If the Bethesda were properly trained to use the engine, yeah. The quality of the game itself might not change all that much I imagine. As the other anon said though it'd be cheaper to use their own engine.

Unreal is pretty limited when it comes to anything not-shooting, though, and it's incredibly easy to break.

Think Bethesda bugs but not graphical or physics related.

An idiot blames his tools. 3D Fallout looks bad and is badly optimised because Bethesda are bad developers, not because the engine is shit. Way of the Samurai 3 came out the same year as Fallout 3 on the same engine and looks and runs better and has a better branching storyline with more endings.

I suppose you're talking about Gamebryo, which is a 3D renderer. The actual engine they use is essentially their own, held together by twine and chewing gum at this point.

That's news to me, they certainly sell themselves as a game engine. Also Unreal is used for fighting games as well these days, Street Fighter, Tekken and the Dragonball game all use UE4.

Gamebryo is more of an engine like Renderware, which is actually more something like a toolkit. That's why they're able to get away with saying they don't use Gamebryo anymore, even though the shit they use is still similar to Morrowind.

I don't know the exact ways it works but with Renderware for example EA has had exclusivity to it since 2005 or so but Rockstar was still able to use an existing but modified GTA Vice City engine for GTA LCS and VCS.

It’s not a matter of the engine as other companies have made competent games with Gamebryo. It’s a matter of Bethesda being incompetent with it. I doubt they’d do much better with a different engine.

Gamebyro can handle a shit ton of ragdoll physics and objects. Also, gamebyro isn't really a complete engine, it's just a tool to combine other engines together. What Bethesda is using isn't gamebyro, but something that can be described as frankenstein's monster.

But at this point, using Gamebryo is akin to using a rotting wooden mallet to drive metal stakes into the ground. Its rotten and filled with termites, but its fine, you sprayed it with silver spraypaint and screwed bits of metal onto it in places.

While everyone is driving those stakes into the grown with a metal sledgehammer, you've been using the same mallet for over 2 decades. Please move on.

Bethesda aren't even properly trained to use their own engine, though. Gamebryo actually isn't bad, it's just that Todd's Team don't know how to really use it and keep making custom patches to get it to do what they want. I got into modding a few years back, and the "official" CK/GECK documentation is absolutely horrible. At first I thought that Bethesda just didn't really give enough of a shit to provide proper documentation for free mods, but the more I reflect on it, the more I'm convinced that even they don't know how to fucking use it.

Also, CK was prone to throwing up errors on startup - even without custom plugins loaded, as well as randomly crashing. Even their own devtools are buggy unstable messes.
