Not directly explained to my knowledge, or directly disproven, but knowing Meta Knight's motivations and personality it's very hard to imagine Meta Knight as an evil entity here. He doesn't say anything overtly bad. Just,
"The time has come. The time to show our power. Dreamland's lazy lifestyle will end! I will rule!"
What he says can be misleading but I believe he is trying to get Dreamland to stop being so fucking lazy and be productive and maybe train themselves for an attack so that there is a way for people to defend themselves.
Take what I say with a grain of salt. But I believe this makes the most sense given who Meta Knight is.

The first few games have Kirby walking the line between hero and villain. Kirby's Adventure played this up the hardest, where DeDeDe's attempt to save dreamland is misinterpreted by Kirby as DeDeDe just being a villain, and Kirby's whole campaign is beating up DeDeDe's most trusted friends so he can free an ancient evil entity. DeDeDe's always been a morally good character, which is why he displays such heroics in Subspace Emissary.
Kirby's always been an anarchist, if nothing else. That alone gives him enough of a motive to fight against the authoritarian Metaknight.

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga had a planned side-quest of sorts where collecting beans to turn into coffee blends would have summoned various Nintendo characters to give Mario and Luigi their power-ups to equip (a power ring from Fox, Samus's Screw Attack, a motorcycle shock from the Excitebike guy, etc.). That was scrapped and just had Professor E. Gadd hand them all out but imagine the bullshit that the original plan could have resulted in. Careful going down this road, Anon. I once spent a full day drawing a map of crossovers, lik mapping constellations. You start getting into things like realizing both Superman and Darth Vader had cameo appearances on The Muppet Show, there's a Metroid in a Protoss science facility in SC2, and the company logo that flashes on the heads up display of the AA turret that Mal uses to shoot down an attack craft in the opening of Firefly is that of Weyland-Yutani. Darth Vader cameoed in Soul Calibur with a canon explanation for why, and every fighting game ever are also connected to each other via crossover events. A SPARTAN appeared in Dead or Alive, connecting Halo to the mess. Superman has had crossovers with Marvel, Marvel has had crossovers with everything, including Capcom, who have also had crossovers, including Tatsunoko, bringing in decades of Sentai to the mix. I managed to find multiple routes to any given major IP. Final Fantasy, Diablo, and World of Warcraft have official content ports to the actual tabletop game for Dungeons and Dragons. Warhammer 40K fit in there somewhere too. It just never ends. And this is without depending on Smash Brothers, Kingdom Hearts, or Wreck it Ralph.
It's a busy universe out there.

That one Soul Calibur spinoff (Legends, I think?) had Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia too, and ToS had a Slenderman reference in the rare Gentleman enemy. Mortal Kombat had that crossover with DC too, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 ended up tossing DMC, Phoenix Wright, and Okami into the mix too.

I'd say sometimes a coincidence is just a coincidence.
The entirety of Slenderman's concept is "spooky X man in nice suit" where X = faceless, which isn't at all untread ground by horror movies and books going all the way back to Dracula, and probably farther. If I had to say it, I'd say it was probably unconscious inspiration at the very most; the Gentleman comes off as more comical than threatening in his Tales appearances, whereas the creepypasta hits all the general markers for a good horror story with the supernatural twist being that he has no face.
Still, they do look pretty damn similar, don't they?
