There's something to be said about cute spirtework in older games, where cartridge limitations were incredibly tight and daring to increase the budget for your resource was at the direct detriment of everyone elses work on the project. Asha from Monster World IV has so many different little animations for so many different things, from holding the Pepelogoo as it grows, filling up a bucket of water, using said bucket of water, falling into fire and riding the genie. All these little details were given to her character sprite to give her that little bit of extra character. In the days where your imagination had to fill in the blanks and all the information you could get from a character was the few animations and expressions they might have, they went above and beyond just to make her cuter and cuter.
To me, this dedication to making a character that little bit more fleshed out is something many developers take for granted today. These days they'll have a character act out everything or have a voice line at the ready for every instance, but to create a silent character who is lovable and cute is to me the ultimate labor of love. The sprite sheet posted has been magnified x4.
