horror? It sure is eerie but I'm not sure if it qualifies, haven't played much either.

So I have downloaded the demo to home sweet home, it's really standard run and hide from the spooky lady fare. If it uses thai mythology, it does so too sparingly. Dreadout had an identity of its own from the get go.

Pathologic can't be categorized into anything. It escapes any and all genres.

How odd. I assume it got dumped because of the GBA. This fuckin' T-Rex, man.

Meant to add, I've been playing the PC version I didn't realize existed. Works alright on modern Windows, has arrange mode and all. Only thing a bit fucky are the default keyboard controls, run was set to something dumb for instance.

For whatever reason it helped rebooting my PC after installing it, then it ran just fine. Don't believe I've ever run into that with a modernish game.

That's strange, even stranger than RE on gameboy
also why is there a t-rex instead of a raptor?

Right now I'm playing Closed Nightmare.
It is a weird zero escape-like game with puzzles and the visual novel stuff with live action scenes.
For now I like the game, it has a creepy feel to it that is kinda cool but since I'm in the beginning there are allot of questions on what the hell is going on.
Since you wake up in a room and talk to a ghost, later on getting chased down a corridor by a ghost while only meting a manikin that wants you to assemble her then you met a weird occultist dude that reads a book and prays.

I think it's probably gonna come to the west most of the Nippon Ichi Software games comes to the west but I don't know how the localization is gonna be like since it's going to be NISA that will do that work.

It's going to make the game hard to discuss here, that's for sure. I didn't see anything wrong with the western release of Yomawari but well, I know it's sort of the exception and the backlash against NISA is generally warranted. I just wish anons could make the difference between NISA's bullshit and the video games themselves.
