>Have I reached the mines yet?
I think these dwarf type enemies only occur in the mines, or at most in the mines and on the mountain. The game has the exact same wall textures all the time, so it's hard to tell where exactly you are. I can kind of justify in my head using the castle walls in the time (those are some incredibly well hewn mines), but when you get to the forest and the walls still look like this it gets absurd.

The same textures being everywhere was the worst part of the game. If you don't mind restarting and aren't carrying that team into Wiz 7, the super famicom version of Wiz 6 was better about it. Has a fan translation and pretty much identical to the original in almost every way.

I beat 6 without reclassing, but I don't remember the difficulty I was playing at; I might have been on easy just to get the awful interface over with.
Reclassing is somewhat of a mess: you first have to meet the requirements of the class, then you change to that class and you stats drop all to the minimum for that class. This means if you used to be a strong fighter-type and change to a thief you'll be a wimpy little shit. You do get to keep your skills and HP though, so frequent reclassing allows you to learn a lot of different skills. Also, since you are level 1 again your EXP requirements are also the same as those of a new character, allowing you to gain levels very quickly when fighting strong enemies.
However, due to how random level-ups are, it is very hard to predict what classes you will be later able to change to. After becoming a thief there is the danger that you will never be able to become a high-tier fighter class again. At least without cheating. I did this in Wizardry 7, I opened the save file in a hex editor and removed and added stat points as I saw fit. Real hardcore Wizardry players instead reload after each level-up when they don't get the results they want.

Thanks for the tip, with PC games I always assume that the console version is worse, particularly in the interface, but in this case it seems the interface is on par and graphics are much better. Is this the translation you mean?
https://www.romhacking.net/translations/939/
A shame that the translation is stuck at 99%, but I guess it's good enough. I walked around a bit on the first floor with one of the pre-made parties, it looks pretty solid. There is sadly no smoothing as you walk, but at least there is a one-frame flicker to give you the impression that you are walking instead of literally nothing like on the PC. And it has an auto-map, quite a life-saver.

While I would like to agree, while watching interviews I've noted that the creators have an aversion to make that claim, and always say "one of the first". Ah right, I remember the story about how Akalabeth (precursor to Ultima) was sold in ziplock bags. Richer Garriot literally just spent 200$ on floppy discs and bags, went home, copied the game onto the floppies, photocopied the manual, stuck it all in the bags and brought them to the computer store to be sold locally.
Can you imagine this happening today? Some weirdo buying 200$ worth of empty USB sticks at the electronics store and coming back the next day with the sticks in a plastic bag and some photocopied "cover art" he drew himself and expecting the store to sell it for him? How times have changed.
